Chapter 5 - The Daughter Nobody Knew About

The man standing at the restaurant entrance knew my name.
Not my first name.
Not the name anyone could find online.
My full name.
Claire Morgan.
The way he said it wasn't like an introduction.
It was like a confirmation.
Like he had finally found something he had been searching for.
Adrian stepped in front of me.
"Everyone leaves now."
His voice was calm.
But I heard the warning underneath.
The guests immediately started moving.
No questions.
No hesitation.
They listened.
That was the first time I understood the kind of power Adrian Russo really had.
People didn't obey him because they respected him.
They obeyed him because they knew what happened when they didn't.
Victor remained standing near the table.
Mia looked terrified.
And I stood there, surrounded by strangers who seemed to know more about my life than I did.
The man at the entrance smiled.
"Still protecting her, Adrian?"
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You shouldn't have come here."
The man laughed quietly.
"I've been looking for her for six months."
My heart stopped.
Six months.
The exact amount of time since Ethan disappeared.
I looked at him.
"Who are you?"
The man looked at me.
"My name is Daniel Caldwell."
The name hit me immediately.
Caldwell.
Ethan's last name.
I felt my fingers go cold.
"You’re related to Ethan."
Daniel smiled.
"I'm his father."
The room went silent.
I had heard stories about Ethan's family.
Not many.
Because Ethan rarely talked about them.
Whenever I asked, he always gave the same answer.
"My family is complicated."
I thought he meant emotionally complicated.
I never imagined this.
Adrian looked at Daniel with complete distrust.
"You don't get to pretend you're here for her."
Daniel ignored him.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Claire, Ethan spent months trying to keep you away from my family."
I swallowed.
"Why?"
Daniel reached into his coat.
Adrian immediately moved.
"Don't."
Daniel stopped.
Slowly, he pulled out a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
Not a threat.
Just paper.
He placed it on the table.
"Ethan wanted you to have this."
I stared at the envelope.
Another message from Ethan.
Another piece of a life I thought was over.
"Why didn't he give it to me himself?"
Daniel's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked less powerful.
More human.
"Because he didn't have time."
My chest tightened.
"What happened to him?"
Nobody answered.
Again.
That silence.
The same silence everyone gave me when the truth was too dangerous.
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell me."
He looked away.
That hurt.
Because I thought he was different.
I thought at least he was honest.
Apparently, I was wrong.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"You still haven't told her, have you?"
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Don't."
Daniel smiled.
"She deserves to know."
I looked between them.
"Know what?"
Daniel turned toward me.
"The reason Ethan chose you."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single document.
He slid it across the table.
I looked down.
At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.
Then I saw my name.
Again.
Claire Morgan.
But underneath it was something else.
A birth record.
My hands froze.
"This is fake."
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell him this is fake."
Adrian said nothing.
My heartbeat became louder.
"Adrian."
He closed his eyes for a moment.
Then quietly said:
"It's real."
Everything inside me stopped.
"No."
"Claire..."
"No."
I pushed the paper away.
"My parents are my parents."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody wanted to be the person who destroyed my reality.
Daniel looked at me.
"You were adopted."
The words felt impossible.
I laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
"That's not funny."
"It's not supposed to be."
I looked at Mia.
She was crying.
That was when I knew.
She knew too.
"You knew."
Mia stepped closer.
"Claire..."
"You knew."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
The betrayal felt worse than Ethan leaving.
Because Ethan had walked away.
Mia stayed.
She stayed while carrying a secret about me.
"How long?"
She whispered:
"Since before Ethan left."
I stepped back.
"Why?"
Mia looked down.
"Because Ethan found out first."
The restaurant felt like it was spinning.
I looked at the document again.
A name appeared.
A name I had never seen.
My biological mother's name.
But below it was another line.
Father.
Unknown.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why are you showing me this?"
He was quiet.
Then he said:
"Because your father wasn't unknown."
My breath caught.
"What?"
Daniel looked toward Adrian.
Adrian looked away.
And suddenly I understood.
Everyone in that room knew something.
Everyone except me.
"Who is my father?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel reached into the folder.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He placed it in front of me.
I looked down.
It was a young woman.
Holding a baby.
The baby was me.
And standing beside her was a man.
I didn't recognize him.
But Adrian did.
His face changed immediately.
"No."
I looked at him.
"You know him."
Adrian didn't answer.
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Of course he does."
The room became silent.
Because the person in the photograph was not a stranger.
It was someone I had seen before.
Someone who had been standing near me all night.
I slowly turned toward Adrian.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect me.
The man who knew Ethan.
The man who knew my secrets.
"Who is he?"
Adrian looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
And for the first time since I met him...
He looked afraid.
"Claire..."
My voice shook.
"Tell me."
He stayed silent.
Daniel answered instead.
"Your father was the only man Adrian Russo ever feared."
I stared at Adrian.
"What?"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Because he knew there was no way to hide anymore.
He slowly reached into his pocket.
Then he pulled out a second photograph.
An older one.
The same man.
The same face.
But this time...
He was standing beside Adrian.
May you like
And written on the back were four words:
I raised them both.
