Chapter 9 - The Last Move of the Enemy

Vincent Moretti had spent his entire life knowing one truth.
The person closest to you was always the person who could hurt you the most.
Enemies outside the walls could be stopped.
They could be watched.
They could be defeated.
But an enemy sitting at your table knew where the doors were.
They knew where you slept.
They knew which words would make you lower your guard.
For weeks, Vincent had been fighting an invisible war.
A war fought through medicine bottles, fake documents, and quiet conversations behind closed doors.
But now the enemy had a face.
Alessandro Rizzo.
The man everyone believed was gone.
The man who had returned from the shadows to destroy everything Vincent built.
Vincent stood inside the hidden office, staring at the photograph on the desk.
Alessandro.
Isabella.
Marco.
Three people connected by years of planning.
Three people who believed they had already won.
Jonathan stood beside him.
"What do we do now?"
Vincent didn't answer immediately.
He looked at the evidence around the room.
The files.
The recordings.
The medical reports.
Everything they had collected to destroy him.
Everything they had accidentally left behind.
"We let them think they still have control."
Jonathan looked surprised.
"You want to pretend you don't know?"
Vincent nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Vincent picked up the recording device.
"Because this room proves what they planned."
A pause.
"But it doesn't prove what they are doing now."
Jonathan understood.
They needed more.
Not suspicion.
Not theories.
Proof.
The kind of proof that could destroy them completely.
Vincent looked toward Dr. Vale.
"You said Alessandro threatened your family."
The doctor nodded.
"Yes."
"Where are they?"
Dr. Vale hesitated.
"I don't know."
Vincent watched him carefully.
"Try again."
The doctor looked down.
"They were moved."
"By who?"
"Alessandro's people."
Vincent's expression hardened.
So Alessandro had planned every detail.
The doctor was not only controlled.
He was trapped.
Just like Vincent had been.
"Do you know where Isabella is?"
Dr. Vale looked uncomfortable.
"She will come back."
Vincent glanced at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because she always does."
That answer bothered him.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor looked toward the hidden office.
"Isabella never leaves until she finishes something."
Vincent understood.
She wasn't running.
She was regrouping.
People like Isabella didn't disappear when exposed.
They changed strategies.
They looked for another way.
And Vincent knew exactly what she would target.
The only thing she still had.
His trust.
Two hours later, Isabella returned.
Alone.
No guards.
No excuses.
She walked through the mansion wearing the same cream-colored dress she had worn the night everything changed.
The same dress.
The same pearls.
The same appearance.
But Vincent noticed the difference.
Before, she looked like someone who owned the room.
Now, she looked like someone entering a room where she no longer belonged.
She found him in the library.
Sitting in his wheelchair.
A glass of untouched water beside him.
Not medicine.
Never medicine again.
"Vincent."
Her voice was quiet.
He looked up.
"Isabella."
The way he said her name made her stop.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Distance.
That hurt her more.
"You know everything now."
Vincent stared at her.
"Do I?"
She looked away.
"I suppose you know enough."
"Enough to know you lied."
Silence.
"Enough to know you helped them."
Another silence.
"Enough to know you planned to take my life apart while standing beside me."
Isabella swallowed.
"I never wanted you dead."
Vincent almost smiled.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?"
"No."
She stepped closer.
"I wanted you alive."
"Alive."
"Yes."
She looked at him.
"I wanted you to live."
Vincent stared.
"Without my company."
Without my decisions.
Without my identity.
Without my name.
He didn't say the words.
He didn't need to.
Isabella understood.
"I thought you would hate me."
"I do."
Her eyes lowered.
"But not for the reason you think."
She looked back at him.
Vincent continued.
"I hate that you knew exactly who I was."
A pause.
"And you still chose to betray me."
For the first time, Isabella looked genuinely hurt.
Not because she was caught.
Because she heard the truth.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Vincent's voice became colder.
"I understand perfectly."
She walked closer.
"Alessandro destroyed my family."
Vincent said nothing.
"He promised me revenge."
There it was.
The first crack.
The real reason.
Not money.
Not power.
Revenge.
"My father lost everything because of yours."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"My father?"
"Your father ruined people."
A bitter smile appeared.
"He built his empire and never looked back."
Vincent stayed silent.
Because he knew something about his father.
Something most people didn't.
His father had not been a good man.
He had been powerful.
There was a difference.
"What did Alessandro promise you?"
Isabella looked away.
"Justice."
Vincent laughed quietly.
"People always call it justice when they want permission to hurt someone."
The words hit her.
Because they were true.
Before she could answer, the library door opened.
Marco entered.
Vincent looked at him.
The final piece.
The brother who wanted everything.
Marco looked between them.
"You shouldn't have come back."
Isabella turned.
"Neither should you."
A strange silence passed between them.
Vincent noticed.
They were not united anymore.
The plan was collapsing.
And collapsing plans made people reveal themselves.
Marco looked at Vincent.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Vincent remained calm.
"No."
Marco stepped closer.
"You think exposing us fixes everything?"
"No."
Vincent looked at him.
"I think exposing you shows me who else is involved."
Marco's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Vincent saw it.
Someone else.
There was someone else.
"You were never the leader."
Marco said nothing.
"Was he?"
Silence.
"Alessandro."
Marco's face hardened.
Vincent smiled slightly.
Confirmation.
Marco looked angry.
"You always thought you were smarter than everyone."
"No."
Vincent looked at him.
"I just paid attention."
Marco laughed.
"You were so focused on the business that you never saw what people thought of you."
Vincent stared.
"You were not loved."
The sentence was meant to hurt.
But Vincent didn't react.
Because he had heard worse.
From better enemies.
"You wanted my father's empire."
Marco stepped closer.
"I wanted what should have been mine."
"There it is."
"What?"
"The truth."
Vincent looked at him.
"Not once did you say you wanted to protect the family."
Marco froze.
"You wanted ownership."
The room became silent.
Then Vincent's phone vibrated.
Jonathan's message appeared.
They found the final evidence.
A bank account.
Payments.
Records.
Everything connected.
Vincent looked at the screen.
Alessandro had been financing the entire operation.
But one message stood out.
A transfer made yesterday.
After they discovered Vincent was awake.
Vincent read it twice.
Then he looked at Isabella.
"Did you know?"
She looked confused.
"Know what?"
Vincent turned the phone around.
The message showed a payment.
Not to Isabella.
Not to Marco.
To someone else.
A new name.
Someone who had been hiding.
Someone who had been watching.
Isabella's face changed.
Because she recognized it.
Vincent noticed.
"Who is that?"
She didn't answer.
"Isabella."
Her voice became a whisper.
"He wasn't supposed to be involved."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
She looked terrified.
"Alessandro's son."
The room went silent.
Because Vincent understood.
The war was bigger than he thought.
Alessandro had not come alone.
And the person controlling everything from the shadows had finally made a mistake.
He had revealed himself.
Vincent looked toward the window.
Then at the people who tried to erase him.
"You all made the same mistake."
Nobody spoke.
"You thought destroying me meant removing my power."
He turned back.
"But you forgot something."
His eyes hardened.
"Power was never the reason I survived."
A pause.
"Knowing my enemies was."
And somewhere inside the mansion, someone who had been watching everything realized the truth.
May you like
Vincent Moretti was no longer defending himself.
He was hunting.
