Chapter 4 - The Birth Certificate

Adrian stared at the paper.

“This is fake.”

His mother said nothing.

“Tell me it's fake.”

“It isn't.”

Elena held Lily closer.

Bennett looked away.

Adrian turned to him.

“You knew?”

“Not until four years ago.”

Adrian laughed.

The sound was empty.

Daniel Mercer couldn't be his father.

Daniel had been only several years older than Adrian.

Then Adrian looked again.

He had misread the father's field.

Daniel Mercer wasn't listed as father.

He was listed as witness.

The father's name was Samuel Vale.

Adrian's father.

But beneath the document was an adoption amendment.

Adrian's hands shook.

“What am I looking at?”

Evelyn sat.

“You were born Adrian Mercer.”

Silence.

“Samuel adopted you.”

“Who was my biological father?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Daniel's older brother.”

Adrian couldn't speak.

“His name was Jonathan Mercer.”

Elena gasped.

Daniel had rarely spoken about Jonathan.

Jonathan died young.

That was all she'd known.

Evelyn continued.

“I loved Jonathan. Samuel was his closest friend.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“When Jonathan died, Samuel married me. He raised you.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because Jonathan's death was connected to the company.”

There it was again.

Vale Holdings.

The machine beneath every secret.

Jonathan had discovered the first illegal property operation decades earlier.

He threatened to expose it.

Then he died in what was called a construction accident.

Daniel grew up believing it.

Until four years ago.

He found old records.

He realized his brother's death might not have been accidental.

Daniel contacted Evelyn.

Then Samuel.

Together they began investigating.

Marcus discovered them.

“But Marcus didn't start it,” Evelyn said.

“Who did?”

“Your grandfather.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The empire he inherited had been built partly on fear.

Daniel wanted the truth exposed.

Samuel agreed.

Marcus wanted the past buried.

The warehouse photograph had been taken during their final confrontation.

“What happened after?”

“Marcus promised to cooperate,” Evelyn said. “Then Daniel was fired.”

“And attacked.”

“Yes.”

“Did Marcus order it?”

“I don't know.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

She was crying silently.

He approached.

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

“Daniel was my uncle.”

“Yes.”

The truth changed the room.

Elena wasn't simply his housekeeper.

Lily wasn't simply her baby.

Daniel had been Adrian's biological uncle.

Lily was family.

Adrian looked at the infant.

She reached toward him.

His chest tightened.

The next day, Adrian called an emergency board meeting.

Marcus arrived smiling.

He stopped smiling when he saw Evelyn.

Bennett presented documents.

Adrian presented Daniel's video.

Then investigators entered.

Marcus stood.

“You think this ends with me?”

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus was questioned for hours.

The financial evidence was overwhelming.

But evidence linking him to Daniel's crash remained incomplete.

Marcus was released pending investigation.

Before leaving, he approached Adrian.

“Ask Bennett where he was the night Daniel crashed.”

Adrian looked toward the attorney.

Bennett went pale.

Marcus smiled.

Then he walked out.

That evening, Adrian confronted Bennett.

“Where were you?”

Bennett didn't answer.

“Thomas.”

“I met Daniel.”

Elena stood.

“When?”

“The night of the crash.”

Her face collapsed.

“You saw my husband?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

Bennett explained.

Daniel wanted him to take the evidence immediately.

Bennett refused.

He was frightened.

He told Daniel to wait.

Daniel left alone.

Eleven minutes later, someone began following him.

“If I'd taken the evidence,” Bennett whispered, “he might have gone home.”

Elena cried.

But she didn't blame him.

Not completely.

Fear had shaped everyone in the story.

Adrian decided it would stop shaping him.

He publicly suspended Marcus.

He froze disputed company assets.

He announced an independent investigation.

And he established a compensation fund for families harmed by the illegal property scheme.

His advisers called it financial suicide.

Adrian called it repayment.

Three days later, Elena entered his study.

“I found something.”

She held Daniel's old phone.

“I thought it was broken.”

It wasn't.

A technician recovered one deleted audio file.

The final call Daniel made.

They listened.

Daniel was breathing hard.

Then another voice appeared.

“You should've left this alone.”

Marcus.

Elena grabbed Adrian's arm.

Then came another voice.

A second man.

Adrian recognized it.

Bennett recognized it too.

May you like

Everyone stared toward the doorway.

Because the man whose voice they had just heard was standing there.
