Chapter 6 - The Truth Richard Tried To Bury

A man stood outside my apartment holding a sealed envelope and whispered:
"Claire, your father wanted you to have this before Richard found it."
When I opened the envelope, I saw my father's final handwritten message.
Four words were written at the bottom:
"Trust nobody in Sterling."
I finally understood why Richard had spent nine years trying to keep me away from the truth.
I stared at the man standing outside my door.
I did not recognize him.
But he knew my name.
He knew about my father.
And he knew about Richard.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The hallway lights flickered above us.
The same hallway where, only hours earlier, I thought my biggest problem was my broken marriage.
Now I was standing in front of a stranger holding a message from a dead man.
My father.
"Who are you?" I asked.
The man looked around before answering.
"My name is Thomas."
That name meant nothing to me.
But his expression did.
It was the expression of someone who had carried a secret for too long.
"How do you know my father?"
Thomas looked down.
"I worked for him."
I tightened my grip on the door.
"My father died years ago."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
He handed me the envelope.
"Because he knew one day you would need this."
I didn't take it immediately.
"What is inside?"
Thomas looked at me.
"The truth about why he lost everything."
My heart sank.
Slowly, I accepted the envelope.
The paper was old.
The edges were worn.
My father's handwriting was visible on the front.
Claire.
Just my name.
Nothing else.
My hands started shaking.
Because for the first time in years...
It felt like my father was speaking directly to me.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then Richard has already shown you who he truly is.
Do not trust the Sterling family.
They will tell you your father failed.
They will tell you he made mistakes.
They will tell you I destroyed myself.
None of that is true.
The truth is hidden inside Vanguard.
Find the original ownership records.
They are the only proof.
And remember this:
The person who smiles while destroying your life is the person you should fear the most.
At the bottom was one final line.
Trust nobody in Sterling.
I read it again.
Then again.
My father knew.
He knew Richard.
He knew this day could happen.
But how?
I looked at Thomas.
"You knew about this?"
He nodded.
"I was there the night your father discovered everything."
My breathing slowed.
"What happened?"
Thomas looked away.
"Your father found out Richard had been moving company assets without permission."
I frowned.
"Richard?"
Thomas nodded.
"But he wasn't working alone."
My stomach tightened.
"Who was with him?"
Thomas hesitated.
Then said:
"Beatrice Sterling."
The next morning, Richard Sterling's world was falling apart.
The board meeting started at eight.
By eight fifteen, three major investors had requested explanations.
By eight thirty, the media had discovered there were questions about the Sterling family inheritance.
By nine, Richard received a message.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Claire.
Standing beside Elena.
His face changed.
Because he knew.
Claire had found her.
He immediately called Logan.
"Where is she?"
Logan didn't answer.
Richard's voice became colder.
"I asked you a question."
"You already know the answer."
Richard looked at the photograph again.
"Elena should not be alive."
Logan was silent.
That silence made Richard angry.
"You knew."
"I knew she survived."
Richard stood.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was tired of protecting your lies."
The words hit harder than Richard expected.
"You work for me."
"No."
Logan's voice was calm.
"I worked for your father."
Richard froze.
"My father?"
"Before you erased everyone who helped build Vanguard."
The room went quiet.
Richard looked at the city outside.
For the first time in years...
He felt something he hated.
Fear.
I spent the entire morning reading documents.
Every page revealed another piece of a life I thought I understood.
My father had not lost Vanguard.
He had protected it.
The original ownership records proved that half of the company belonged to a family trust created before Richard took control.
A trust designed to protect the original founders.
My family.
And the Sterling family.
Together.
But someone had changed the records.
Someone had removed names.
Someone had rewritten history.
And that person had benefited the most.
Richard.
I looked at Elena.
"Why didn't you stop him?"
Her expression changed.
"I tried."
"What happened?"
She looked down.
"Richard found out."
"And?"
"He gave me a choice."
My voice lowered.
"What choice?"
"Disappear or watch everyone I cared about lose everything."
I stared at her.
"You believed him?"
She looked at me.
"No."
A pause.
"I believed what he was capable of."
That answer stayed with me.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
Richard wasn't dangerous because he was powerful.
He was dangerous because he believed he deserved everything.
That afternoon, Emily arrived with more information.
She placed her laptop on the table.
"Claire, I found something about the trust Richard created for Chloe's baby."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"It was never legal."
I wasn't surprised.
"But there's more."
She opened another file.
"This was hidden inside the original Vanguard database."
A document appeared.
My father's name.
Elena's name.
And Richard's name.
At the bottom was a section titled:
SUCCESSION PROTECTION AGREEMENT.
Emily pointed.
"This says if Richard attempts to transfer company assets without approval, control automatically returns to the original trust."
I stared.
"So the forty percent shares..."
"Never belonged to him to give away."
I almost laughed.
Richard had celebrated.
He had humiliated me.
He had signed away something he never truly owned.
But then Emily's face changed.
"Claire."
"What?"
"There is one more name on the document."
I looked closer.
A fourth signature.
Someone who approved the agreement.
Someone who had the authority to activate the protection clause.
I read the name.
My heart stopped.
Because it belonged to someone I never expected.
My mother.
That night, Richard came to my apartment.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Different.
Almost desperate.
I opened the door but didn't invite him inside.
"What do you want?"
He looked exhausted.
"I need to talk."
"You lost the right to talk to me a long time ago."
He looked down.
For once, he had no response.
"Claire..."
I waited.
"I made mistakes."
I almost smiled.
Mistakes.
That was the word people used when they didn't want to say the truth.
"You destroyed our family."
"I know."
"You chose another woman."
"I know."
"You tried to erase your children."
His face changed.
"I never..."
"Don't lie."
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"I didn't know about the trust."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"The agreement your mother created."
My blood ran cold.
Richard looked at me.
"Your mother knew everything."
The hallway became silent.
"Richard..."
He stepped closer.
"Your mother wasn't protecting you from me."
I stared at him.
"Then who was she protecting me from?"
Richard looked terrified.
And for the first time...
I saw something I had never seen in him.
Regret.
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out an old photograph.
And handed it to me.
"This is why your mother disappeared before she died."
I looked at the photograph.
It showed my mother.
My father.
Elena.
And one more person.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been part of my life since childhood.
My hands began to shake.
May you like
Because written on the back of the photograph was one sentence:
"Your mother knew the real enemy was already inside your home..."
