Chapter 3 - The Secret Contract

"The name at the bottom of the contract was my father's."
I stared at the tablet in Olivia's hands.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Not because I didn't recognize the signature.
Because I did.
Richard Carter.
My father.
The man who had died six years earlier.
The man whose company I had inherited.
The man who had taught me everything about business, loyalty, and trust.
"That's impossible," Daniel whispered.
I looked at him.
For the first time since this nightmare began, he looked genuinely afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
Victoria stepped closer.
"What contract?"
Olivia didn't answer her.
She looked at me.
"Emma, we need to talk somewhere private."
I nodded.
But before I walked away, I looked at Daniel.
"You knew about this."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A tiny reaction.
A hesitation.
A guilty pause.
"No."
His answer came too quickly.
I studied him.
"You didn't even ask what it was."
Silence.
The people around us noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
And he realized his mistake.
"I mean... I don't know what you're talking about."
I turned away.
Because I already knew.
He was lying.
Inside my private office, Olivia locked the door.
She placed the tablet on my desk.
The contract was from seven years ago.
Before I married Daniel.
Before anyone knew my name.
I read every line carefully.
It was a business acquisition agreement.
Between Carter International Holdings and Reed Industries.
My father's company had purchased a controlling interest in Daniel's family's business.
At the time, Reed Industries was close to bankruptcy.
My father saved them.
But there was something unusual.
A special condition.
I read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
"The controlling shares will remain protected under Carter ownership until the day Emma Carter officially takes the position of CEO."
I looked at Olivia.
"What does this mean?"
She took a deep breath.
"It means Reed Industries never belonged to Daniel's family."
I looked back at the contract.
The truth was impossible.
The mansion.
The cars.
The company.
The reputation.
Everything Daniel's family had spent years showing off.
It had all survived because of my father.
Because of me.
And they had spent years looking down on me.
Olivia continued.
"Your father created this agreement because he didn't trust the Reed family."
"Why?"
She hesitated.
"Because he discovered something."
I waited.
"What?"
She opened another file.
A private investigation report.
My father's handwriting was on the first page.
I recognized it immediately.
The same handwriting from birthday cards.
The same handwriting from notes he left on my desk when I was younger.
My heart tightened.
The first sentence stopped me.
"Do not allow the Reed family to know the full extent of Emma's ownership."
I looked at Olivia.
"My father knew?"
She nodded.
"He knew they would try to use you."
I continued reading.
The report described suspicious financial activity.
Missing funds.
Hidden accounts.
Secret meetings.
And one name appeared again and again.
Victoria Reed.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had smiled at my wedding.
The woman who had held my babies after they were born.
The woman who had called me worthless.
My hands tightened around the papers.
"How long have you known about this?"
Olivia looked down.
"Only a few weeks."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was trying to confirm everything."
She paused.
"Emma, your father didn't just leave you a company."
She looked at the documents.
"He left you protection."
I looked out the window.
Six years ago, when my father passed away, I thought I lost the person who believed in me most.
But now I realized something.
He had still been protecting me.
Even after he was gone.
That night, I didn't sleep.
I sat beside my twins' crib, watching them breathe.
They were innocent.
They didn't know about betrayal.
They didn't know about money.
They didn't know about power.
They only knew my arms.
My voice.
My love.
I touched their tiny hands.
"I promise you something."
I whispered.
"Nobody will ever make you feel unwanted again."
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But then I saw the message.
One sentence.
"Your father knew the truth about Daniel."
My entire body froze.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
"He didn't die without warning you."
I stood up.
My heart raced.
My father had died in what everyone called a simple accident.
A car crash.
No suspicious details.
No questions.
Just grief.
But now...
I wasn't sure anymore.
I called the number.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then one final message appeared.
"Look inside the old office."
The next morning, I returned to the Carter family estate.
The old house where my father had lived.
The place I had avoided for years because every room reminded me of him.
Olivia followed me inside.
"You think something is there?"
I nodded.
"My father never did anything without a reason."
We walked toward his old office.
The door was locked.
It had been untouched since the day he died.
I reached into my bag and pulled out the old key.
The one I had kept for six years.
It still worked.
The door opened slowly.
Dust covered the desk.
The bookshelves.
The old leather chair where my father used to sit.
Everything looked frozen in time.
I walked toward his desk.
My fingers touched the surface.
And I remembered being a little girl sitting there while he explained business strategies.
"You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, Emma."
His voice came back to me.
"You just need to be the person who sees the truth."
I opened the drawers.
Nothing.
I checked the shelves.
Nothing.
Then Olivia noticed something.
"Emma."
She pointed toward the wall behind the bookshelf.
There was a small gap.
A place that didn't belong.
Together, we moved the bookshelf.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small black box.
My father's name was written on it.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And one envelope.
My name was written on the front.
"Emma."
I opened it.
The letter was dated two days before my father's death.
My eyes moved across the first line.
"If you are reading this, it means the Reed family has already shown you who they really are."
I stopped breathing.
Olivia stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
I continued.
"Do not trust Daniel."
The room became silent.
The letter continued.
"He married you for a reason."
I felt my chest tighten.
"No..."
I whispered.
But the next sentence destroyed everything.
"He was never chosen by you. He was chosen by someone else."
I looked at Olivia.
"What does that mean?"
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I almost didn't answer.
But something told me I needed to hear his voice.
I picked up.
"Emma."
His voice was low.
Different.
"I know you found something."
I didn't respond.
He continued.
"You need to listen to me."
"Why?"
My voice was cold.
"Because I can explain."
I laughed quietly.
"Explain what? The money you stole? The lies? Throwing me and our children outside?"
Silence.
Then Daniel said something I never expected.
"Your father wasn't protecting you from my family."
I froze.
"He was protecting you from me."
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Olivia looked at me.
"What did he say?"
I couldn't answer.
Because for the first time...
I wondered if Daniel had been the enemy from the beginning.
Then another message appeared on my phone.
From Daniel.
Only three words.
"Meet your father."
I looked at the screen.
My father's death certificate was on the desk.
The date was six years ago.
But attached to Daniel's message was a photo.
A recent photo.
Of a man standing outside an unknown building.
A man I recognized immediately.
Because he was supposed to be dead.
May you like
And underneath the picture was a single sentence:
"Your father has been alive this entire time."
