Chapter 8 - The Voice Behind the Locked Door

The darkness lasted only twelve seconds.

But Vincent Moretti had learned that twelve seconds could reveal more than twelve years of conversation.

The moment the lights went out, everyone reacted differently.

The security guards reached for their weapons.

Jonathan stepped backward and protected the folder containing the evidence.

Clara immediately grabbed Lily and pulled her close.

And Vincent noticed something else.

Someone moved toward the hallway.

Not away.

Toward it.

Someone inside the mansion knew exactly where they were going.

"Nobody move."

Vincent's voice cut through the darkness.

The command was quiet.

But everyone listened.

The emergency lights activated a moment later, filling the room with a dim red glow.

The mansion looked different under that light.

Less like a home.

More like a battlefield.

Vincent looked around.

The security chief entered quickly.

"Mr. Moretti, the power system is being checked."

"Was this a failure?"

The man hesitated.

"No."

Vincent already knew the answer.

"Someone turned it off."

The security chief nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Jonathan looked at the door.

"The person Dr. Vale mentioned?"

Vincent didn't answer immediately.

Because he was thinking.

Dr. Vale had called him.

He had been afraid.

He had warned him.

That meant something had changed.

The doctor was no longer protecting the plan.

He was running from it.

And if someone was willing to silence Dr. Vale, they were willing to do anything.

"Find him."

The security chief looked surprised.

"Dr. Vale?"

"Yes."

"What about the person inside?"

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

"First, we find the person who knows too much."

A search began immediately.

The mansion was locked down.

Every entrance.

Every exit.

Every hallway.

For the first time in weeks, Vincent was not the person being watched.

He was the one watching.

But something bothered him.

The timing.

The lights went out seconds after Dr. Vale called.

That was not a coincidence.

Someone knew they were talking.

Someone knew the doctor had changed sides.

Which meant someone had access.

Not just to the mansion.

To the entire operation.

Vincent turned toward Clara.

"Where is Lily's room?"

Clara looked confused.

"Her room?"

"Yes."

"Near the staff quarters."

"Take her there."

Clara hesitated.

"Sir?"

"Now."

She understood the seriousness in his voice.

She grabbed Lily's hand.

But before leaving, Lily looked back.

"Mr. Vincent?"

He looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed toward the hallway.

"The little door."

Everyone stopped.

"What little door?"

Lily looked toward the end of the corridor.

"The one Mrs. Crane uses."

Vincent frowned.

"Isabella has another room?"

Clara looked shocked.

"I don't know about that."

Lily nodded.

"She told me never to open it."

The room became silent.

Vincent slowly looked at the security chief.

"Find it."

The search changed direction.

The mansion was old.

Large homes always had forgotten places.

Rooms.

Storage areas.

Hidden passages.

Places built for servants.

Places built for secrets.

Ten minutes later, security found it.

A small wooden door behind a painting in the east hallway.

The lock had recently been replaced.

Vincent stared at it.

New lock.

Old house.

A secret room.

Everything about it felt wrong.

"Open it."

The security chief broke the lock.

Inside was not a bedroom.

Not storage.

An office.

Small.

Private.

Hidden.

And full of evidence.

Vincent entered slowly.

The first thing he saw was a desk.

The second thing he saw was his name.

Hundreds of documents covered the surface.

His medical history.

Business schedules.

Financial reports.

Photographs.

Notes.

Someone had been studying him.

Not for weeks.

For years.

Jonathan picked up a document.

"Vincent."

He looked over.

The lawyer held a file.

"This is from before Isabella met you."

Vincent took it.

Inside were reports about him.

His habits.

His decisions.

His business weaknesses.

Even personal information.

A complete profile.

A blueprint for manipulation.

Vincent looked around the room.

This was not Isabella's secret office.

It was a command center.

A place where someone had planned his destruction.

Then he saw something on the wall.

A photograph.

A group photograph.

Isabella.

Dr. Vale.

Marco.

And another man.

A man Vincent recognized.

His expression changed.

"Impossible."

Jonathan looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Vincent didn't answer immediately.

Because the man in the photograph was someone who should not have been involved.

Someone who had been dead for years.

His father's former business partner.

Alessandro Rizzo.

A man who had disappeared after a major family conflict.

A man everyone believed was gone.

But there he was.

Standing beside the people who planned Vincent's downfall.

Older.

Alive.

Watching.

"Who is he?" Jonathan asked again.

Vincent placed the photograph down.

"My father's oldest enemy."

A cold silence followed.

This was bigger than Marco.

Bigger than Isabella.

Bigger than the medicine.

They were not trying to steal an empire.

They were trying to take back one.

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The security team moved.

Then a voice spoke.

"Don't shoot."

Vincent froze.

Dr. Vale stepped into the doorway.

His clothes were disordered.

His face was pale.

But he was alive.

The security guards surrounded him.

Vincent looked at him.

"You have five seconds to explain why you are standing here."

Dr. Vale raised his hands.

"I tried to warn you."

"You helped them."

The doctor looked down.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised Vincent.

"Why?"

Dr. Vale swallowed.

"Because they threatened my family."

Nobody spoke.

Vincent watched him carefully.

"Who?"

"Alessandro."

The name confirmed everything.

"He came to me years ago."

Dr. Vale continued.

"He knew about your health problems. He knew your habits. He knew exactly how to make it look natural."

Vincent's eyes hardened.

"And Isabella?"

"She was his plan."

The room felt heavier.

"Marco?"

Dr. Vale looked away.

"He came later."

Of course.

Vincent understood.

Marco was not the architect.

He was the opportunity.

The weak point.

The person closest to Vincent who wanted power.

"Why call me now?"

Dr. Vale looked terrified.

"Because they decided I was no longer useful."

Vincent studied him.

"What happened?"

The doctor reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted.

But Vincent raised a hand.

"Let him."

Dr. Vale pulled out a small device.

A recording.

"I found this in Isabella's office."

He handed it over.

Jonathan connected it.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Isabella.

"We need more time. Vincent is becoming suspicious."

Then another voice.

Marco.

"He won't recover if the medicine continues."

Then another.

Older.

Calm.

Cold.

Alessandro.

"He doesn't need to recover."

Silence.

Vincent listened.

The recording continued.

"Once the doctors confirm mental decline, the company will transfer automatically."

Marco asked:

"And Vincent?"

A pause.

Then Alessandro answered:

"He becomes a memory."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds, Vincent simply stood there.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Thinking.

They had not planned a murder.

They had planned an erasure.

A slow disappearance.

A man removed while still breathing.

Jonathan looked at him.

"Vincent..."

He raised his hand.

No.

He didn't need comfort.

He needed action.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Vincent answered.

A woman's voice came through.

Isabella.

"Vincent."

His expression remained calm.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

"I wanted to talk."

"About what?"

Another pause.

Then her voice changed.

Not sweet.

Not gentle.

Honest.

"You found the room."

Vincent looked around.

"Yes."

"And now you know."

"Yes."

The silence between them was long.

Then Isabella whispered:

"I didn't want it to happen this way."

Vincent almost laughed.

"You wanted me to lose everything."

"No."

"Then what did you want?"

Her answer was quiet.

"I wanted you to disappear without pain."

The words were worse than anger.

Because she believed them.

Vincent closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

The man who answered next was not a sick man.

Not a betrayed fiancé.

Not a victim.

He was Vincent Moretti.

"Come back to the mansion, Isabella."

A pause.

"Why?"

Vincent looked at the evidence surrounding him.

The documents.

The photographs.

The recordings.

The proof.

"Because this time..."

May you like

His voice became colder.

"...I want you to see what happens when I stop believing you."
