Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A woman stepped out of the darkness inside the abandoned Vanguard building and whispered:
"Claire... you finally came."
When I saw the woman holding Richard's old company records, I noticed the scar on her hand.
It was the same scar from the photograph taken nine years ago.
Then she said one sentence:
"Your entire marriage was built on a lie."
I could not move.
The woman standing in front of me looked impossible.
My mind kept rejecting what my eyes were seeing.
Elena Sterling.
The woman Richard said disappeared.
The woman whose name was erased from every conversation.
The woman whose existence had become a forgotten chapter inside the Sterling family.
She stood only a few feet away from me.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
But real.
"Who are you?" I asked.
Even though I already knew.
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Pain.
"That's the first thing Richard wanted everyone to ask."
She slowly stepped closer.
"My name is Elena Sterling."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I looked around the abandoned office.
Old desks.
Broken computers.
Dust-covered company files.
This place felt like a grave.
Not an office.
"Why are you here?"
She looked at the blue folder in my hand.
"Because you finally opened it."
I tightened my grip.
"What does that mean?"
Elena looked toward the old windows.
"Richard told you Vanguard was his dream."
She laughed quietly.
"But dreams don't begin with betrayal."
I stayed silent.
I had learned something during my marriage.
People who hide secrets always reveal themselves when they believe they are finally being heard.
"What happened?"
Elena looked back at me.
"Nine years ago, Richard didn't meet you by accident."
My heart stopped.
I hated that sentence.
Because a small part of me had already suspected it.
But hearing it made everything real.
"He chose me?"
Elena nodded.
"But not because he loved you."
The room became silent.
I thought about every moment.
Our first meeting.
Our first date.
The way Richard always seemed to know exactly what I needed.
The way he appeared at the right moments.
I had called it fate.
Maybe it was something else.
"Why?"
Elena opened an old file.
Inside were financial documents.
Company records.
And a photograph.
She placed it on the desk.
I picked it up.
It was Richard.
My Richard.
Standing beside my father.
I froze.
"My father?"
Elena nodded.
"Your father was one of the original investors behind Vanguard."
I stared at her.
"No."
"Yes."
"My father never mentioned Vanguard."
"Because Richard made sure he couldn't."
I felt my chest tighten.
My father had died before I married Richard.
I had spent years believing Richard was the man who saved me after losing my family.
The man who gave me a new future.
But now...
I wondered if he had taken advantage of the moment I was vulnerable.
"Why would he do that?"
Elena looked at the documents.
"Because your father knew the truth about Vanguard."
"What truth?"
She hesitated.
Then answered:
"Richard was never the only founder."
I looked at the company records.
Two names appeared.
Richard Sterling.
Elena Sterling.
And a third name.
My father's.
I stepped back.
"No."
Elena's eyes softened.
"Claire, Richard didn't marry you because you were convenient."
She paused.
"He married you because your family had something he needed."
Meanwhile, inside Sterling Tower, Richard was searching through old company databases.
He had not slept.
He had not gone home.
The ultrasound celebration was forgotten.
The rumors had already begun spreading among the board members.
Everyone wanted answers.
Especially after Dr. Evans confirmed the pregnancy records had been manipulated.
But Richard had bigger concerns.
The anonymous messages.
The documents.
The video.
And now...
Claire.
Logan entered his office.
"You need to stop."
Richard looked up.
"Stop what?"
"Looking for her."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"You know something."
Logan became quiet.
That silence answered everything.
Richard stood.
"How long?"
"Richard..."
"How long have you known?"
Logan looked away.
"Since before the divorce."
Richard walked closer.
"You knew Claire was connected to Vanguard's original records?"
Logan did not answer.
Richard grabbed the desk.
"Answer me."
Logan finally looked at him.
"She was never the problem."
Richard froze.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you spent nine years trying to control the one person who could expose everything."
The words stayed in the room.
Richard's confidence disappeared.
Because for the first time...
Someone was speaking to him like he was not the most powerful person there.
"You were supposed to help me."
"I did."
Logan sighed.
"I helped you hide the truth."
Back inside the abandoned building, Elena showed me another document.
This one was older.
Much older.
A handwritten agreement.
My name was written at the top.
Claire Anderson.
My maiden name.
My hands began shaking.
"This was created before you met Richard."
Elena said.
"What is it?"
She looked at me.
"A protection agreement."
"For what?"
"For you."
I looked confused.
"Why would anyone need to protect me?"
Elena didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"Because someone knew Richard would eventually betray you."
I looked at the document again.
There was a signature at the bottom.
Not Richard's.
Not my father's.
Someone else's.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been around my entire life.
My mother.
I stopped breathing.
"My mother?"
Elena nodded.
"Your mother knew everything."
Impossible.
My mother had died when I was young.
She had never spoken about Vanguard.
Never mentioned the Sterling family.
Never told me Richard's name.
"She left this for you."
Elena handed me an envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Claire.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My mother's.
I read the first line.
"Claire, if you are reading this, Richard Sterling has already shown you who he really is."
My vision blurred.
I continued.
"Do not trust the family that tells you they built everything alone."
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because suddenly...
The divorce was no longer about a cheating husband.
It was about a secret my family had carried for decades.
I reached the final sentence.
And my entire body froze.
"Your father did not lose Vanguard because of an accident."
I looked at Elena.
She was watching me.
Waiting.
I read the last words.
"He was betrayed by someone inside our own family."
I left the building two hours later.
My mind was full of questions.
My mother.
My father.
Richard.
Vanguard.
Everything I believed about my life had changed.
When I returned to the apartment, Matthew ran toward me.
"Mom!"
I smiled and hugged him.
For a moment, I wanted to forget everything.
I wanted to return to the simple life.
The life where the biggest problem was choosing a school.
But I knew that life was gone.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Ask Richard who signed your father's death agreement."
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
A picture.
An old contract.
A signature at the bottom.
Richard Sterling.
But there was something else.
A second signature.
A signature I had seen before.
The same handwriting from my mother's letter.
I zoomed in.
May you like
My heart stopped.
Because the second name belonged to the person standing behind me...
