Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Returned From The Dead

Daniel Harrison couldn't move.
The phone was still in his hand.
The call had ended.
But the voice remained.
"Daniel?"
Emma.
His wife.
The woman who was supposed to be gone.
The woman whose funeral he had attended.
The woman whose photograph he kept hidden because looking at it hurt too much.
She had spoken his name.
Alive.
Real.
Standing somewhere in the world.
"Dad?"
Sophie's voice pulled him back.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
She was staring at him.
Waiting.
He forced himself to breathe.
"Emma is alive."
The words came out quietly.
Nobody moved.
Lily covered her mouth.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting years to hear those words.
Daniel turned toward Thomas.
"You knew."
Thomas didn't deny it.
"I knew she survived."
Daniel felt anger rising again.
"How long?"
Thomas looked down.
"Five years."
The room became silent.
Five years.
Daniel had spent five years mourning.
Five years believing his wife was gone.
Five years raising Sophie alone.
And Thomas had known there was a chance Emma was alive.
"You let me bury her."
Thomas looked at him.
"I let you believe she was dead because that was the only way to keep you alive."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You don't get to decide that."
"No."
Thomas nodded.
"I don't."
His voice became heavier.
"But Emma did."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Thomas walked to the table and picked up the old folder.
"Before she disappeared, she gave me instructions."
Daniel stared at him.
"Instructions?"
"She told me if she couldn't return, I had to protect you and Sophie from the truth until you were ready."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Ready?"
He pointed around the room.
"My entire life just collapsed."
Thomas didn't argue.
"Because you finally saw what Emma saw."
Daniel looked at the laptop.
The files.
The hidden messages.
The secrets.
Then he remembered his father's words.
The old Harrison estate.
The person who knows where Emma is.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
"We're going there."
Thomas immediately stood.
"No."
Daniel looked at him.
"No?"
"Richard knows we know."
Daniel stopped.
Thomas continued.
"He told you to go there."
"So?"
"So it's exactly what he wants."
Daniel stared at him.
"You think my father is setting a trap."
Thomas nodded.
"I think your father has been planning this moment for years."
Daniel hated hearing it.
Because he still wanted to believe Richard was innocent.
The man who taught him how to walk.
The man who taught him business.
The man who told him to always protect family.
But now Daniel didn't know what family meant anymore.
Lily stepped forward.
"I know the estate."
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
"Emma took me there once."
Thomas looked surprised.
"When?"
"Before she disappeared."
Daniel watched Lily carefully.
"What did she show you?"
Lily hesitated.
"A room."
"What room?"
"The basement."
Daniel felt a strange chill.
The old Harrison estate had been abandoned after his mother died.
At least, that's what he had been told.
Nobody went there.
Not even Richard.
"Why would Emma take you there?"
Lily looked at him.
"Because she said the truth was hidden underneath your family's house."
Daniel didn't speak.
An hour later, they left.
Daniel insisted Sophie stay with them.
He wasn't leaving his daughter behind.
Not after everything.
The drive outside Chicago was quiet.
Nobody talked.
Everyone was thinking about the same thing.
What would they find?
And who would they find?
When the Harrison estate appeared in the distance, Daniel felt something strange.
He had been there thousands of times as a child.
But now it looked different.
The large gates were covered in rust.
The mansion stood empty.
Cold.
Almost forgotten.
Daniel parked the car.
Thomas looked toward the building.
"I never thought I'd come back here."
Daniel glanced at him.
"Why?"
Thomas looked serious.
"Because this is where everything started."
They walked toward the front door.
It opened before Daniel touched it.
Everyone stopped.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
"Was that you?"
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
A cold silence followed.
The door slowly moved wider.
Someone had opened it from inside.
Daniel stepped forward.
The house was dark.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old family portraits hung on the walls.
Daniel looked at them.
His childhood.
His parents.
His life before everything became complicated.
Then Lily stopped.
"Dad."
Daniel turned.
She was pointing at a photograph.
A family photograph.
Richard.
Daniel.
His mother.
And someone else.
A young woman standing behind them.
Daniel had never seen her before.
"Who is that?"
Thomas walked closer.
His face changed.
"That's impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"You know her?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Because he was staring at the woman in the photograph.
The woman who looked exactly like Emma.
Except younger.
And standing beside Daniel's mother.
Daniel took the frame from the wall.
On the back was a date.
Seven years before Emma's death.
And a handwritten note.
"She knows the truth about what happened to your mother."
Daniel's hands shook.
"My mother?"
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
"We need to find the basement."
They moved deeper into the house.
Every room held memories.
Daniel's childhood.
His parents' arguments.
His mother's laughter.
Things he had forgotten.
Until now.
At the end of the hallway was a locked wooden door.
The basement.
Daniel reached for the handle.
Locked.
Thomas looked around.
"Emma said there was another way."
Lily walked closer.
She touched the wall beside the door.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at her.
She pressed a small mark hidden beneath the wallpaper.
A click echoed.
The wall moved.
A secret passage opened.
Daniel stared.
His family had hidden an entire room inside their own home.
They entered slowly.
Inside was a small underground office.
Old documents covered the desk.
Photos.
Files.
Recordings.
And one thing sitting in the center.
A phone.
An old phone.
Still connected.
Daniel walked toward it.
The screen was lit.
One new message.
From Emma.
His hands shook as he opened it.
"Daniel, if you found this room, it means you finally know the truth."
A second message appeared.
"Do not trust the person who brought you here."
Daniel slowly turned around.
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas.
Lily.
Sophie.
Nobody spoke.
Then the phone received one final message.
A name appeared on the screen.
May you like
And Daniel's face changed completely.
Because the person Emma warned him about was standing right behind him...
