Chapter 4 - The Poison Hidden in Plain Sight

Vincent Moretti had learned something from every enemy he had ever faced.

The loud ones were easy.

They threatened.

They shouted.

They made sure everyone knew they were dangerous.

The quiet ones were different.

They smiled.

They waited.

They stood beside you while they planned the moment you would fall.

And that was why Vincent could not stop looking at Isabella.

She had not raised her voice.

She had not panicked.

She had not even tried to leave.

She was still standing beside his bed, perfectly composed, as if she were waiting for the storm to pass.

That worried him more than anger would have.

A guilty person could panic.

A dangerous person could remain calm.

"Everyone out except Jonathan, Dr. Vale, Nurse Evelyn, and Clara."

The command came suddenly.

Marco looked offended.

"You're asking me to leave my own brother's room?"

Vincent looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Cold.

Final.

Marco stared at him for several seconds.

Then he walked toward the door.

But before leaving, he stopped beside Isabella.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

A glance.

A silent conversation.

Vincent saw it.

And he stored it away.

One more detail.

One more crack.

When the door closed, the room became quieter.

Jonathan Reed opened his briefcase.

"I reviewed the document while waiting."

Vincent looked at him.

"And?"

The lawyer placed several papers on the table.

"The transfer agreement is only one part."

Dr. Vale looked uncomfortable.

"What do you mean?"

Jonathan turned toward him.

"I mean whoever prepared this wasn't just trying to gain temporary control."

He placed another document down.

"They were preparing permanent control."

Vincent's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

Jonathan looked directly at him.

"It means if your condition had worsened, this agreement would have allowed Marco to control nearly every major decision connected to your companies."

Silence.

Vincent looked at the ceiling for a moment.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he was calculating.

Marco didn't want to help him.

Marco wanted his position.

His name.

His empire.

Everything Vincent's father built.

Everything Vincent protected.

"How long?"

Jonathan looked confused.

"What?"

"How long until I would have lost everything?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"Based on the documents..."

He took a breath.

"Within thirty days."

Thirty days.

A month.

That was all.

Thirty days until Vincent Moretti became a man sitting in his own house while someone else controlled his life.

His eyes moved toward the medicine bottle.

Then toward Isabella.

"Thirty days is also around the time my condition started getting worse."

Nobody answered.

Because everyone understood.

Dr. Vale looked down.

Vincent noticed.

"Adrien."

The doctor slowly looked up.

"Yes?"

"Tell me something."

"What?"

"Did my condition actually get worse?"

The question stayed in the air.

For a moment, Dr. Vale looked like he wanted to lie.

Then he stopped.

Because he realized something.

Vincent was no longer asking.

He already knew.

"I monitored your symptoms."

"That wasn't my question."

The doctor swallowed.

"No."

The answer was barely audible.

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"No, what?"

"No, your condition did not progress naturally."

Clara covered her mouth.

Nurse Evelyn looked away.

Jonathan slowly closed his folder.

Vincent remained still.

A strange calm settled over him.

A calm that frightened everyone else.

"What did you give me?"

Dr. Vale didn't answer.

"Adrien."

The doctor's face changed.

"I adjusted your medication."

"Adjusted?"

"I changed the dosage."

"Why?"

The doctor looked toward Isabella.

That was enough.

Vincent didn't need more.

The truth had already arrived.

"She asked you to."

Dr. Vale stayed silent.

Vincent laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he finally understood.

Isabella had never needed to kill him quickly.

That would have been suspicious.

She had chosen something smarter.

Something slower.

Something that looked like illness.

Something that made everyone feel sorry for him while they took pieces of his life away.

"You were going to make me disappear while keeping me alive."

Nobody spoke.

Isabella finally stepped forward.

"Vincent."

He looked at her.

"Don't."

Her eyes softened.

"You're misunderstanding."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"I'm finally understanding."

The woman he planned to marry looked at him.

The woman he trusted.

The woman who sat beside him every night.

The woman who kissed his forehead and told him everything would be okay.

She was the person who knew exactly how much damage she could do.

"You knew about the documents."

She didn't answer.

"You knew about the medication."

Still silent.

"You knew Marco wanted control."

A longer silence.

Then Isabella said something that surprised him.

"Marco wasn't supposed to move this quickly."

The room froze.

Vincent stared at her.

Not because of the confession.

Because of the mistake.

She had admitted it.

Not everything.

But enough.

"You weren't surprised."

Isabella realized what she had done.

Too late.

Vincent continued.

"You weren't shocked that Marco created the documents."

Her expression changed.

"You were shocked that he acted before you were ready."

No one moved.

Isabella looked away.

For the first time, she looked less like a woman in control.

And more like someone whose plan had broken apart.

Jonathan quietly wrote something down.

Vincent noticed.

Evidence.

Good.

He needed evidence.

Not anger.

Anger was what people expected from him.

They expected him to explode.

They expected revenge.

But Vincent Moretti had survived because he knew the difference between emotion and strategy.

"You made one mistake."

Isabella looked at him.

"What?"

"You thought being sick made me powerless."

Her expression hardened.

"You are sick."

Vincent nodded.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised her.

"I am."

He looked at his trembling hand.

"I can't walk the way I used to."

A pause.

"I can't work twenty hours a day."

Another pause.

"I can't fight the way I fought before."

His eyes lifted.

"But I can still think."

The room became silent.

"And that is the one thing you couldn't take from me."

A small sound came from the corner.

Lily.

She had been quiet the entire time.

She walked closer to the bed.

Vincent looked at her.

"You did good."

The little girl looked down.

"I just remembered."

Vincent smiled slightly.

"Sometimes remembering is the bravest thing someone can do."

Lily looked at the medicine bottle.

"Are you angry?"

Vincent followed her eyes.

"Yes."

She looked worried.

"But not at you."

Lily hugged Molly tighter.

Vincent understood something in that moment.

The people around him had spent weeks treating him like a dying man.

But the smallest person in the room had treated him like someone worth saving.

That mattered.

Jonathan stood.

"I need to secure your accounts immediately."

Vincent nodded.

"Do it."

"I also recommend contacting security."

"Already planned."

Jonathan paused.

"Vincent."

"Yes?"

"You understand this means the person behind this may try again."

Vincent looked toward the locked bedroom door.

Then at Isabella.

"I know."

The lawyer hesitated.

"Are you afraid?"

Vincent looked almost confused by the question.

Then he smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

"No."

He picked up the medicine bottle.

Carefully.

Slowly.

He turned it in his hand.

A wrong label.

A fake signature.

A hidden agreement.

Everything they did had one purpose.

To make him believe he was losing control.

But they had forgotten something.

A wounded animal was dangerous.

A wounded king was worse.

"Let them try."

Outside the room, footsteps moved away.

Someone was already making a call.

Someone was already warning someone else.

Vincent listened.

Then he looked at Jonathan.

"Find out who ordered the medication change."

Jonathan nodded.

"And after that?"

Vincent looked at the door.

His eyes were no longer those of a sick man.

They belonged to Vincent Moretti.

The man everyone thought was finished.

"After that..."

May you like

He placed the bottle down.

"...we find out who else was waiting for me to die."
