Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Mia stood in the middle of the dark restaurant.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the woman I had trusted for years.

The woman who had listened to every heartbreak.

The woman who had held my hand the night Ethan left.

The woman who had told me I deserved better.

And now she was standing there like she had been waiting for this moment.

"Claire."

Her voice was soft.

Almost normal.

That made my stomach turn.

I looked at Adrian.

He was no longer calm.

The man who had walked into the restaurant with complete control over the room was watching Mia like she was the most dangerous person he had ever seen.

"How long have you been here?" Adrian asked.

Mia smiled slightly.

"Long enough."

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Neither of them answered me.

That was when I realized something.

They weren't surprised to see each other.

They knew each other.

I slowly stood from my chair.

"Someone better explain what is happening."

Mia looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw guilt in her eyes.

Real guilt.

Then it disappeared.

"Claire, I never wanted you involved."

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because they confirmed the one thing I didn't want to believe.

She had been hiding something.

"Never wanted me involved in what?"

Mia looked away.

Adrian stepped between us.

"Don't listen to her."

My head turned.

"Why?"

His expression hardened.

"Because she has been lying to you from the beginning."

I looked back at Mia.

"Is that true?"

She didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

My chest tightened.

I remembered every conversation.

Every night I cried after Ethan left.

Every time Mia brought me food.

Every time she told me Ethan wasn't worth my tears.

Was all of that fake?

"You knew," I whispered.

Mia looked at me.

"Claire..."

"You knew why Ethan left."

Her eyes filled with sadness.

But she still didn't deny it.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of Ethan.

I had already lost him.

But Mia?

She was the one person I thought stayed.

Adrian moved closer to me.

"Claire, we need to leave."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward the restaurant windows.

"Because this was never supposed to happen here."

"What wasn't supposed to happen?"

Before he answered, the lights suddenly returned.

The guests began whispering.

The staff started moving again.

But the feeling in the room had changed.

Everyone was pretending nothing happened.

That scared me more.

Because people only pretended when they had something to hide.

Mia walked closer.

"Claire, please."

I stepped back.

"No."

The pain in her face was real.

But I couldn't trust it anymore.

"You don't get to say please."

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

She looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

"From him."

I froze.

Adrian didn't react.

Almost like he expected it.

"You think Adrian is dangerous?"

Mia nodded.

"You have no idea who he really is."

I looked at Adrian.

The question was obvious.

He didn't avoid my eyes.

"I never said I was a good man."

The honesty surprised me.

"But I am not the person you should fear."

Mia laughed quietly.

A sad laugh.

"That's exactly what he wants everyone to believe."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Mia, don't do this."

"Do what?"

"Turn her against me."

Mia looked at me.

"I don't need to."

Then she reached into her purse.

My body immediately tensed.

Adrian reacted faster.

He grabbed my arm and moved me behind him.

Mia stopped.

"I was going to give her this."

She slowly pulled out a small envelope.

No weapon.

No threat.

Just paper.

Adrian watched carefully as she placed it on the table.

"What's inside?" I asked.

Mia looked at me.

"Something Ethan left behind."

My heart stopped.

"Ethan?"

She nodded.

"He knew this day would come."

I stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't he give it to me himself?"

Mia looked down.

"Because he couldn't."

The words felt heavier than they should have.

"What happened to him?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Mia.

"Is Ethan alive?"

Silence.

A terrible, painful silence.

Adrian finally spoke.

"We don't know."

I felt like the floor disappeared.

Six months.

I had spent six months believing the man I loved abandoned me.

But now everyone was telling me something impossible.

That maybe he hadn't left.

Maybe something had happened.

I reached for the envelope.

Mia stopped me.

"Before you open it, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Ethan wasn't running from you."

I waited.

"He was running from the people who were watching you."

I looked at Adrian.

"What people?"

His expression became darker.

"The people who wanted what Ethan had."

"And what was that?"

Adrian looked at the envelope.

"The truth."

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My breath caught.

It was taken outside my apartment.

At night.

Someone had been standing across the street.

Watching.

And beside the picture was a handwritten note.

Ethan's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

My hands started shaking.

The note said:

Claire, if you're reading this, I failed to keep you away from them.

I couldn't breathe.

There was another line underneath.

Don't trust anyone who tells you I left you.

I looked up.

Slowly.

Because suddenly, the two people standing in front of me felt different.

Adrian.

Mia.

One of them knew the truth.

One of them was lying.

Maybe both.

"Claire..."

Adrian's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

"Did Ethan ever tell you about a company called Blackstone Holdings?"

The name meant nothing.

I shook my head.

Mia suddenly went pale.

Adrian noticed.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

"Mia."

Her eyes moved toward the entrance.

That was when I realized something.

She wasn't afraid of Adrian.

She wasn't afraid of me.

She was afraid of someone else.

The restaurant doors opened.

A man walked in.

Everyone immediately stepped aside.

He was older.

Expensively dressed.

Calm.

The same kind of calm Adrian had.

But colder.

Adrian's entire body became tense.

I had never seen him react like that before.

"Who is that?" I whispered.

Mia barely moved her lips.

"The man Ethan was running from."

The stranger looked across the restaurant.

His eyes found me instantly.

Then he smiled.

Like he had been waiting years.

Adrian quietly reached for his phone.

But the man spoke first.

"Claire Morgan."

My blood froze.

Because he knew my name.

Then he placed a folder on the nearest table.

And on the cover was a picture of me sleeping in my own apartment.

Taken six months ago.

The night Ethan disappeared.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Don't open that."

The stranger smiled.

"She deserves to know why Ethan really left."

He pushed the folder toward me.

I reached for it.

And the moment my fingers touched the cover, I saw the name written underneath the photograph.

It was not Ethan's.

May you like

It was mine.

The folder belonged to Claire Morgan.
