Chapter 3 - The Girl My Wife Tried To Protect

A black SUV stopped outside the school gates, and a man stepped out: "Daniel Harrison."

Daniel froze.

The man held an old leather folder belonging to Emma Harrison. Inside was a photograph Daniel had never seen before. On the back, only four words were written: "Protect Lily at all costs."

Daniel suddenly realized his wife's secret had never died with her.

The man standing in front of him was older than Daniel remembered.

His hair was almost completely gray now.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But Daniel knew him.

Thomas Reed.

A former employee of Harrison Industries.

A man who had disappeared from Chicago six years ago.

A man Daniel believed had left the country after a major business dispute.

"What are you doing here?" Daniel asked.

Thomas looked past him toward Lily.

"She finally told you."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Told me what?"

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, his eyes moved toward Sophie.

The little girl was standing beside the driver, holding her backpack tightly.

"Is that Emma's daughter?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"Don't talk about my family like you know them."

Thomas looked hurt.

"I knew Emma better than you think."

Those words hit harder than Daniel expected.

Because there was one thing he hated more than secrets.

Being the last person to know the truth.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You disappeared six years ago."

"I had to."

"Why?"

Thomas looked at Lily.

"Because people were looking for her."

Daniel glanced at the teenage girl.

Lily stood silently.

Her hands were shaking.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Thomas reached into his coat and pulled out the leather folder.

"I expected you not to believe anything."

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel hesitated.

Then he opened it.

The first thing he saw was a photograph.

Emma.

His wife.

Standing outside a small apartment building.

Beside her was Lily.

But Lily was much younger.

Maybe eleven years old.

Daniel stared at the picture.

His heart started beating faster.

"When was this taken?"

"Seven years ago."

Daniel looked up.

"That's impossible."

"No. What's impossible is that Emma kept this from you."

Daniel felt anger rising.

"My wife would have told me."

Thomas gave a sad smile.

"Would she?"

Daniel said nothing.

Because deep down, he knew Emma had always protected people.

Even from him.

The folder contained documents.

School records.

Medical reports.

Letters.

Everything connected to Lily.

But one page made Daniel stop.

A handwritten letter.

The handwriting was Emma's.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

The letter began:

"Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that I couldn't prevent."

He stopped.

The words blurred for a second.

Thomas watched quietly.

"She wrote that before she died."

Daniel looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because Emma knew someone would come after Lily."

"Who?"

Thomas didn't answer.

That made Daniel even more frustrated.

"Everyone keeps saying the same thing. Everyone knows something except me."

Thomas looked at him seriously.

"Because Emma wanted to keep you alive."

Daniel stared.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Your wife wasn't just helping a homeless teenager."

He looked at Lily.

"She was protecting the only person who could expose what happened five years ago."

Daniel felt a chill.

"What happened five years ago?"

Thomas looked at the school.

Then at Sophie.

"We can't talk here."

Daniel immediately became protective.

"You brought this to my daughter?"

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"I came because Lily was about to disappear again."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"What does he mean?"

The teenager finally spoke.

"I was going to leave."

Daniel turned toward her.

"Why?"

Lily looked down.

"Because now that you know about me, they know too."

A cold silence followed.

Daniel looked around.

The school entrance was crowded.

Parents.

Students.

Teachers.

Everything seemed normal.

But suddenly, nothing felt safe.

"Who are they?" Daniel asked.

Lily didn't answer.

Thomas did.

"The same people who made your wife hide this."

Daniel held the folder tighter.

"My wife died in an accident."

Thomas looked away.

Daniel noticed.

"You don't believe that."

Thomas stayed silent.

"You don't believe my wife died by accident."

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Daniel felt his entire body tense.

"Then tell me the truth."

Thomas looked directly into his eyes.

"Emma was investigating someone inside Harrison Industries."

Daniel froze.

Inside his own company.

"Who?"

Thomas didn't respond.

Instead, he looked at Sophie.

"Not here."

Daniel hated that answer.

But he hated more that Thomas looked afraid.

Daniel had seen fear before.

From employees.

From competitors.

From people who wanted something.

But Thomas wasn't afraid of Daniel.

He was afraid of someone else.

Daniel closed the folder.

"We're leaving."

Sophie walked toward him.

"Dad?"

He looked at his daughter.

"We're going home."

Lily stepped forward.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"I didn't want you to find out this way."

Daniel turned around.

"How did you know my wife?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Because your wife saved my life."

Daniel didn't move.

"What?"

Lily looked at the ground.

"I was eleven years old. I had nobody."

Her voice became softer.

"Emma found me."

Daniel felt something break inside.

Because that sounded exactly like his wife.

She always found people nobody else noticed.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Lily looked at him.

"Because she was scared you would become a target."

Daniel shook his head.

"My wife trusted me."

Lily's eyes filled with sadness.

"She did."

A pause.

"That's why she didn't tell you."

Those words confused him.

Before he could ask more, Thomas's phone suddenly vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

Daniel noticed.

"What happened?"

Thomas didn't answer.

He turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

"Daniel knows. Move Lily tonight."

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew.

He looked toward the street.

The black SUV was still there.

But the driver was gone.

"Who sent that?" Daniel asked.

Thomas locked the phone.

"We need to leave now."

Daniel grabbed Lily's backpack.

"No more secrets."

He looked at both of them.

"You're going to tell me everything."

They reached Daniel's car.

Sophie climbed inside.

Lily stood beside the passenger door.

Then she suddenly stopped.

Her face went pale.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

Lily slowly pointed toward the back seat.

There was something lying there.

A small envelope.

Daniel stared at it.

Nobody had been inside his car.

Nobody except him.

He opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Emma.

Taken the night she died.

And written across the back was a message in fresh black ink:

"Ask your father why he let her die."
