Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind His Name

The restaurant doors locked behind us.
I stared at Adrian Russo, waiting for an explanation.
But the man who had walked into the room like nothing could touch him suddenly looked like someone who knew danger was already inside.
"Why did you lock the doors?"
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Adrian looked at me.
"Because whoever called me doesn't want you leaving this restaurant."
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
I looked around.
The guests who had been watching us moments ago were now whispering.
The staff stood near the walls, unsure what to do.
Everything that had seemed like a strange but harmless blind date suddenly felt like a scene I wasn't supposed to be part of.
I pointed at the photograph still in his hand.
"Explain."
Adrian placed the photo back on the table.
"Six months ago, Ethan Caldwell didn't just leave you."
I swallowed.
"Then what did he do?"
Adrian looked at me for a long moment.
"He disappeared."
I almost laughed.
"No. He left me. He packed his things, moved out, and started a new life."
"That's what he wanted you to believe."
The confidence in his voice bothered me.
Because a part of me hated that I wanted to believe him.
I hated that after six months of trying to accept the pain, one conversation with a stranger could make every unanswered question come rushing back.
I folded my arms.
"You expect me to believe that my ex-fiancé was involved in something dangerous?"
"I expect you to believe that Ethan was not the man you thought he was."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because deep down, that was the thing I was most afraid of.
Not that he left.
Not that he found someone else.
But that maybe I never really knew him.
Adrian leaned back in his chair.
"When did Ethan start changing?"
I looked away.
"I don't know."
"Think."
His voice wasn't harsh.
It was almost patient.
That made it worse.
I closed my eyes for a second.
There were moments I had ignored.
Little things.
Things that didn't make sense.
Like the sudden late-night phone calls.
The secret meetings.
The way he started wearing expensive watches when his salary hadn't changed.
The way he became nervous whenever I asked about his work.
"He started coming home late," I whispered.
Adrian nodded.
"What else?"
"He stopped telling me where he was going."
"What else?"
I looked down.
"He changed his passwords."
Adrian's expression became serious.
"And?"
I hesitated.
Because admitting this felt like admitting I had failed.
"He stopped looking at me the same way."
For the first time, Adrian looked less like a powerful man and more like someone who understood pain.
"I know that feeling."
I looked at him.
"You do?"
He looked away briefly.
"More than you think."
Before I could ask what he meant, the phone on the table vibrated again.
Adrian glanced at the screen.
Another unknown number.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he turned the phone face down.
"Who keeps calling you?"
"Someone who wants to know if you're still alive."
My breath stopped.
"What?"
Adrian's eyes met mine.
"Claire, before tonight, did anyone contact you after Ethan left?"
I immediately thought of the messages.
The ones I had ignored.
The unknown numbers.
The silent calls.
I had assumed they were spam.
"I received a few strange calls."
"What kind?"
"Nobody spoke."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"When?"
I looked at him.
"About two weeks after Ethan left."
He became completely still.
That scared me more than if he had reacted.
"What?"
"Claire, Ethan didn't just walk away from you."
I waited.
"He made sure nobody could find him."
The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.
"Why?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
He looked toward the windows.
Outside, Boston continued moving.
Cars passed.
People walked by.
Everyone living normal lives while mine had just cracked open.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
"Because Ethan stole something."
"What?"
"Information."
I frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It will."
He took the photograph again.
"The people Ethan worked with weren't ordinary businessmen."
I looked at him.
"And you were?"
A small, humorless smile appeared.
"No."
The answer was honest.
That somehow made it more frightening.
"Who are you, Adrian?"
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he answered.
"The person Ethan came to when he realized he had made a mistake."
My heart tightened.
"You knew he was going to leave me?"
"No."
"Then what mistake?"
Adrian looked at the photograph.
"Trusting the wrong people."
The words stayed between us.
I wanted to stand up.
I wanted to leave.
But curiosity held me there.
Because six months of pain had created something dangerous inside me.
A need for answers.
I had spent so long wondering why Ethan abandoned me.
Now someone was finally giving me a reason.
Even if I didn't want to hear it.
"Tell me everything."
Adrian studied me.
"You need to understand something."
"What?"
"The moment you know the truth, you become part of it."
I looked straight at him.
"I already was."
That seemed to surprise him.
For the first time, Adrian Russo didn't have an immediate answer.
Then he slowly nodded.
"You're stronger than Ethan described."
My eyes narrowed.
"What did he say about me?"
Adrian didn't respond.
"Adrian."
He looked down.
"He said you were the only innocent thing in his life."
The words hurt.
Because they sounded like something Ethan would say.
Not to me.
About me.
I reached for the photograph.
"Where was this taken?"
Adrian let me hold it.
"Three weeks before he left you."
I studied the image.
Ethan stood beside Adrian and three other men.
But there was something else.
A woman in the background.
I looked closer.
My fingers went cold.
Because I knew her.
"No."
Adrian watched my face.
"You recognize her."
I couldn't breathe.
The woman was standing near the building entrance.
Smiling.
Holding a folder.
It was impossible.
Because I had seen her before.
Every day.
For years.
"This can't be real."
"Who is she?"
I looked at Adrian.
My voice barely came out.
"She's my best friend."
His expression changed.
"Name."
I stared at the photograph.
"Mia."
For the first time that night, Adrian looked genuinely shocked.
"No."
I looked up.
"What?"
He took the photo from my hand.
"Mia wasn't supposed to be involved."
My stomach dropped.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer, every light in the restaurant went dark.
People gasped.
A second later, emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Dim.
The entire restaurant was silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
My hands started shaking.
Stop listening to Adrian Russo. He is the reason Ethan disappeared.
I looked up.
Adrian was already staring at my phone.
"Who sent that?"
I couldn't answer.
Because another message arrived.
This time with a picture.
A picture taken moments ago.
Inside the restaurant.
Of me and Adrian sitting at the table.
But behind us was someone standing in the shadows.
Someone who had been there the entire time.
Adrian stood suddenly.
His face changed.
"Claire."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He stared past me toward the restaurant hallway.
Then he whispered a name I never expected to hear.
May you like
"Mia."
The woman from the photograph stepped out of the darkness.
