Chapter 6 - The House That Hid the Truth

Claire Han stared at the photograph.
Her fingers became cold.
The image was old, but clear.
Adrian’s father.
Standing beside Evelyn.
On the night she disappeared.
For eight years, everyone believed one story.
Evelyn Park had vanished.
Adrian’s father had died.
The Park family had lost everything that mattered.
But the photograph sitting in Claire’s hand proved one thing.
Someone had lied.
A lot of people had lied.
Claire looked at Evelyn.
"Explain."
Evelyn did not answer immediately.
She looked at the photograph.
Then she looked at Adrian lying unconscious on the hospital bed.
"He was alive when I disappeared."
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
"Your father?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Enough."
Claire turned toward him.
"No."
Her voice was sharper than before.
"Not this time."
Daniel stopped.
She held up the photograph.
"Your sister was alive. Your father was alive. And Adrian spent years believing both of them were gone."
Daniel looked away.
Claire noticed.
He wasn't surprised.
He already knew.
"You knew."
Daniel remained silent.
"You knew the entire time."
His silence confirmed it.
Claire felt something break inside her.
Not because Daniel had lied.
She had already expected lies.
Because she realized how deep the secret went.
Adrian had been surrounded by people who knew the truth.
And every single one of them decided he didn't deserve to know.
"Why?" Claire asked.
Daniel finally looked at her.
"Because knowing the truth almost killed him."
Claire laughed quietly.
A humorless sound.
"He almost died tonight."
Daniel had no answer.
Evelyn stepped between them.
"Adrian found the truth before I could stop him."
Claire looked at her.
"What truth?"
Evelyn walked toward the window.
"The Park family empire was built on something much darker than anyone knew."
Claire waited.
"Eight years ago, Adrian discovered his father was involved in illegal financial deals."
Daniel immediately interrupted.
"That is not the whole story."
Evelyn looked at him.
"No. It isn't."
The room became silent.
Claire looked between them.
"Then tell me the whole story."
Evelyn took a deep breath.
"Adrian's father wasn't working alone."
Claire remembered Adrian’s video.
Someone inside the family.
Someone close.
"Who?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"Someone who helped him hide everything."
"Who?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Adrian.
"He was protecting that person."
Claire froze.
"Adrian?"
Evelyn nodded.
"That's why he never told you."
Claire looked confused.
"Why would he protect someone who betrayed him?"
Evelyn's expression softened.
"Because Adrian was not trying to destroy his family."
She paused.
"He was trying to save it."
Those words stayed in Claire's mind.
Because they sounded exactly like Adrian.
Even when he was hurt.
Even when people betrayed him.
He always searched for a way to fix things.
Not break them.
Claire looked at the memory chip.
"What is inside?"
Evelyn looked at it carefully.
"The evidence."
"Evidence against who?"
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
Then lowered her voice.
"The person who ordered my disappearance."
Before Claire could respond, Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"Who is it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire watched him.
The same fear appeared again.
The same fear everyone showed when they thought Claire wasn't looking.
Daniel answered.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Daniel said:
"You're alive."
Claire felt the room become colder.
Daniel listened.
Then his face turned pale.
He slowly lowered the phone.
"He's awake."
Claire immediately looked at Adrian.
The machines were still showing his heartbeat.
The doctors had said he was unconscious.
Daniel shook his head.
"Not Adrian."
Claire frowned.
"Then who?"
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
And Evelyn looked terrified.
"The person who sent the photo."
Nobody moved.
A second later, the hospital alarm sounded.
Not a medical emergency.
A security alert.
The hallway outside filled with footsteps.
Security guards rushed past.
Claire looked through the glass.
Someone was entering the floor.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Walking slowly.
Not running.
Not hiding.
Like he owned the place.
Claire couldn't see his face clearly.
But Evelyn could.
Her entire body froze.
"No."
Daniel whispered:
"Impossible."
Claire looked at them.
"Who is that?"
Neither answered.
The man reached Adrian's door.
The security guards around him stopped.
Not because they recognized him.
Because they were afraid.
The door opened.
The man stepped inside.
Claire felt her breath disappear.
Because she had seen that face before.
Not in person.
In the photograph.
The same photograph that had destroyed everything she believed.
Evelyn whispered:
"My father."
Claire stared.
The man looked at Adrian.
Then at Claire.
A small smile appeared on his face.
"Claire Han."
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
"I wondered when you would finally find the truth."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You should be dead."
The older man looked at him.
"That's what I wanted everyone to believe."
Claire couldn't move.
Her mind was racing.
Adrian's father was alive.
Evelyn had been hiding.
The attack.
The memory chip.
Everything connected back to this moment.
The man slowly walked toward Adrian's bed.
Claire moved between them.
"Don't."
The man stopped.
Then smiled.
"Your husband chose well."
Claire's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
He looked at the memory chip in her hand.
"It means Adrian finally found someone who could finish what he started."
Claire tightened her grip.
"What did he start?"
The man looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then back at Claire.
"A war."
Nobody spoke.
Then he reached into his coat.
Claire immediately stepped back.
But he didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a document.
An old document.
With Adrian's signature.
Claire recognized the handwriting.
Because she had seen it hundreds of times.
Her husband’s.
"What is that?"
The man placed it on the table.
"The reason Adrian married you."
Claire froze.
"No."
The man smiled slightly.
"You thought he married you because he loved you."
The words hurt.
Even though she knew he was trying to manipulate her.
"Adrian loved me."
The man looked at her.
"I didn't say he didn't."
A pause.
"I said that wasn't the only reason."
Claire looked at the document.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She opened it.
The first line made her heart stop.
Because it was dated one week before she met Adrian.
And beneath his signature was a sentence.
A sentence Adrian had never told her.
"Claire Han must never know who she really is."
Claire looked up.
The room felt like it was spinning.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian’s heart monitor suddenly changed.
A stronger sound.
A movement.
His fingers moved.
Claire turned.
Adrian's eyes slowly opened.
For the first time since the wedding.
He was awake.
And the first word he whispered was not Claire’s name.
May you like
It was a warning.
"Run..."
