Chapter 6 - The Person Behind The Betrayal

The lights went out.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds was enough for fear to enter the room.
I held my twins closer.
My father immediately stood up.
The man who had spent six years hiding from danger moved like someone who had survived it before.
"Emma."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Take the children and go behind me."
I didn't argue.
For the first time since everything started, I understood why my father had survived.
He wasn't just hiding.
He was preparing.
Olivia grabbed her phone and turned on the flashlight.
The apartment remained silent.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Nothing.
Then we heard it.
A soft sound.
The front door lock turning.
My father stepped forward.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
The door opened slowly.
And standing outside was Daniel.
I froze.
"Daniel?"
He looked exhausted.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His face was pale.
Not the confident businessman who had thrown me out.
Not the man who believed he controlled everything.
This was someone who had lost control.
"Emma."
His voice cracked.
"I need your help."
I stared at him.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the betrayal.
He still came to me.
My father moved between us.
"You shouldn't be here."
Daniel looked at him.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then Daniel said something that shocked me.
"They found me."
The room became silent.
"What?"
I looked at him.
"Who found you?"
Daniel stepped inside.
"Victoria."
My father's expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"You knew she was still looking."
Daniel nodded.
"I tried to stop her."
I laughed quietly.
The sound surprised even me.
"You tried to stop her?"
I looked at him.
"You worked with her for years."
"I know."
His voice became softer.
"I know what I did."
That was the first time Daniel admitted it.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just guilt.
But guilt didn't erase what happened.
"Why should I believe you?"
Daniel looked at my children.
Then back at me.
"Because Victoria is not trying to take your company anymore."
A pause.
"She's trying to erase everyone who knows the truth."
We moved to a secure location my father had prepared years earlier.
A private property outside the city.
No records.
No public connection.
A place designed for disappearing.
I hated that my father needed a place like this.
I hated that my family had lived inside a war I never knew existed.
Daniel sat across from me.
For hours, he didn't say anything.
Finally, he spoke.
"I met Victoria when I was twenty-four."
I listened.
"At that time, Reed Industries was already falling apart."
He looked down.
"My father had lost control of the company. Victoria found a way to keep the family name alive."
"And that way was my father."
Daniel nodded.
"She knew Richard Carter was the only person who could save us."
My father looked away.
Daniel continued.
"Then she discovered something."
"What?"
"Your father had a daughter."
Me.
"She realized if I got close to you, I could eventually control the company."
My stomach tightened.
"So our entire relationship..."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"It started as a plan."
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
"But then?"
He looked at me.
"Then I actually loved you."
I said nothing.
Because some words came too late.
Daniel continued.
"I tried to leave the plan."
My father interrupted.
"But you didn't."
Daniel lowered his head.
"No."
Silence.
"Because Victoria threatened you."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He nodded.
"She knew about my feelings for you."
His voice became quieter.
"She told me if I walked away, she would destroy you."
I frowned.
"How?"
Daniel looked at my father.
"She knew about the accident."
My father's expression changed.
"She knew I survived."
Daniel nodded.
"She had someone watching you."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Someone?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
"Someone inside your company."
The next morning, my father gathered every piece of evidence.
Everything led to one conclusion.
Victoria wasn't acting alone.
Someone had helped her.
Someone who knew Carter International from the inside.
Someone who had access to my father's plans.
Someone who knew my identity before Daniel even met me.
Olivia looked through the documents.
"There is one person missing from every investigation."
My father looked up.
"Who?"
She placed a file on the table.
A name.
I stared at it.
Because I knew that person.
Everyone did.
A respected executive.
Someone my father trusted.
Someone who attended my wedding.
Someone who hugged me after my father's funeral.
I whispered:
"No."
My father looked at me.
"Emma."
I shook my head.
"That can't be true."
But the evidence was there.
The signatures.
The financial transfers.
The hidden communication.
Everything pointed to one person.
My father's closest business partner.
The person who helped build Carter International.
The person who comforted me when I thought my father was gone.
Richard Carter's best friend.
Jonathan Vale.
I spent the entire day reviewing documents.
The anger inside me was different now.
Before, I was angry because Daniel hurt me.
Because Victoria humiliated me.
But now I understood.
This was bigger.
They didn't just break my marriage.
They destroyed my family.
They stole years from my father.
They made me mourn someone who was alive.
And they almost took my children's future.
That evening, my father sat beside me.
"I should have told you."
I looked at him.
"You were trying to protect me."
"Sometimes protection becomes another kind of pain."
I knew he was right.
"But you came back."
He smiled sadly.
"I promised your mother I would always protect you."
I froze.
My mother.
I rarely talked about her.
She died when I was young.
Before the company.
Before the battles.
Before everything.
"What did Mom know?"
My father looked surprised.
Then concerned.
"Why are you asking?"
"Because everyone keeps hiding things from me."
He was silent.
Too silent.
"Dad."
He looked away.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
"What happened to my mother?"
My father didn't answer.
That scared me more than any confession.
That night, I received another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A video file.
No title.
No explanation.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my father.
But not the father I knew.
This video was recorded years ago.
Before his accident.
He was sitting in his office.
Looking directly at the camera.
"If you are watching this, something happened."
I froze.
My father continued.
"Emma, if I disappeared, it means they succeeded."
My hands trembled.
"Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you."
The video paused.
Then my father's expression became serious.
"There is one person who knows the entire truth."
A shadow moved behind him.
Someone entered the room.
My father looked toward the door.
Then the video ended.
I stared at the black screen.
Olivia looked at me.
"Who was that?"
I didn't know.
But my father did.
I turned toward him.
"Dad."
He looked at the phone.
And all color disappeared from his face.
Because he recognized the shadow.
Then my father whispered a name I never expected to hear.
"The person who destroyed our family..."
He stepped closer to the screen.
"...is the person who has been protecting you this entire time."
My phone buzzed again.
A new message appeared.
A photo.
Taken moments ago.
Of my father.
Of me.
Of my twins.
May you like
And behind us...
Someone was standing in the doorway.
