Chapter 2 - The Secret Inside The Blue Folder

The airport announcement echoed above the crowd as a little boy grabbed his mother's sleeve and whispered:
"Mommy... why did Daddy let us leave so easily?"
When Claire Sterling opened the blue folder on the airplane, she found the original contract Richard signed years ago.
At the bottom of the page was one hidden clause.
Richard's signature was already there.
He had no idea what he had promised her.
I waited until Matthew and Lily were asleep before opening the blue folder.
The cabin lights were dim.
Outside the airplane window, the world looked peaceful.
But inside my heart, there was a storm I had carried for years.
I placed the folder on the small table in front of me.
For a moment, I just stared at it.
That folder was the reason Richard believed I walked away quietly.
He thought it contained only divorce papers.
Custody agreements.
Financial settlements.
Documents proving I was leaving with almost nothing.
He was wrong.
Because the most important thing inside that folder was something he had forgotten.
A promise he made nine years earlier.
A promise he signed when he still loved me.
I slowly opened the first page.
The old contract was still there.
The ink had faded slightly.
But Richard's signature remained clear.
My fingers touched the page.
I remembered that day.
Nine years ago.
Before the money.
Before the company parties.
Before Richard started believing that people existed only to serve his ambition.
Back then, Vanguard Holdings was struggling.
Richard had a brilliant mind.
But he had no support.
No investors trusted him.
No major company wanted to partner with him.
Everyone told him his dream was impossible.
Everyone except me.
I was the one who believed.
I worked two jobs.
I helped him prepare presentations.
I reviewed contracts late at night while pregnant with Matthew.
I stood beside him when nobody else did.
And when Vanguard finally became successful, Richard told me something I never forgot.
"Claire, whatever happens, this company exists because we built it together."
I believed him.
That was my mistake.
Because people change when the world starts worshiping them.
Richard changed slowly.
First, he became busy.
Then distant.
Then cold.
He stopped asking about my day.
Stopped attending family dinners.
Stopped noticing when Matthew learned something new.
Stopped seeing Lily waiting at the door every night hoping her father would come home.
And eventually...
He stopped seeing me.
I closed my eyes.
I could still hear Chloe's voice.
"Your children are only going to complicate Richard's new life."
That sentence stayed with me.
Not because it hurt.
Because it confirmed something.
They had no idea who they were dealing with.
I looked at my sleeping children.
Matthew had his father's eyes.
Lily had my smile.
They were not obstacles.
They were the only reason I survived those final years.
I opened the contract.
At the bottom of the final page was a handwritten note.
Richard's handwriting.
"If Vanguard ever becomes successful, Claire will have equal authority over all decisions involving family assets and company inheritance."
I smiled sadly.
He forgot.
The man who wanted to erase me from his future had once promised I would always be part of it.
But that was not the only thing inside the folder.
I pulled out another document.
A sealed envelope.
The name written on it made my heart stop.
"Emily Carter."
My lawyer.
I had given her instructions before the divorce.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I knew Richard.
I knew he would underestimate me.
I knew he would think silence meant weakness.
The envelope contained everything I had collected during our marriage.
Financial records.
Hidden transfers.
Evidence of decisions made without board approval.
And most importantly...
Proof that the trust Richard created for Chloe's unborn child could never legally control Vanguard Holdings.
Because Richard had used company assets to create it.
Something he had no authority to do.
I leaned back.
The irony almost made me laugh.
Richard thought he had protected his legacy.
Instead, he had created the document that could destroy him.
But I did not want to destroy him.
I wanted my children protected.
That was all.
The next morning, our plane landed in Spain.
A new life began.
For Matthew and Lily, it was an adventure.
For me...
It was a battlefield.
Three hours later, inside the Sterling family VIP hospital suite, Richard was no longer smiling.
The room that had been filled with celebration was completely silent.
Dr. Evans continued staring at the document on the screen.
Richard stepped forward.
"What does Claire have to do with this?"
Nobody answered.
Chloe's confident expression disappeared.
"Doctor, please explain."
Dr. Evans looked uncomfortable.
He removed his glasses.
"I need to verify something before I say anything."
Richard's voice became sharper.
"Verify what?"
The doctor looked at the screen again.
"This document shows information submitted before the pregnancy examination."
Richard frowned.
"So?"
Dr. Evans took a deep breath.
"So the DNA profile attached to this pregnancy was not created from your family records."
The room froze.
Rachel lowered her phone.
Logan stopped drinking.
Beatrice Sterling stood slowly.
"What are you saying?"
The doctor looked directly at Richard.
"I'm saying someone provided false information."
Chloe's face turned pale.
"That's impossible."
Richard looked at her.
For the first time, suspicion appeared between them.
"Chloe..."
She immediately grabbed his hand.
"Richard, don't look at me like that."
But nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood one thing.
Something had been hidden.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, I sat in a small apartment overlooking the ocean.
Matthew and Lily were drawing pictures at the kitchen table.
A normal morning.
A peaceful morning.
The kind of morning I had not experienced in years.
My phone rang.
It was Emily.
I answered.
"Tell me."
Her voice was serious.
"Claire, Richard just discovered the first document."
I looked out the window.
"How did he react?"
A pause.
Then Emily said:
"He didn't get angry."
That surprised me.
"Then what did he do?"
Another pause.
"He asked one question."
I waited.
"What question?"
Emily lowered her voice.
"He asked me if you knew about something that happened before your marriage."
My heart slowed.
Before our marriage?
I looked at the blue folder sitting beside me.
There were still documents inside I had never shown Richard.
Things I discovered only after he filed for divorce.
Things connected to his family.
Things connected to the reason his father disappeared from Vanguard years ago.
I stood up.
"Emily..."
"Claire, there is something else."
"What?"
"I received a message from an unknown number."
I became still.
"What did it say?"
Emily was silent for several seconds.
Then she read the message.
"Tell Claire Sterling the truth about why Richard married her."
My hand tightened around the phone.
Because underneath that message was an attachment.
A photograph.
A photograph taken nine years ago.
On the day Richard proposed to me.
But in the background of that photo...
Someone was standing there.
May you like
Someone who should not have been there.
And when I opened the image, I saw the face of the person who had been watching us all along...
