Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind Lily's Smile

Daniel Harrison stared at the paused security footage on his office monitor.

The image was grainy, but he could still see everything clearly.

Sophie was sitting on the sidewalk outside Westbridge Academy.

Lily was beside her.

And behind the iron school gate, standing in the shadows, was a man Daniel recognized immediately.

His own father.

Richard Harrison.

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

That was impossible.

His father had not visited Westbridge Academy in years.

Richard was seventy-two years old, a retired businessman who spent most of his time at his private estate outside the city.

He rarely left home.

He rarely involved himself in Daniel's life.

And he had never shown interest in Sophie.

But there he was.

Watching.

Waiting.

Daniel replayed the footage.

The same moment appeared again.

Richard stood near the gate for almost ten minutes.

He wasn't walking by.

He wasn't passing through.

He was watching Lily.

Daniel felt a strange pressure in his chest.

He grabbed his phone and called his father's assistant.

The call connected after three rings.

"Mr. Harrison's office."

"This is Daniel. Where is my father right now?"

There was a pause.

"Sir?"

"Answer me."

The assistant sounded nervous.

"Mr. Richard Harrison is at home. He has been there all afternoon."

Daniel looked back at the screen.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, sir."

Daniel ended the call.

Someone was lying.

The question was who.

That night, Daniel couldn't sleep.

He sat in the dark living room while Sophie slept upstairs.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

He looked around at the expensive furniture, the artwork, the things he had bought because he thought they represented success.

But all he could think about was his daughter's laughter on a sidewalk.

A place he would never have allowed her to sit.

A person he would never have allowed her to meet.

Yet somehow, that was the happiest moment he had seen from Sophie in months.

The next morning, Daniel made a decision.

He would find out who Lily really was.

Not because he wanted to remove her from Sophie's life.

But because something about the situation felt wrong.

He drove back to Westbridge Academy alone.

When Daniel arrived, the school gates were already open.

Students walked inside.

Teachers greeted parents.

Everything looked normal.

But Daniel wasn't looking for normal.

He was looking for answers.

He found the school principal, Margaret Collins, in her office.

She smiled politely when she saw him.

"Mr. Harrison. I wasn't expecting you."

"I need information about a student."

Margaret's smile faded slightly.

"Which student?"

"A teenage girl named Lily."

The principal became quiet.

That reaction told Daniel everything.

"You know her."

Margaret looked away.

"Mr. Harrison, I don't think this is something you should involve yourself in."

Daniel stepped closer.

"My daughter has been spending time with her for three weeks. I think I have every reason to ask questions."

Margaret sighed.

"Lily isn't a student here."

"Then why is she always outside this school?"

The principal didn't answer.

Daniel watched her carefully.

"You know who she is."

After several seconds, Margaret finally spoke.

"Her name is Lily Carter."

"How old?"

"Seventeen."

"Family?"

The principal hesitated.

"None that we know of."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she has been living on her own."

Daniel looked surprised.

"On her own?"

Margaret nodded.

"She was once a very bright student. She had a scholarship at another school. She was preparing for college."

"What happened?"

The principal looked uncomfortable.

"Something happened with her family."

"What?"

"I don't know the entire story."

Daniel didn't believe her.

"You don't know?"

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Or maybe I know enough to understand that some stories should stay buried."

The words bothered Daniel.

Stories should stay buried.

He had heard that phrase before.

Years ago.

From his father.

Daniel left the school with more questions than answers.

Outside the gate, he found Sophie waiting with her driver.

She ran toward him.

"Dad!"

Daniel smiled.

But before he could speak, Sophie noticed his expression.

"Is something wrong?"

Daniel looked at her.

Children always noticed more than adults expected.

"No. I just wanted to ask you something."

"About Lily?"

Daniel froze.

"How did you know?"

Sophie looked down.

"Because everyone asks about her."

"Who is everyone?"

Sophie became quiet.

"People at school."

Daniel crouched beside her.

"Sophie, did Lily ever tell you anything about her family?"

Sophie thought for a moment.

"She told me she had someone who loved her once."

"Who?"

"My mom."

Daniel stopped breathing for a second.

His wife.

Emma.

The woman who had passed away five years earlier.

"What did you say?"

Sophie looked confused.

"She said my mom helped her."

Daniel stood slowly.

"My mom never met Lily."

Sophie shook her head.

"She did."

The confidence in her voice frightened him.

"How do you know?"

"Because Lily showed me something."

"What?"

Sophie reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

His hands became cold.

Because he recognized every letter.

Every curve.

Every mark.

It was his wife's handwriting.

The note was simple.

Only one sentence.

"Take care of the girl nobody sees."

Daniel stared at the words.

His wife's handwriting had always been elegant.

He knew it better than anyone.

But that note created a question he couldn't ignore.

Why would his wife write about Lily?

And why had he never known?

"Sophie," Daniel whispered.

"When did Lily give you this?"

"Yesterday."

"Why didn't you show me?"

Sophie looked sad.

"Because she told me you would be angry."

Daniel felt hurt.

"Why would she think that?"

Sophie didn't answer.

She just looked toward the school entrance.

Daniel followed her eyes.

Lily was standing there.

Watching them.

When she saw Daniel holding the note, her face changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something deeper.

Like she knew this moment would eventually happen.

Daniel walked toward her.

"Lily."

She didn't move.

"You knew my wife?"

The teenager looked at the ground.

"Yes."

"When?"

Lily swallowed.

"Before she died."

Daniel felt the world become quiet.

"My wife died five years ago."

"I know."

"Then explain."

Lily looked at Sophie.

Then back at Daniel.

"I promised her I wouldn't say anything unless Sophie needed me."

Daniel's heart started beating faster.

"Needed you for what?"

Lily reached into her backpack.

Her fingers touched something hidden inside.

Something she had been protecting.

"I think it's time you knew why your wife found me."

Daniel stared at the backpack.

"What is inside?"

Lily slowly opened the zipper.

Then suddenly stopped.

Her eyes moved past Daniel.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel turned around.

A black SUV had stopped outside the school gate.

The same vehicle from the security footage.

The back door opened.

And someone stepped out.

Someone Daniel never expected to see again...
