Chapter 3 - The Guest Who Was Never Invited

Claire Han stared at the photograph on her phone.
The image was impossible.
Someone was standing inside Adrian’s hospital room.
Someone who should not have been there.
The person was partially hidden in the darkness near the window.
Only the outline of a black suit was visible.
But Claire recognized the watch.
She had seen it before.
At the wedding.
On the wrist of the man who had smiled at her just minutes before her husband was shot.
Richard Kang.
Adrian’s father’s oldest friend.
The man everyone called family.
Claire slowly lowered her phone.
Her heartbeat became louder than the hospital machines around her.
For the first time that night, she felt something stronger than fear.
Betrayal.
Because Richard Kang was not supposed to be in that hospital room.
He was not even supposed to know Adrian was alive.
After the shooting, police had locked down the entire floor.
Only family members and authorized medical staff were allowed inside.
Yet somehow…
Richard had walked directly to Adrian’s bedside.
And someone had taken a photo of him doing it.
Claire looked at the message again.
"Stop searching for your husband."
Not a threat.
Not a warning.
An order.
Someone believed they still had control.
Claire closed her laptop and stood up.
She walked out of Adrian’s room.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
She looked toward the security cameras above the ceiling.
Then she looked back at Adrian’s door.
A strange thought entered her mind.
Maybe the person who attacked Adrian did not want him dead.
Maybe they wanted him unconscious.
Because Adrian had hidden something.
Something important enough that someone was willing to destroy a wedding to find it.
Claire walked toward the hospital security office.
She had never been someone who chased danger.
That was Adrian’s world.
His world was filled with enemies, negotiations, and secrets.
Her world had always been simpler.
She worked as an art director.
She painted.
She designed.
She created things people could admire.
But Adrian once told her something that confused her.
"You think you're different from me because you don't fight."
He smiled.
"But Claire, you fight every day. You just use different weapons."
At the time, she thought he was being dramatic.
Now she understood.
Her weapon was patience.
Her weapon was noticing what others ignored.
And tonight, everyone had ignored one important detail.
The quiet wife standing beside the billionaire.
They thought she was broken.
They thought she was scared.
They thought she would wait for someone else to save her.
They were wrong.
The security officer looked surprised when Claire entered.
"Mrs. Park?"
"I need access to the wedding security footage."
The officer immediately shook his head.
"I'm sorry. Only the police can—"
Claire placed her wedding invitation card on the desk.
The officer looked at it.
Then at her.
"I was the target's wife."
His expression changed.
Claire leaned forward.
"And my husband nearly died because someone inside that ballroom wanted him gone."
The officer hesitated.
A few minutes later, he opened the system.
The screen showed hundreds of camera angles.
The ballroom.
The entrance.
The stage.
The guests.
Claire watched silently.
She rewound the moment before the gunshot.
At first, everything looked normal.
The guests were smiling.
Adrian was holding her hand.
The orchestra was playing.
Then Claire noticed something.
A waiter walking behind Adrian.
The waiter stopped.
Not for long.
Only two seconds.
But Claire saw it.
He placed something beneath the table.
Claire pointed.
"Zoom in."
The officer adjusted the footage.
The image became clearer.
It was not a waiter.
The person was wearing a waiter uniform.
But the face was different.
A disguise.
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
"Can you identify him?"
The officer shook his head.
"No."
Claire continued watching.
The fake waiter disappeared into the crowd.
Then another person appeared.
Richard Kang.
He was standing near Adrian’s family table.
Watching.
Not surprised.
Not shocked.
Waiting.
Claire paused the video.
"Go back."
The officer rewound.
She watched Richard again.
The moment before the gunshot.
Everyone turned toward Adrian.
Everyone screamed.
Everyone panicked.
Except Richard.
Claire stared at the frozen image.
Richard’s face showed no surprise.
No fear.
Nothing.
He looked like a man watching something happen exactly as he expected.
"Print this frame."
The officer looked nervous.
"Mrs. Park..."
Claire turned.
"Yes?"
"Are you sure you want to continue?"
She looked back at the screen.
"I need to know who tried to kill my husband."
The officer lowered his voice.
"Sometimes knowing the truth is more dangerous than not knowing it."
Claire remembered Adrian saying the same thing.
She took the printed photo.
Then she left.
When she returned to Adrian’s room, Daniel was waiting.
He was standing beside the window.
The same place where the mysterious figure had appeared in the photo.
Claire stopped.
Daniel noticed.
"What happened?"
Claire looked at him.
"You tell me."
Daniel frowned.
"I don't understand."
"You knew Richard Kang was there tonight."
Silence.
A small silence.
But enough.
Claire saw it.
"You did know."
Daniel looked away.
"Claire, listen to me."
"No."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"You listen to me."
Daniel stared at her.
Claire walked closer.
"My husband was almost killed."
Daniel said nothing.
"You knew someone was after him."
Still nothing.
"You knew about his sister."
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Claire saw it.
"Evelyn."
Daniel's face became pale.
"Who told you that name?"
Claire laughed quietly.
"That's your question?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Claire, you don't understand what Adrian was involved in."
"Then explain."
Daniel looked at Adrian lying unconscious.
His voice became softer.
"Before Evelyn disappeared, Adrian found out something about our family."
"What?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Something that could destroy everyone connected to us."
Claire waited.
But Daniel stopped.
"Something you don't want to know."
Claire looked at him.
"Why does everyone keep saying that?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because he knew.
Claire was already too close.
A nurse suddenly entered.
"Mr. Park?"
Daniel turned.
"Yes?"
The nurse held a small envelope.
"This was delivered for Adrian."
Claire immediately noticed.
The envelope was old.
Yellowed.
Like it had been stored somewhere for years.
The nurse looked confused.
"It was addressed before he arrived."
Daniel took a step forward.
Claire noticed his reaction.
He recognized it.
"What does it say?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire took the envelope from him.
The front had only one name.
Not Adrian.
Not Daniel.
Evelyn.
Claire looked at Daniel.
"Why is your missing sister's name on this?"
Daniel's face lost all color.
Because for the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence was written.
"Claire, if you are reading this, Adrian failed to protect you."
Her fingers froze.
Then the hospital lights suddenly went out.
The room became completely dark.
The machines stopped.
The emergency lights turned red.
May you like
And from somewhere near Adrian’s bed, a voice whispered her name...
"Claire."
