Chapter 1 - The Night They Threw Me Away

I held my newborn twins outside a locked mansion door, whispering: "Mommy is here. I won't let anything happen to you."

When billionaire investor Alexander Reed arrived at the company headquarters the next morning, he discovered a termination file with his wife's name on it.

But written across the bottom of the document were four words: "Remove her immediately. Daniel."

Alexander suddenly realized someone had declared war on the woman who owned everything.

The first sound I heard was my babies crying.

Not loudly.

Not desperately.

Just softly.

The kind of cry only a mother could recognize.

The cry of two tiny lives who had no idea the world they were born into had already turned against them.

I stood on the marble steps outside the Reed family mansion, holding my ten-day-old twins against my chest. Their small bodies were wrapped tightly in white blankets, protected from the freezing night as much as I could.

But I was still shaking.

Not because of the cold.

Because the man standing behind me was the man who had promised to protect me forever.

My husband.

Daniel Reed.

The same man who had held my hand in the hospital ten days earlier when our children were born.

The same man who had cried when he first saw their faces.

The same man who had whispered:

"They are perfect. You gave me everything I ever wanted."

I never imagined those words would become a memory so painful that I would wish I could erase them.

"Are you still standing there?"

My mother-in-law's voice cut through the night.

Victoria Reed stood at the top of the stairs wearing an expensive fur coat, looking down at me like I was something dirty that had accidentally entered her home.

She had always been clear about what she thought of me.

To her, I was never good enough.

I wasn't from a wealthy family.

I wasn't born into old money.

I wasn't the kind of woman she imagined standing beside her son.

She tolerated me because Daniel loved me.

Or at least, I thought he did.

Victoria stepped closer and looked at the babies in my arms.

For a moment, I hoped I would see some kindness in her eyes.

I was wrong.

"Take them and leave," she said coldly.

I looked back at Daniel.

"Daniel?"

My voice barely came out.

He stood beside his mother.

Silent.

That hurt more than anything.

"Please tell me this is some kind of misunderstanding."

Daniel looked away.

A husband who couldn't even look at his wife's face.

A father who couldn't look at his own children.

"Emma, stop making this difficult."

I felt my heart break.

"Making this difficult?"

I stared at him.

"I just gave birth to our children."

Victoria laughed softly.

"Our children?"

She walked down a few steps.

"You really think giving him babies makes you important?"

I tightened my arms around my twins.

I had spent the last ten months protecting them.

From every doctor appointment.

Every sleepless night.

Every fear.

I never thought I would have to protect them from their own father.

Daniel finally spoke.

"You need to accept reality."

I waited.

I waited for him to say he was sorry.

I waited for him to say this was a mistake.

I waited for him to choose us.

Instead, he said:

"My mother was right. This marriage was a mistake."

The world became quiet.

Even the sound of the wind disappeared.

I looked at the man I had loved for years.

The man I had built my life around.

And I realized I didn't know him at all.

"Daniel..."

I whispered his name.

He avoided my eyes.

"You were never what my family needed."

Victoria smiled.

"There. Now she understands."

Then she did something I would never forget.

She picked up the suitcase sitting beside the door and pushed it down the stairs.

My belongings fell into the snow.

My clothes.

My sketches.

My wedding photos.

Everything they wanted me to believe was my entire life.

"Get out and take your bastards with you."

Her words echoed through the night.

I looked at my children.

Then I looked at the mansion behind them.

The mansion I had secretly purchased three years earlier.

The mansion Daniel believed belonged to his family.

The mansion that was actually one of the many properties under my private holding company.

But I said nothing.

Not yet.

Because the woman standing in the snow wasn't powerless.

She was simply waiting.

My name was Emma Carter.

The world knew me as a quiet fashion designer who created elegant gowns for wealthy clients.

But almost nobody knew the truth.

I was the founder and CEO of Carter International Holdings.

A company valued at eight billion dollars.

The company that owned the luxury brands Daniel proudly represented.

The company that financed the very lifestyle his family used to look down on me.

I had hidden my identity because I wanted something real.

I wanted to know if Daniel loved me when he thought I had nothing.

I thought I had found my answer.

I was wrong about one thing.

I thought he had failed the test.

But I didn't realize he had planned the entire betrayal.

Not until that night.

I stepped away from the mansion doors.

The snow touched my hair.

My babies moved slightly in my arms.

"I'm sorry," I whispered to them.

"Mommy should have seen this coming."

I reached into my coat pocket.

Not for money.

Not for help.

For my phone.

Daniel watched me from the doorway.

He smiled.

He thought I was calling someone to rescue me.

He thought I was finally admitting defeat.

"Who are you calling?" he asked.

I looked at him calmly.

"The person who handles emergencies at my company."

His smile faded slightly.

"Your company?"

I didn't answer.

I simply pressed one button.

The call connected immediately.

"Ms. Carter?"

A calm voice came through the phone.

I looked at my husband.

At my mother-in-law.

At the house they had just thrown me out of.

"Activate the emergency board meeting."

A pause.

Then:

"Understood, CEO Carter."

Daniel's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Confusion.

Fear.

Victoria frowned.

"CEO?"

I ended the call.

For the first time that night, I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because I finally understood something.

They hadn't thrown away a helpless woman.

They had thrown away the person who owned their entire world.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Emma, what was that?"

I picked up one of my fallen bags from the snow.

"You'll find out."

I turned away.

But before I could take another step, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered casually.

Then his face changed.

"Wait... what?"

Victoria immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at me.

His expression was no longer arrogant.

It was confused.

Then afraid.

"Why did the company freeze my accounts?"

I stopped walking.

Because I knew.

The first piece had already moved.

But I didn't know the next morning would reveal something much worse.

Something hidden inside my husband's office.

May you like

Something that proved this betrayal had started long before that freezing night.

And when I opened the first file waiting for me the next morning, I saw a name I never expected to find...
