Chapter 1 - The Shot That Stopped Four Hundred Hearts

Claire Han dropped her champagne glass beside her husband’s fallen body and whispered: "Don’t touch him. I need to see what they missed."

When billionaire Adrian Park’s security team arrived, they discovered a broken cufflink beside him with a strange engraving underneath.

Three words were carved into the metal: "Trust No One."

Claire suddenly realized this wasn’t a random attack.

The first sound Claire Han remembered was not the gunshot.

It was the silence before it.

For exactly one second, four hundred people inside the Grand Aurelia Ballroom stopped moving.

The orchestra froze halfway through a song.

The waiters holding silver trays stood still.

The guests wearing designer gowns and black tuxedos looked toward the center of the ballroom, trying to understand what had just happened.

And Claire…

Claire was still standing beside her husband.

Her hand was wrapped around a champagne glass.

Her smile from the wedding photographs was still on her face.

Until Adrian Park collapsed.

The man everyone in South Korea knew as the youngest billionaire in the technology industry fell onto the marble floor in front of the woman he had married less than ten minutes earlier.

The room exploded.

People screamed.

Chairs moved violently across the polished floor.

Someone shouted for security.

Someone else ran toward the exit.

But Claire did not move.

She looked down at Adrian.

Her husband.

The man who had promised her three hours earlier that they would finally have a normal life.

A man who had built a billion-dollar empire before turning thirty-five.

A man who had enemies powerful enough to destroy entire companies.

A man who had always told her one thing:

"Never trust the room you're standing in."

At the time, Claire thought it was just another strange habit from a man who had spent his entire life protecting himself.

Now, lying on the floor in front of her, those words felt different.

More like a warning.

"Claire!"

A voice screamed her name.

She looked up.

Adrian’s younger brother, Daniel Park, was pushing through the crowd.

His face was pale.

His eyes were wide.

But Claire noticed something strange.

He was not looking at Adrian.

He was looking at her.

More specifically…

He was looking at her hands.

Claire slowly looked down.

Her fingers were still holding the champagne glass.

And beside Adrian’s hand on the marble floor was something small.

Something nobody else had noticed.

A black metal object.

At first, Claire thought it was part of his cufflink.

But Adrian never wore black cufflinks.

He hated anything that didn't match his suits.

She stepped closer.

The security guards finally reached them.

"Ma’am, please move away."

Claire ignored him.

She knelt beside Adrian.

The entire ballroom watched.

Some guests whispered that she was in shock.

Others whispered that she looked too calm.

They were right.

Claire was calm.

Not because she wasn't afraid.

Because she was thinking.

She had learned long ago that fear made people careless.

And careless people revealed secrets.

She carefully touched Adrian’s hand.

It was still warm.

"Adrian," she whispered.

No response.

Her heart wanted to break.

But her mind refused to stop.

Then she saw it.

His fingers were slightly curled.

Almost like he had been trying to hold something before he fell.

Claire gently opened his hand.

Inside was a tiny silver memory chip.

Hidden beneath his wedding ring.

Her breathing stopped.

Why would Adrian hide something like this?

Why would he keep it from her?

And why did he make sure she would be the one to find it?

"Claire."

The voice behind her made her turn.

It was Daniel.

He was standing several feet away.

Too far to help.

Too close to watch.

"You need to give that to security."

His voice sounded controlled.

Too controlled.

Claire looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Claire noticed.

"Because it's evidence."

Claire looked back at the memory chip.

"Evidence of what?"

Daniel said nothing.

The silence answered for him.

Around them, the guests continued whispering.

Some believed Adrian had been targeted by a business rival.

Some believed it was connected to his family.

Some believed Claire knew more than she was saying.

That last rumor spread the fastest.

Because Claire Han was not crying.

She was not screaming.

She was not collapsing beside her husband.

She was searching.

And powerful people were always afraid of someone who searched too carefully.

Five years earlier, Claire had met Adrian at a small bookstore in Seoul.

Back then, he was not wearing expensive watches or surrounded by bodyguards.

He was just a tired man sitting alone in the corner, reading an old detective novel.

Claire remembered that day because Adrian had looked peaceful.

Almost normal.

She had asked him why a billionaire was hiding in a bookstore instead of attending some luxury event.

He smiled and answered:

"Because books don't lie."

At the time, she laughed.

She thought he was joking.

She later learned Adrian did not joke about much.

Especially when it came to people.

During their relationship, Claire discovered that Adrian kept files on everyone close to him.

Employees.

Business partners.

Even friends.

She once asked him why.

His answer bothered her.

"Because betrayal never comes from strangers."

She hated that sentence.

Because she knew Adrian was right.

The wedding was supposed to be the day he finally stopped expecting danger.

A fresh start.

A moment where he could let his guard down.

But someone had chosen this exact moment to prove him wrong.

Hours later, after Adrian was rushed to the hospital, the police questioned every guest.

The ballroom became a crime scene.

The perfect wedding became the biggest mystery in the country.

But Claire kept one thing hidden.

The memory chip.

She had placed it inside the secret pocket of her wedding dress before anyone could see.

Not because she wanted to protect evidence.

Because she didn't trust anyone in that room.

Not even the police.

Not even Adrian’s own family.

Especially not the people who looked the most worried.

At midnight, Claire sat alone in the hospital waiting room.

Her white wedding dress was still stained from the marble floor.

Her hands were shaking now.

The shock had finally arrived.

She looked through the glass window.

Adrian was inside the emergency room.

Doctors moved around him.

Machines surrounded him.

The man who had always controlled every situation was now fighting for his life.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she remembered something.

Two days before the wedding, Adrian had called her.

He sounded different.

Serious.

Afraid.

"Claire, if anything happens to me..."

She had interrupted him.

"Don't say things like that."

But Adrian continued.

"Promise me you won't believe the first person who tells you the truth."

She remembered laughing.

"That doesn't even make sense."

"It will."

Those were the last private words he ever said to her.

Now they felt like instructions.

Claire pulled out her phone.

She stared at the memory chip.

There was only one way to know why Adrian hid it.

She needed to open it.

But before she could connect it to her laptop, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Claire answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice came through.

Quiet.

Distorted.

"You found what Adrian left for you."

Claire froze.

"Who is this?"

The voice ignored her.

"You should have walked away from him when you had the chance."

Claire stood up.

"How do you know I have it?"

A pause.

Then:

"Because I was the one who put it there."

The call ended.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her hands tightened around the phone.

Someone had placed the memory chip in Adrian’s hand.

Someone wanted her to find it.

And someone had been watching her the entire night.

She looked toward the hospital hallway.

The lights flickered once.

Then again.

A nurse walked past quickly.

Claire noticed something on the floor near the emergency room door.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Claire Han.

She slowly picked it up.

There was only one sentence on the front:

"Do not let Adrian wake up before you read this."

May you like

Claire opened the envelope.

And the first thing she saw was a photograph of someone she thought had disappeared forever...
