Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Photograph

A woman stood outside my apartment door holding an old envelope and whispered:

"Claire Sterling... you were never supposed to see this."

When I opened the door, I found a damaged photograph from Richard's past.

On the back of it, four words were written:

"Ask him about Elena."

I suddenly realized my divorce had uncovered a secret that existed long before Chloe.

I stared at the photograph on my phone screen.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

It was impossible.

The person standing behind Richard and me in that picture...

The person watching our engagement nine years ago...

Was Elena Sterling.

Richard's older sister.

The woman everyone told me had left the family forever.

The woman Richard never mentioned.

I zoomed in.

The image quality was poor.

The background was blurry.

But I knew that face.

I had seen it once before.

At a charity event during my first year of marriage.

A woman had approached Richard.

She had called his name.

He had immediately pulled me away.

Later that night, when I asked who she was, he simply said:

"Nobody important."

I believed him.

I always believed him.

Because I loved him.

Emily's voice came through the phone.

"Claire?"

I forced myself to answer.

"I'm here."

"Did you see the photo?"

"Yes."

"Do you recognize her?"

I looked at the screen again.

"Richard told me she disappeared."

Emily was silent.

Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.

"Richard lied."

I sat down slowly.

"How do you know?"

"Because I found something else."

I heard papers moving on her side.

"Before Richard married you, Vanguard Holdings had a different ownership structure."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with Elena?"

"Everything."

I looked toward the blue folder.

The same folder Richard believed contained nothing important.

"Explain."

Emily took a deep breath.

"Elena Sterling was not just Richard's sister."

A pause.

"She was the person who helped build Vanguard."

I froze.

That was impossible.

Everyone knew Richard Sterling as the genius behind the company.

The billionaire who created an empire from nothing.

The man whose name appeared on every magazine cover.

But nobody ever mentioned Elena.

"Why was she erased?"

Emily lowered her voice.

"That's what I don't know yet."

I looked at my children playing quietly in the other room.

Suddenly, the divorce was no longer only about Richard choosing Chloe.

It was about something much older.

Something hidden.

Something that had been waiting.

Inside the Sterling hospital suite, Richard was losing control.

"What do you mean the DNA information is false?"

Dr. Evans looked uncomfortable.

"I mean the records provided before the examination do not match the current results."

Richard turned toward Chloe.

Her face had become pale.

"Chloe."

She immediately shook her head.

"Richard, I don't know anything about this."

Beatrice Sterling watched her carefully.

For years, Beatrice had controlled every decision inside the Sterling family.

She approved marriages.

She judged appearances.

She decided who belonged.

But now...

Even she looked uncertain.

Logan stepped closer to Richard.

"Maybe there is a mistake."

Dr. Evans shook his head.

"Machines can make mistakes."

He pointed at the screen.

"But documents don't."

Nobody spoke.

The document displayed on the screen was not only about the pregnancy.

It contained records of genetic information submitted before the appointment.

Someone had already prepared everything.

Someone had planned this.

Rachel picked up her phone.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the screen.

"The file was sent from an anonymous account."

Richard frowned.

"Find the sender."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Because the sender used Vanguard's private security system."

The room became silent.

Richard slowly looked toward Logan.

"Nobody outside the company can access that."

Logan's expression changed.

"Richard..."

But Richard was no longer listening.

Because one thought had entered his mind.

Someone inside his empire knew the truth.

That evening, I received another message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"Richard Sterling stole more than your marriage."

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A video file.

My finger hovered over it.

I hesitated.

Not because I was afraid.

Because deep down...

I already knew whatever was inside would change everything.

I pressed play.

The video was old.

The quality was terrible.

A young Richard appeared on the screen.

He looked different.

Less arrogant.

Less polished.

Beside him stood a woman.

Elena.

They were inside an office.

The same office that later became Richard's private executive room.

I turned up the volume.

Richard's younger voice filled the room.

"We can't tell anyone."

Elena looked angry.

"You promised me you would protect her."

Richard looked away.

"I am protecting the company."

Elena stepped closer.

"You are protecting yourself."

The video shook.

Then Elena said something that made my entire body freeze.

"If Claire ever finds out why you married her..."

The screen suddenly glitched.

The video ended.

I sat there staring.

Why I married her.

Not because he loved me?

Not because we built a life together?

But because of something else?

My phone rang.

Emily.

I answered immediately.

"Did you see the video?"

Her voice was tense.

"Yes."

"Who sent it?"

"I don't know."

"Emily, I need answers."

"I know."

She paused.

"Claire..."

"What?"

"There is one more thing."

I waited.

"Someone accessed your old marriage records today."

I frowned.

"Who?"

Emily hesitated.

Then said:

"The request came from a person using Elena Sterling's identification."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Because Elena Sterling is dead."

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Emily whispered:

"Claire..."

"What?"

"Elena Sterling's death certificate was never officially filed."

I stood completely still.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because if Elena was not dead...

Then someone had spent years making everyone believe she was.

And someone had just contacted me.

The next morning, I woke up to another message.

No words.

Only a location.

An abandoned Vanguard building outside the city.

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

But then I saw the attached image.

It was a photograph of Richard.

Taken yesterday.

Inside that abandoned building.

With someone standing in front of him.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should have been impossible to find.

I drove there alone.

The building looked forgotten.

Dust covered the entrance.

The lights were off.

I walked through the empty hallway.

Every step echoed.

At the end of the corridor was a door.

A single name was scratched into the metal.

"CLAIRE."

My heart stopped.

Nobody knew I was coming.

Nobody should have known.

I reached for the handle.

May you like

The door was already unlocked.

Someone was waiting for me inside.
