Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried Six Months Ago

The photograph slipped from my fingers.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because the man standing beside Adrian in that old picture wasn't just someone from his past.
He was connected to mine.
The words written on the back burned into my mind.
I raised them both.
Both.
I looked at Adrian.
"What does that mean?"
For the first time since I met him, Adrian Russo looked like he didn't have an answer.
Not because he didn't know.
Because he knew exactly how much the truth would hurt me.
Daniel Caldwell watched him carefully.
"Tell her."
Adrian didn't move.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"You owe her that much."
I looked between them.
"Someone please explain what is happening."
Adrian finally sat down.
The powerful man everyone feared suddenly looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying this secret for years.
"Claire..."
I waited.
"My father was not the man who raised me."
I frowned.
"What?"
He looked at the photograph.
"The man in this picture was."
My heartbeat slowed.
Because somehow, I already knew.
"But he wasn't your biological father."
Adrian nodded.
"No."
"Then who was he?"
Adrian looked at me.
"His name was Gabriel Russo."
The name meant nothing.
But the pain in Adrian's expression did.
"He took me in when I was young."
"Why?"
Adrian was quiet.
"Because my real family was killed."
The restaurant became silent.
I didn't know what to say.
For the first time, I saw something beneath Adrian's confidence.
A wound.
Something old.
Something he had never allowed anyone to see.
Daniel leaned against the table.
"Gabriel Russo wasn't just a businessman."
Adrian looked at him sharply.
"Enough."
Daniel ignored him.
"He built an organization that controlled half of Boston's underground world."
I looked at Adrian.
"So you're..."
He didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
But it changed everything.
The mysterious man from my blind date.
The man everyone feared.
The man who somehow knew Ethan.
He wasn't just powerful.
He was part of a world I never knew existed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Because I knew you would see me differently."
I almost laughed.
"Adrian, I just found out my entire identity was hidden from me."
My voice shook.
"Do you really think your job title is the biggest problem right now?"
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Adrian nodded.
"You’re right."
That honesty surprised me.
He didn't defend himself.
He didn't make excuses.
And somehow, that made me trust him more.
But I still needed answers.
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why was I there?"
Adrian's expression changed.
"What?"
I pointed at the picture.
"Why was this man connected to me?"
Daniel answered.
"Because Gabriel knew your mother."
I looked at him.
"My mother?"
He nodded.
"Your biological mother worked with him."
I felt dizzy.
"Doing what?"
Daniel hesitated.
Adrian answered.
"She was an accountant."
I waited.
"But not an ordinary one."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian leaned forward.
"She discovered something."
"What?"
"Money transfers."
I frowned.
"From who?"
Daniel looked at me.
"The Caldwell family."
My eyes widened.
"Ethan's family?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother discovered that Ethan's family wasn't just hiding illegal businesses."
He paused.
"They were hiding people."
A chill moved through me.
"What people?"
Adrian looked away.
"The ones who disappeared after learning too much."
I felt sick.
"And my mother?"
Nobody answered.
That silence returned.
I already knew.
"No."
Adrian looked at me.
"Claire..."
"No."
I stood up.
"My whole life, everyone told me my parents died in an accident."
Daniel's expression softened.
"They didn't."
The room disappeared around me.
The sounds.
The lights.
Everything.
I held onto the table.
"How?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because your mother found evidence that could destroy powerful people."
"And they killed her."
Nobody corrected me.
That was the confirmation.
I felt tears forming.
Not because I remembered her.
I didn't.
But because someone had stolen the chance for me to know her.
All these years.
A lie.
My entire life built on a lie.
Adrian stood.
"Claire."
I stepped back.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"I need to understand something."
"What?"
"Was Ethan with you because of me?"
Adrian's face changed.
"No."
"Then why?"
He looked at the floor.
"Because Ethan found your mother's files."
My breath stopped.
"He knew?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Almost a year before he left you."
I closed my eyes.
A year.
Ethan knew for a year.
And he said nothing.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"Because he was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"You all keep saying that."
My voice broke.
"Everyone protects me by lying to me."
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew it was true.
Mia started crying quietly.
"I wanted to tell you."
I looked at her.
"But you didn't."
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
Her answer came immediately.
"Of losing you."
The words hurt.
Because I believed her.
But it didn't fix anything.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Adrian's.
Not Daniel's.
Mine.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
My hand shook as I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice I hadn't heard in six months.
My entire body froze.
"Ethan?"
The restaurant went silent.
Adrian moved closer.
But I held up my hand.
I needed to hear him.
"Claire..."
His voice sounded broken.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
I couldn't breathe.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"I'm sorry."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Why did you leave me?"
Silence.
Then Ethan whispered:
"Because if I stayed, they would have killed you."
I closed my eyes.
The pain.
The anger.
The questions.
Everything came back.
"Where are you?"
Another pause.
Then his voice changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Claire, listen carefully."
I stood completely still.
"What?"
"You can't trust Adrian."
My eyes moved toward him.
Adrian saw my expression.
"What did he say?"
I ignored him.
"Ethan, why?"
His breathing became faster.
"Because Adrian isn't the person you think he is."
The call suddenly became distorted.
"Ethan?"
Static.
Then one final sentence.
A whisper.
"Your father is still alive."
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian looked at Daniel.
And Daniel's face turned completely pale.
Because they both knew something I didn't.
Something impossible.
Adrian slowly turned toward me.
"Claire."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He swallowed.
"The man in that photograph..."
A pause.
"He wasn't your father."
My heart stopped.
"Then who was he?"
Adrian looked toward the restaurant entrance.
Because the door had just opened.
May you like
And the man standing there was someone nobody expected to see.
Someone Adrian thought was dead.
