Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Wake Up

A hospital monitor screamed in the middle of the night. The doctors rushed into Alexander Cole’s room and found his hand gripping Sarah’s finger. But beneath his pillow was a hidden recording device with one sentence written on it: "Play this when I wake up." Alexander was no longer silent.
I ran.
I didn't think.
I didn't ask questions.
The moment I heard the monitor, my body moved before my mind could understand what was happening.
I rushed back into Alexander’s hospital room.
The scene inside looked impossible.
Doctors surrounded the bed.
The nurse checked the machines.
The monitors showed numbers that had not appeared in days.
And Alexander’s hand...
was holding mine.
Not moving randomly.
Not twitching.
Holding.
The doctor looked at me.
"Sarah, step back."
I couldn't.
My eyes were locked on Alexander.
"He's awake?"
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
He looked at the screen.
Then at Alexander.
Then back at the screen.
"We don't know yet."
Those words terrified me.
Because they meant there was still a chance.
A real one.
The doctor carefully touched Alexander’s shoulder.
"Mr. Cole, if you can hear me, try to respond."
Nothing happened.
Everyone waited.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Then Alexander's finger moved again.
The nurse gasped.
"Doctor..."
He immediately checked the monitor.
"There is a response."
My eyes filled with tears.
After all those days of hearing people say goodbye...
someone was finally saying he was still here.
But before anyone could celebrate, Richard entered the room.
"What happened?"
His voice was too fast.
Too worried.
The doctor looked at him.
"Mr. Cole is showing signs of neurological activity."
Richard stopped walking.
For a second, his face revealed something.
Fear.
Not sadness.
Not relief.
Fear.
Then he quickly hid it.
"That's good news."
But I noticed.
I noticed everything now.
Because Alexander had warned me.
Do not trust Richard.
The doctors continued testing for hours.
They explained that Alexander was still in a critical condition.
He wasn't conscious.
He couldn't speak.
But his brain activity had changed.
The impossible had happened.
The man everyone believed was gone...
was fighting.
I stayed beside him all night.
Lily slept beside me in the chair.
At around three in the morning, I felt something touch my hand.
I woke up instantly.
Alexander's fingers had moved.
I sat up.
"Alexander?"
His eyes remained closed.
But his hand moved slowly across the blanket.
Searching.
Searching for something.
I grabbed his hand.
"I'm here."
His fingers tightened.
Then he stopped.
I looked around the room.
Something was different.
His eyes were still closed.
But his hand had moved toward his pillow.
I carefully lifted it.
There was something underneath.
A small black device.
My heart stopped.
I looked at it.
It was a voice recorder.
Attached to it was a note.
Three words.
"Only Sarah listens."
I looked toward the sleeping child.
Then toward the hallway.
Nobody was there.
I pressed the button.
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then Alexander's voice filled the room.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakably his.
"Sarah..."
I covered my mouth.
Because hearing his voice after all those days felt impossible.
"If you are hearing this, then something happened to me."
I froze.
The recording continued.
"I don't know who you can trust."
My eyes moved toward the door.
"Not my business partners."
A pause.
"Not my family."
My breathing became heavier.
"Especially not Richard."
I closed my eyes.
I already knew.
But hearing Alexander say it made everything real.
The recording continued.
"Sarah, I need you to understand something."
His voice became softer.
"Lily was never just a child I wanted to help."
I looked at my daughter.
"She is the reason I started investigating everything."
My heart stopped.
Investigating what?
The recording continued.
"Years ago, I discovered that someone inside my company was stealing money."
I listened carefully.
"I thought it was only a financial crime."
A pause.
"But then I found documents connected to Lily."
I looked down.
My hands started shaking.
"What documents?"
The recording didn't answer.
Because Alexander wasn't there to explain.
He was leaving clues.
"Sarah, there is a truth about Lily that nobody told you."
My heart dropped.
No.
Not Lily.
Not my daughter.
The recording continued.
"I wanted to tell you sooner."
"But if I did, they would know I found out."
The room suddenly felt cold.
"They are watching you."
I turned toward the window.
"They know about the agreement."
I remembered the document.
The guardian agreement.
"They know Lily is protected."
The recording stopped.
For a moment, I thought it was finished.
Then another voice appeared.
Not Alexander's.
A woman's voice.
Whispering.
"Alexander..."
I froze.
The voice sounded scared.
"I told you to stop."
Then the recording ended.
I stared at the device.
Who was she?
Why was she there?
What did she know?
The next morning, I confronted the doctor.
"Has anyone visited Alexander before I arrived?"
The doctor looked confused.
"Many people."
"Anyone unusual?"
He thought.
Then he opened the visitor log.
"There was one person."
My heart raced.
"Who?"
The doctor pointed at the page.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
"Victoria Cole."
I looked at the doctor.
"Who is Victoria?"
He frowned.
"I assumed you knew."
I shook my head.
"Who is she?"
The doctor hesitated.
"She was Alexander's wife."
The world stopped.
I couldn't hear anything.
Wife?
Alexander had never told me he was married.
Nobody had.
The doctor continued.
"She visited him the night before the accident."
My hands went cold.
"Where is she now?"
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
"That's the strange part."
"What?"
"She disappeared after the accident."
I walked back to Alexander's room slowly.
My mind was full of questions.
The woman in the photograph.
The baby.
Victoria.
Richard.
The accident.
Everything was connected.
When I entered the room, Alexander was still unconscious.
But beside him was something new.
A piece of paper.
I knew immediately.
Someone had placed it there.
I picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
"Ask Sarah why she never told you who Lily's father was."
I dropped the paper.
Because the handwriting wasn't Alexander's.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone who knew my secret.
Someone who knew Lily.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photograph.
I opened it.
And my entire body went numb.
It was a picture of Lily.
Standing beside a man I had never seen before.

The message underneath said:
"Your daughter was never supposed to survive."
