Chapter 8 - The Queen Who Returned From the Storm

The royal fortress was burning when we arrived.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
Enough to send a message.
The enemy wanted us to see it.
They wanted Adrian to understand that the place he had spent his entire life protecting could be taken from him.
The black stone walls that had stood for generations were covered in smoke.
The silver banners of Blackwood had been torn down.
And in their place…
a different symbol had been raised.
A crescent moon broken in half.
The mark of those who wanted the Moon Bloodline destroyed.
I stared at it from the mountain path.
Five years ago, I had run from every symbol that represented power.
Now I was looking directly at the symbol of the people who feared mine.
"They want you angry."
Adrian's voice came beside me.
I looked at him.
"Shouldn't I be?"
His gray eyes met mine.
"Yes."
The answer surprised me.
"But anger is useful only when you control it."
The wind moved through his black hair.
"The people inside want you to enter as a weapon."
I understood.
They wanted the Moon Heir.
The legend.
The power.
Not Evelyn.
"And what do you want me to enter as?"
Adrian looked at me for a long moment.
Then he answered.
"My equal."
The words hit harder than any command.
Because he meant them.
Not because prophecy said so.
Not because my blood demanded it.
Because he chose it.
The warriors prepared behind us.
The final approach.
The fortress gates were damaged, but not destroyed.
A sign.
They could have broken through completely.
They chose not to.
"They're waiting," I said.
Adrian nodded.
"They want a confrontation."
"With me."
"Yes."
I looked toward the fortress.
The place where I was supposed to become something.
A queen.
A symbol.
A threat.
But I still felt like the same woman who had collapsed in the snow.
The woman who believed survival was the only thing she deserved.
Maybe that was why the Moon Bloodline had survived.
Not because its heirs were powerful.
Because they knew what it felt like to be powerless.
"We go now."
Adrian raised his hand.
The warriors moved.
But before we reached the gate, I stopped.
Everyone turned.
Including Adrian.
"I go first."
His expression immediately changed.
"No."
I looked at him.
"You said I needed to choose."
The words silenced him.
"This is my choice."
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then slowly...
he lowered his hand.
"Then I walk beside you."
Not behind.
Not ahead.
Beside.
The gates opened.
Inside the fortress courtyard, dozens of wolves waited.
Some were royal guards.
Others were enemies.
At the center stood the traitors.
The members of the royal council.
And beside them...
Elias Voss.
I expected hatred.
I expected anger.
Instead, I felt something strange.
Pity.
Because he looked like a man who had spent his entire life chasing something he could never hold.
Power.
"You came."
Elias smiled.
Adrian stepped forward.
"You attacked my home."
Elias shrugged.
"You left me no choice."
I almost laughed.
People always said that.
No choice.
The excuse of those who made terrible decisions.
"You always had a choice."
Everyone looked at me.
Elias's smile faded.
"You sound like your mother."
"Good."
The answer came instantly.
His expression hardened.
"She made the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
"Believing kindness could save people."
I looked around.
At the broken fortress.
At the people he had manipulated.
At the war he created.
"No."
I shook my head.
"My mother believed people deserved a choice."
The air changed.
My wolf responded.
Not violently.
Not with anger.
With certainty.
"You're the one who couldn't accept that."
For the first time, Elias looked uncertain.
Adrian noticed.
So did everyone else.
Because fear was spreading.
Not from me.
From the truth.
A woman stepped forward from behind Elias.
I recognized her immediately.
Councilor Helena.
Except she wasn't standing with us.
She was standing beside them.
My heart sank.
Adrian's face became cold.
"Helena."
The older woman looked away.
"Forgive me."
Something inside me tightened.
The woman who saved my mother's letter.
The woman I thought was different.
Another betrayal.
"I don't understand."
Her eyes met mine.
And for a moment, I saw pain.
Real pain.
"Because I failed once."
The words confused me.
"Failed?"
She looked toward the broken moon symbol.
"When your mother died, I promised I would protect her daughter."
Silence.
"But I was too late."
The courtyard became still.
"I watched the elders destroy everything she built."
Her voice shook.
"And I have spent years trying to repair what I allowed to happen."
Elias looked annoyed.
"Enough."
Helena ignored him.
"The only way I could get close enough to destroy their plans was to pretend to join them."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You knew about the attack."
"I knew something was coming."
Her expression darkened.
"But not this."
A strange relief passed through me.
Not because everything was okay.
Because for once...
the truth was more complicated than betrayal.
Elias stepped forward.
"You are wasting time."
He looked at me.
"Do you really believe these people care about you?"
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
"Even him?"
My body became tense.
Elias smiled.
"The Alpha King has hidden something from you."
I looked at Adrian.
His expression changed.
A warning.
"Elias."
"What?"
The traitor laughed.
"She deserves the truth."
My heart started beating faster.
"What truth?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Elias said:
"The Alpha King knew about the prophecy before you were born."
Silence.
I turned toward Adrian.
His face was unreadable.
And that hurt.
Because I already knew.
There was another secret.
"Adrian."
He stepped forward.
"I knew parts of it."
"How much?"
A pause.
"Enough to know your life would never be normal."
The words cut.
I looked away.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was tired.
Tired of discovering pieces of myself from other people's mouths.
Elias smiled.
"See?"
"He was just like us."
"No."
I looked at him.
The answer surprised even me.
"He's not."
Everyone became silent.
I faced Adrian.
"Did you hide things from me?"
"Yes."
"Did you make choices for me?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"Never."
And that was the difference.
The elders took my life away.
Adrian protected my ability to choose.
I turned back toward Elias.
"You don't understand the difference."
His expression darkened.
"You are choosing him?"
I looked at Adrian.
The man who had knelt before me.
The man who waited for my permission.
The man who stood beside me when everyone else wanted something from me.
"I am choosing myself."
The words echoed through the courtyard.
And then something happened.
Something none of us expected.
The broken moon symbol above the fortress began to glow.
Silver light spread across the stone walls.
Everyone froze.
My wolf rose.
Not with anger.
With recognition.
The ancient mark of the Moon Bloodline had awakened.
Not because I demanded power.
Because I accepted who I was.
Helena whispered:
"The true heir..."
The warriors lowered their heads.
Even those who had stood against me.
Because the blood had spoken.
Not through fear.
Through truth.
Elias stepped backward.
"No."
For the first time, he looked small.
The man who controlled my life for five years.
The man who believed he could erase my existence.
Was afraid.
Adrian moved beside me.
"What happens now?"
I looked at the fortress.
At the kingdom.
At the future waiting for me.
For five years, I believed my destiny was something being forced upon me.
But destiny was not a chain.
It was a door.
And I was the one holding the key.
"We rebuild."
My voice carried.
"Not the old kingdom."
The silver light grew stronger.
"The new one."
The storm clouds above the fortress began to separate.
Moonlight touched the courtyard.
And for the first time in generations…
the Moon Bloodline returned.
Not as a weapon.
Not as a ruler.
But as a promise.
The war was not over.
The enemies were not gone.
But something had changed.
May you like
The woman who once poisoned herself to disappear...
had finally stopped hiding.
