Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

The door handle stopped moving.
Nobody inside the room spoke.
Claire Han stared at the entrance.
Evelyn stood beside her.
Daniel was frozen near the window.
For several seconds, the only sound was Adrian’s heartbeat monitor.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Do not open it."
Claire looked at her.
"Why?"
Evelyn’s eyes never left the door.
"Because the person outside is the reason I disappeared."
The words hit harder than the gunshot from the wedding.
Claire slowly turned toward the door again.
Someone was standing outside.
Waiting.
Not knocking.
Not calling security.
Just waiting.
Like they knew Claire would eventually open it.
Daniel moved closer.
"How did you get here?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"You still ask the wrong questions."
Daniel’s face changed.
"You were alive."
Evelyn looked away.
"For eight years."
"Why didn't you come back?"
A painful silence filled the room.
Then Evelyn answered:
"Because every person who tried to find me ended up hurt."
Claire watched them carefully.
The conversation between brother and sister felt impossible.
Not like two family members reunited after years apart.
Like two people who had been carrying the same secret in different ways.
Claire stepped forward.
"Someone explain what is happening."
Neither of them answered immediately.
That bothered her more than anything.
They weren't confused.
They were afraid.
Evelyn looked at Claire.
"Adrian never told you the truth about our family."
"No."
"He wanted to."
Claire looked at Adrian.
"He made that video."
Evelyn nodded.
"He knew he couldn't protect you forever."
Claire tightened her grip on the envelope.
"The person who attacked him..."
Evelyn interrupted.
"Was not trying to kill him."
Claire frowned.
"What?"
"They were trying to scare him."
Daniel shook his head.
"No. The shooter had a clear shot."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Exactly."
The room became silent.
Claire understood.
The shooter could have killed Adrian.
But didn't.
The bullet missed a fatal point.
The attack happened publicly.
In front of hundreds of witnesses.
It was not an assassination.
It was a message.
Someone wanted Adrian to know they were back.
And they wanted Claire to see it.
"Who is behind this?" Claire asked.
Evelyn looked toward Adrian.
"The same person who destroyed our family."
Claire waited.
But Evelyn didn't continue.
Claire's patience disappeared.
"No more secrets."
Her voice was quiet.
But firm.
"My husband was shot on our wedding day. Someone entered his hospital room. Someone sent me evidence. Someone is watching us."
She looked at Daniel.
"And both of you keep acting like I'm a child who needs protection."
Nobody spoke.
Claire stepped closer.
"I am his wife."
The room became still.
"I deserve the truth."
Evelyn studied her.
Then slowly nodded.
"Adrian chose well."
Claire looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he was right about you."
Before Claire could ask, the lights returned.
The door suddenly opened.
A nurse walked in.
She stopped when she saw Evelyn.
Her face changed.
Then she dropped the files in her hands.
"No..."
Evelyn looked at her.
The nurse stepped backward.
"You're..."
She couldn't finish.
Daniel immediately moved.
"Leave."
The nurse looked between them.
Then ran.
Claire watched her disappear down the hallway.
"She knew you."
Evelyn said nothing.
Claire looked at Daniel.
"And now she will tell someone."
Daniel's expression became serious.
"Yes."
The simplicity of his answer scared Claire.
"You knew this would happen."
Daniel looked away.
"Everyone who sees Evelyn alive becomes part of this."
Claire picked up the phone that contained Adrian’s video.
"Then maybe it's time everyone becomes part of it."
She walked back to Adrian’s bed.
The memory chip was still on the table.
She picked it up.
Evelyn watched.
"Claire."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
"Before you watch everything on that chip, you need to understand something."
"What?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"Adrian wasn't investigating my disappearance."
Claire frowned.
"What was he doing?"
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
Then back at Claire.
"He was investigating his own father."
The words changed the entire room.
Claire slowly looked at Daniel.
"Your father?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because he didn't need to.
The silence was enough.
Adrian’s father had died years ago.
Or at least…
That was what everyone believed.
Claire remembered the wedding.
A portrait of Adrian’s parents had been displayed near the entrance.
A perfect family image.
A successful businessman.
A loving wife.
Two children.
A beautiful lie.
"His father died eight years ago," Claire said.
Evelyn nodded.
"That's what everyone was told."
Claire felt a chill.
"Wasn't it true?"
Evelyn walked toward the window.
"Adrian spent eight years trying to prove the truth."
Daniel looked angry.
"Stop."
Evelyn turned.
"You can't protect him anymore."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"You don't know what will happen."
"I know exactly what will happen."
Evelyn pointed toward Adrian.
"He already found the evidence."
Claire looked at the memory chip.
"What evidence?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she walked toward the hospital room door.
She touched the handle.
Then stopped.
"There is something you need to see."
Claire followed her.
"What?"
Evelyn opened the door slightly.
Outside the hallway was empty.
But on the wall opposite Adrian’s room was a security camera.
The small red light was blinking.
Someone was watching.
Evelyn looked at Claire.
"That camera was disconnected three hours ago."
Claire looked at the screen.
"Then why is it recording?"
Nobody answered.
Evelyn reached into her coat pocket.
She removed a small key.
An old metal key.
Claire recognized it immediately.
It matched the engraving on Adrian’s hidden cufflink.
The same symbol.
The same mark.
"What is that?"
Evelyn looked at the key.
"Something Adrian wanted you to have."
Claire took it.
On the key was a number.
Not a room number.
Not a date.
A location.
Daniel saw it.
His face immediately changed.
"Where did you get that?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"From the place where Adrian hid the truth."
Claire looked at the number.
"Where is it?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Claire, don't."
She ignored him.
"Where?"
Evelyn whispered:
"The old Park family estate."
Claire froze.
The Park estate had been abandoned years ago.
Nobody went there.
Not even family.
Because everyone believed something terrible happened there.
Claire looked at Adrian.
Then at Evelyn.
"Why would he hide evidence there?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because the person who destroyed our family never left."
A sound interrupted them.
A notification.
Claire’s phone.
Another unknown message.
She looked down.
One sentence appeared.
"Don't trust Evelyn."
Claire slowly raised her eyes.
Evelyn was staring at her.
At the same moment, another message arrived.
A photograph.
Claire opened it.
Her blood turned cold.
The picture showed Evelyn entering the hospital.
But it was taken eight years ago.
On the exact night she disappeared.

And standing beside Evelyn in the photo was the person Claire thought had died...
Adrian’s father.
