Chapter 4 - The Truth Hidden In Emma's Last Letter

Daniel Harrison stared at the photograph in his hand.

His wife's face looked exactly the way he remembered.

The same smile.

The same eyes.

The same woman who had promised him they would grow old together.

But the message written behind the photograph destroyed every peaceful memory attached to it.

"Ask your father why he let her die."

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't move.

The world around him continued.

Cars passed.

Students walked through the school gates.

People talked and laughed.

But Daniel heard nothing.

Only one sentence repeated in his mind.

His father.

Richard Harrison.

The man who had raised him.

The man who had built the company with him.

The man standing outside the school watching Lily.

Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.

Thomas Reed watched his reaction carefully.

"I knew this would hurt."

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew?"

Thomas didn't answer.

That was enough.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

"No more."

His voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

"No more half-truths. No more warnings. No more people telling me something is wrong and refusing to tell me why."

Thomas looked at him.

"You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Then you need to understand something first."

Daniel waited.

"Your wife didn't die because she discovered a problem."

Thomas paused.

"She died because she got too close to the person who created it."

Daniel felt his hand tighten.

"Who?"

Thomas looked toward Lily.

The teenager stood beside the car, holding her backpack.

She looked terrified.

"Before I tell you, you need to hear it from her."

Daniel turned.

"Lily."

The girl slowly walked closer.

For the first time since they met, Daniel saw something different in her expression.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Guilt.

"I should have told you sooner."

Daniel looked at her.

"Told me what?"

Lily took a deep breath.

"Your wife wasn't just helping me."

She looked down.

"She was investigating what happened to my family."

Daniel frowned.

"What happened to your family?"

Lily squeezed the strap of her backpack.

"My father worked for Harrison Industries."

Daniel froze.

"What was his name?"

Lily looked at him.

"Andrew Carter."

The name meant nothing at first.

Then Daniel remembered.

A former financial director.

A man who disappeared after being accused of stealing company funds.

The news had destroyed him.

Daniel had been twenty-nine years old at the time.

He remembered his father calling him into his office.

Richard had told him Andrew Carter was dangerous.

That he had betrayed the company.

That they had to protect their reputation.

"What does your father have to do with Emma?"

Lily looked at the ground.

"My father didn't steal anything."

Daniel said nothing.

"He found something."

"What?"

Lily hesitated.

"Financial records."

Thomas stepped in.

"Records showing someone inside Harrison Industries had been moving money through fake accounts."

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"Who?"

Thomas remained silent.

Again.

Daniel was tired of silence.

"Who?"

Lily answered.

"Your father knew."

The words hit harder than expected.

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

Lily looked at him.

"Emma found the same records years later."

Daniel shook his head.

"My father wouldn't do that."

Thomas looked at him sadly.

"You said the same thing five years ago."

Daniel remembered.

The argument.

The night before Emma died.

She had come home carrying documents.

She was nervous.

She told him she needed to talk about his father.

Daniel had refused.

He had been angry.

He had told her she didn't understand business.

He had told her she was wrong.

The next morning, Emma was gone.

The police called it an accident.

A rainy road.

A lost control of the vehicle.

A tragedy.

Daniel had spent five years believing that.

But now every memory felt different.

"Why didn't she tell me everything?"

Lily's eyes softened.

"Because she tried."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Lily reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I found this after she died."

Daniel stared at it.

"Where?"

"She hid it in the place where she knew someone would find it."

Daniel took the envelope.

His hands shook.

Inside was another letter.

This one was longer.

The handwriting was Emma's.

Daniel read the first line.

"My Daniel, if you are reading this, I failed to protect everyone."

His breathing became heavier.

He continued.

"I know you will be angry that I kept secrets from you. But I needed time. I needed proof. And most importantly, I needed to keep you away from the people who would hurt you."

Daniel stopped.

The letter continued.

"I discovered that Andrew Carter was innocent. Someone framed him because he found evidence against them."

Daniel looked up.

"Someone?"

Thomas nodded.

Daniel continued.

"The person behind this is someone you trust. Someone who has been beside you your entire life."

His hands became cold.

The sentence felt impossible.

Because there were only a few people in the world Daniel trusted completely.

His father.

His closest executives.

His family.

He kept reading.

"I wanted to tell you everything. But every time I got closer to the truth, someone knew."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"You."

Lily nodded.

"She found me because my father left clues before he disappeared."

Daniel looked back at the letter.

The final paragraph was shorter.

And it terrified him.

"Daniel, if anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who tells you I died in an accident."

The paper slipped slightly from his hand.

Thomas looked away.

Daniel whispered:

"She knew."

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone except him.

Suddenly, Sophie stepped closer.

"Dad?"

Daniel quickly folded the letter.

He didn't want his daughter to see his fear.

But Sophie was watching him.

She always noticed.

"Are you okay?"

Daniel forced himself to smile.

"I'm fine."

But the lie sounded weak.

Because for the first time in years, Daniel realized his entire life might have been built on another person's lie.

They left the school immediately.

Daniel drove them to a private apartment he owned downtown.

Not his home.

Not a place connected to his company.

A place nobody knew about.

When they arrived, Daniel locked every door.

Thomas noticed.

"You're finally starting to understand."

Daniel looked at him.

"Understand what?"

"That the person who wanted Emma silent might already know you're looking."

Daniel stared.

"You think my father knows?"

Thomas didn't answer.

And that was worse than an answer.

Daniel walked to the window.

Chicago stretched below him.

Millions of people.

Millions of lives.

Somewhere among them was someone who had taken his wife.

Someone who had destroyed Lily's family.

Someone who had watched Daniel believe a lie for five years.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

Daniel looked at the screen.

One message.

A photo attachment.

He opened it.

His blood turned cold.

The picture showed Emma.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

But the timestamp was impossible.

It was taken three months after her funeral.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Thomas looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

"Where did you get that?"

Daniel looked at the message below the photo.

Only five words.

"She was never gone."

Then another message appeared.

A location.

And a name.

May you like

Daniel slowly looked at Thomas.

Because the name on the screen belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead...
