Chapter 7 - The Secret Inside the Medical Records

Vincent Moretti had spent years teaching people one important lesson.
Never reveal all your cards.
Not in business.
Not in negotiations.
And especially not in a war.
The people trying to destroy him believed they had already won because they saw the weakness.
The shaking hands.
The tired eyes.
The slow steps.
They looked at Vincent Moretti and saw a man waiting for the end.
They forgot something.
A predator did not become harmless because it was injured.
Sometimes, an injured predator became more patient.
More careful.
More dangerous.
For the first time in weeks, Vincent allowed everyone around him to believe he was still recovering.
He stopped asking questions in front of Isabella.
He stopped showing suspicion when Marco entered the room.
He accepted the medicine tray without touching it.
He smiled when people expected anger.
And that scared Jonathan more than anything.
"You are pretending."
The lawyer stood near the window, watching the security team move through the mansion.
Vincent looked at the city outside.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because people reveal more when they think they are safe."
Jonathan nodded slowly.
That was exactly how Vincent operated.
He never rushed.
He waited for people to become comfortable.
Then they made mistakes.
"The medical records arrived," Jonathan said.
That caught Vincent's attention.
"Finally."
The lawyer placed a thick folder on the table.
"The originals were stored at the private clinic where Dr. Vale treated you."
Vincent opened the folder.
The first pages looked normal.
Blood tests.
Treatment notes.
Medication history.
But as he continued reading, something became obvious.
The dates didn't match.
"Explain."
Jonathan pointed at the records.
"Your original condition was not as severe as the reports inside the mansion claimed."
Vincent looked closer.
"How different?"
"Your neurological symptoms were temporary."
"Temporary."
"Yes. Stress, exhaustion, lack of sleep. You needed rest."
Vincent's eyes moved across the page.
"But not this."
"No."
Jonathan placed another document beside it.
"This report was altered."
Vincent studied the handwriting.
Different ink.
Different signatures.
Different conclusions.
Someone had taken a manageable condition and turned it into something much worse.
Someone had built a false reality around him.
"They wanted everyone to believe I was incapable."
Jonathan nodded.
"And once enough people believed it, they could legally remove you."
Vincent closed the folder.
"Who changed the records?"
Jonathan hesitated.
That hesitation told Vincent the answer was complicated.
"What?"
"There is a name."
"Whose?"
The lawyer looked at the paper.
"Dr. Adrien Vale."
The room became quiet.
Vincent had expected it.
But expectation was different from confirmation.
The doctor who treated him.
The man who told him to trust the medicine.
The man who watched his condition deteriorate.
Had been one of the people causing it.
Vincent leaned back.
"How long?"
"Six months."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Six months?"
Jonathan nodded.
"That is when the first altered report appeared."
Six months.
Before the medicine.
Before the documents.
Before Isabella's final move.
The plan had started much earlier.
Vincent thought back.
Six months ago.
His father’s old company accounts had been audited.
A business rival had suddenly become interested in purchasing his properties.
Marco had started asking more questions about succession.
And Isabella had become more involved in his daily life.
Everything had been moving.
Quietly.
Patiently.
"Find out how Isabella met Dr. Vale."
Jonathan nodded.
"I already started."
Before Vincent could answer, there was a knock at the door.
The security chief entered.
"Mr. Moretti."
"What happened?"
"We found something in Isabella's office."
Vincent looked up.
"What?"
The security chief placed a small envelope on the table.
"We searched after you authorized it."
Vincent opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Old.
Slightly faded.
A younger Isabella stood beside Dr. Vale.
And beside them was another person.
Marco.
Vincent stared at the picture.
Three people.
Together.
Before any of this started.
Jonathan exhaled.
"They knew each other."
Vincent didn't answer.
Because he was looking at something else.
The date.
The photograph was taken seven years ago.
Seven years.
Long before Isabella entered his life.
Long before Dr. Vale became his doctor.
Long before Marco started talking about protecting the family.
Vincent placed the picture down.
"This wasn't planned recently."
"No."
Jonathan looked serious.
"This was years in the making."
Vincent stood silent.
The room felt colder.
Not because of the weather.
Because of the realization.
He had not been attacked by a sudden betrayal.
He had been surrounded slowly.
Carefully.
People had entered his life one by one.
A doctor.
A fiancée.
A brother.
Each person gaining trust.
Each person waiting.
A soft sound came from the hallway.
Vincent looked toward the door.
"Lily?"
The little girl appeared.
She was holding Molly.
But this time, she looked nervous.
"Mr. Vincent?"
"Come in."
She stepped inside.
Clara followed behind her.
"I'm sorry, sir. She wanted to tell you something."
Vincent looked at Lily.
"What is it?"
The girl looked at the photograph on the table.
Her eyes widened.
She pointed.
"That man."
Everyone turned.
"What man?"
She pointed at Dr. Vale.
"I saw him."
Vincent immediately focused.
"Where?"
"The little room."
"The office?"
Lily nodded.
"When?"
She thought.
"Before the medicine."
Vincent's expression changed.
"What was he doing?"
The child squeezed Molly.
"He gave something to Mrs. Crane."
Jonathan stepped closer.
"What something?"
Lily looked down.
"A small paper."
"What was on it?"
"I don't know."
Then she added:
"But he was scared."
Vincent stared at her.
Dr. Vale was scared.
That was important.
Because fear meant something had gone wrong.
People who controlled plans did not look afraid.
People who realized they could be exposed did.
"Did they see you?"
Lily shook her head.
"No."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
The child looked confused.
"Nobody asked."
That sentence stayed with Vincent.
Nobody asked.
That was the entire problem.
Everyone had been looking for complicated answers.
Financial crimes.
Legal strategies.
Medical explanations.
Nobody had asked the smallest witness what she saw.
Vincent looked at Jonathan.
"Find that paper."
Jonathan nodded.
"We will."
"No."
Vincent looked at him.
"We will find it quietly."
Because if Isabella and the others knew they were close, they would destroy the evidence.
The security chief left immediately.
Vincent looked back at the photograph.
Seven years.
Three people.
One plan.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone became still.
Vincent answered.
"Who is this?"
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a familiar voice.
Dr. Vale.
Vincent's expression changed.
"Adrien."
The doctor sounded terrified.
"Vincent, listen to me."
"You have five seconds."
"She knows."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
"Isabella."
The room went silent.
"She knows you found the records."
Vincent looked toward the security cameras.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
A pause.
Then Dr. Vale whispered:
"Because the person following me is already inside your house."
The call ended.
Vincent slowly lowered the phone.
Jonathan looked at him.
"What did he say?"
Vincent looked toward the bedroom door.
The place where everyone entered.
The place where everyone smiled.
The place where someone had been watching him every day.
"Someone is already here."
A second later, the lights flickered.
May you like
The mansion went dark.
And somewhere in the silence, a door opened.
