Chapter 5 - The Father Who Never Left

The man standing in the doorway looked older than I remembered.
His hair had turned silver.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But his eyes...
His eyes were exactly the same.
The same eyes that watched me graduate.
The same eyes that hugged me after my first business failure.
The same eyes that told me I could survive anything.
"Dad?"
The word escaped before I could stop it.
For six years, I had trained myself not to say that word anymore.
Because saying it meant admitting I missed him.
Because saying it meant remembering the pain.
But now he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
My father stepped inside slowly.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Emma."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My mind was trying to understand something my heart already knew.
He was real.
He wasn't a memory.
He wasn't a dream.
He was standing right there.
I ran toward him.
For the first time in six years, I let myself break.
My father wrapped his arms around me.
And I cried.
Not the quiet tears I had hidden from everyone.
Not the tears I swallowed when Daniel abandoned me.
These were the tears of a daughter who had spent years believing she was alone.
"I thought I lost you."
My voice shook.
"I know."
His voice cracked.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words hurt more than I expected.
Because I knew he meant them.
But they couldn't give me back six years.
They couldn't erase birthdays without him.
They couldn't erase the nights I wished I could ask him what to do.
They couldn't erase the moment I became a mother and he wasn't there.
I stepped back.
"Why?"
My father looked down.
"Emma..."
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
The room became silent.
Daniel stood near the desk.
For once, he wasn't trying to control the situation.
He was watching.
Waiting.
My father looked at him.
And his expression changed.
Cold.
Disappointed.
"You married him."
It wasn't a question.
I looked at Daniel.
"Yes."
My father closed his eyes.
"I tried to stop it."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
He looked at me.
"Before you married Daniel, I discovered what the Reed family was planning."
I felt anger rising.
"You knew?"
"I knew they were interested in your company."
He paused.
"But I didn't know how deep it went."
I looked at Daniel.
He lowered his eyes.
"You knew my father was alive."
Daniel didn't answer.
My father did.
"He knew."
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I turned toward Daniel.
The man I had loved.
The man who held my children.
The man who watched me walk into the snow.
"You knew."
His face changed.
"Emma, listen—"
"No."
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
"You knew my father was alive, and you still let me believe I had nobody."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I was trying to protect you."
I almost laughed.
"Protect me?"
I pointed at the documents on the desk.
"You monitored me."
"You planned my marriage."
"You let your mother use me."
His face tightened.
"I was trying to find a way out."
"Six years?"
I whispered.
"You needed six years?"
Daniel looked away.
And that was enough.
My father sat down in his old chair.
The chair he had left behind.
The chair that still felt like him.
"I need to tell you everything."
I sat across from him.
Olivia stayed nearby.
Daniel remained standing.
My father took a deep breath.
"Six years ago, I discovered Reed Industries wasn't just losing money."
He looked at the documents.
"They were hiding money."
I listened carefully.
"Victoria had created private accounts. She was moving company funds while making the business look unstable."
My father continued.
"When I investigated, I found something worse."
"What?"
He looked at Daniel.
"Daniel knew."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"I didn't know everything."
My father looked disappointed.
"You knew enough."
Daniel became silent.
My father continued.
"Victoria wanted control of Carter International."
He looked at me.
"Because your company owned the shares that kept Reed Industries alive."
I nodded.
"I know."
"But there was a problem."
He paused.
"Me."
The room became quiet.
"So they couldn't take your company while I was alive."
I stared at him.
"What happened the night of the accident?"
My father looked down.
"They tried to scare me."
My hands tightened.
"But something went wrong."
He looked at me.
"They thought I died."
The words felt unreal.
"They thought?"
My father nodded.
"The accident was planned. The car was supposed to be destroyed. They wanted me gone."
I covered my mouth.
"But you survived."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you come home?"
His eyes filled with pain.
"Because I found out they were watching you."
I froze.
"What?"
"They knew you were my weakness."
He looked at my children sleeping nearby.
"They knew if they couldn't reach me, they would reach you."
I remembered every moment.
Every strange conversation.
Every warning.
Every time Victoria made me feel small.
She wasn't just cruel.
She was calculating.
My father continued.
"I went into hiding to gather evidence."
"Six years?"
"I thought it would take months."
He looked away.
"But Victoria was smarter than I expected."
That evening, my father showed me everything.
Documents.
Recordings.
Financial reports.
Proof of every move the Reed family had made.
But one thing bothered me.
A missing piece.
"Where is Victoria now?"
Olivia checked her phone.
"She disappeared after Daniel came here."
My father frowned.
"That isn't like her."
"What do you mean?"
He looked at me.
"Victoria never runs."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Then what is she doing?"
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
She was planning something.
Later that night, I returned to my apartment with my father.
For the first time in years, my children met their grandfather.
He held them carefully.
Like they were the most precious things in the world.
I watched him smile.
And a part of me finally healed.
But another part of me remained angry.
At Daniel.
At Victoria.
At everyone who took years from us.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
It was a photo.
My blood turned cold.
It showed my father leaving the safe house where he had been hiding.
Taken that day.
Someone had followed him.
Another message appeared.
"You found your father."
A second message arrived.
"Now find out who helped him disappear."
I stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
A name.
A name I never expected.
Because it was the name of the person standing beside me.
I slowly looked up.
My father was holding my twins.
Olivia was reading the message over my shoulder.
And Daniel was nowhere in sight.
Then the apartment lights suddenly went out.
The door handle moved.
May you like
Someone was outside.
And they whispered my name.
