Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Beneath His Hand

A billionaire’s finger moved beneath the hospital blanket. The entire room went silent. The doctor grabbed Alexander Cole’s hand and found something wrapped around his finger. It was not medical equipment. It was a message.
I couldn't breathe.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The monitor continued making its quiet rhythm, but everything else felt frozen.
The doctor leaned closer to Alexander’s hand.
"Everyone step back."
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"What are you doing?"
The doctor didn't answer.
His eyes were fixed on Alexander's fingers.
Because they were moving.
Not randomly.
Not like a muscle reaction.
It was controlled.
Slow.
Intentional.
I looked at Lily.
She was standing beside me, holding my shirt.
Her eyes were wide.
"I told you," she whispered.
I looked down at her.
"What did you say?"
She pointed at Alexander.
"He was trying to tell us."
The words sent chills through me.
Because the child who everyone thought didn't understand anything...
was the only person who believed he was still there.
The doctor carefully lifted the blanket.
Everyone watched.
Then he found it.
A small piece of folded paper wrapped tightly around Alexander's finger.
My heart started beating faster.
Richard's face changed.
Not because he was surprised.
Because he looked scared.
"That wasn't there before," the nurse said.
The doctor carefully removed the paper.
"Nobody touches anything until we understand what this is."
Richard stepped closer.
"I think this is getting ridiculous."
The doctor looked at him.
"Mr. Cole is a patient in my care. Let me do my job."
Richard stopped.
But his eyes stayed on the paper.
I noticed.
And that was the first moment I realized something.
Richard wasn't just shocked.
He was worried about what was written inside.
The doctor unfolded the paper slowly.
Everyone waited.
Then his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Concern.
"What does it say?" Daniel asked.
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
He looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Alexander.
Finally, he read the words.
"Protect Sarah and Lily."
My entire body went cold.
"What?"
The doctor looked at the paper again.
"That's all it says."
I felt my knees become weak.
Why would Alexander write my name?
Why would he write Lily's name?
Richard suddenly laughed.
A short, nervous laugh.
"That makes no sense."
I turned toward him.
"What do you mean?"
He looked away.
"Alexander was unconscious when he arrived here."
The doctor frowned.
"We don't know when this was written."
Richard shook his head.
"He couldn't have written it."
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right about one thing.
Alexander couldn't move his hands.
Not according to the doctors.
Not according to the scans.
Not according to everyone who had already accepted he was gone.
But somehow...
he had.
The doctor placed the paper into an evidence bag.
"We need to run tests."
Richard immediately objected.
"For what?"
The doctor looked at him.
"To determine if Mr. Cole has any remaining neurological activity."
Silence.
That sentence changed everything.
Because for the first time...
someone said it.
Maybe Alexander wasn't completely gone.
I watched Richard carefully.
His reaction was strange.
He didn't look hopeful.
He looked trapped.
After the doctor left, I stayed beside Alexander.
Lily climbed back into the chair.
She touched his hand.
"See?"
I smiled weakly.
"See what?"
"He wanted me to stay."
I looked at her.
Children sometimes said things adults couldn't understand.
But there was something about Lily.
She had always been unusually close to Alexander.
When he entered the room, she noticed.
When he was upset, she knew.
When he was pretending everything was fine...
she saw through it.
Maybe that was why she was the only one who refused to leave.
A few hours later, the hospital performed another scan.
The results shocked everyone.
There was activity.
Small.
Weak.
But real.
The doctor entered the room with the report.
"I need everyone to listen carefully."
Richard stood up.
"What?"
The doctor looked serious.
"Mr. Cole is not showing signs of full brain death."
My hand covered my mouth.
Daniel stared.
"But the previous scans..."
"We may have misunderstood the timing of the injury," the doctor explained.
"His brain activity is extremely limited, but there are signs that certain areas are still responding."
I looked at Alexander.
Tears filled my eyes.
He was still there.
Somewhere.
The doctor continued.
"But there is something unusual."
"What?" I asked.
He looked at Lily.
"His strongest reactions happened when she was near him."
Everyone looked at the little girl.
She didn't understand why.
She only smiled.
"I told you he heard me."
Nobody laughed this time.
Because nobody could explain it.
That evening, I stayed alone in Alexander's room after everyone left.
The city lights reflected against the hospital window.
I held his hand.
"Mr. Cole..."
My voice broke.
"I don't know if you can hear me."
I paused.
"But Lily believes you can."
The monitor continued softly.
"I don't know what happened to you."
I looked at his face.
"But I promise..."
"I won't let anyone give up on you."
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then his finger moved again.
I froze.
This time I knew I wasn't imagining it.
I leaned closer.
"Alexander?"
His finger moved toward my hand.
Like he was trying to point.
I followed the direction.
His finger wasn't pointing at me.
It was pointing toward the drawer beside his bed.
My heart started racing.
I slowly opened it.
Inside was nothing except a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Sarah Miller.
My hands shook.
I looked back at Alexander.
"Why did you hide this?"
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Alexander.
Me.
And Lily.
Taken three years earlier.
I had never seen it before.
But there was something written on the back.
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
"Sarah, if you are reading this, it means they finally succeeded."
I stopped breathing.
They?
Who were they?
I turned the photograph over again.
There was another line underneath.
"Do not trust Richard."
My fingers went numb.
Because Richard was the person standing outside Alexander's room.
The person who had been making decisions.
The person who had already told everyone Alexander was gone.
Suddenly, the door handle moved.
I quickly hid the photograph behind my back.
The door opened slowly.
Richard walked inside.
He looked directly at me.
Then at the drawer.
His expression changed.
"Sarah..."
He closed the door behind him.
"Tell me exactly what you found."
I stepped backward.
Because the way he said my name didn't sound curious.
It sounded like a warning.
May you like
And then Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out something I had never seen before...
A second photograph with Alexander's handwriting on it.
