Chapter 2 - The Alpha King Who Never Hunted Her

The words stayed between us.

They didn't disappear with the storm.

They didn't disappear with the fire crackling behind me or the wind shaking the old wooden walls of the lodge.

They remained.

They let you escape.

I stared at Adrian Blackwood, searching for the lie.

For the manipulation.

For the hidden command behind his calm expression.

Because that was what alphas did.

They controlled.

They promised.

They smiled while holding a knife behind their backs.

I had learned that lesson too many times to forget.

"Why?"

My voice came out weaker than I wanted.

Adrian did not move.

He remained kneeling several feet away from me, his dagger still lying on the floor between us.

A symbol.

A message.

I am not here to force you.

I hated that part of me noticed.

I hated that part of me believed him for even one second.

"Why would they let me escape?" I asked.

The Alpha King's gray eyes moved toward the document.

"Because running was part of their plan."

My stomach tightened.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I wanted it to be impossible.

Because if my escape had been planned, then every choice I had made for five years belonged to someone else.

Every cabin.

Every town.

Every night sleeping with one eye open.

Every morning drinking poison.

It would mean I had never truly been free.

Adrian watched the realization appear on my face.

"They wanted you afraid," he said quietly.

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

"Afraid?"

I looked around the lodge.

At the royal symbol.

At the man who had been the nightmare in every story I heard.

"You are the Alpha King. Your people told me exactly what would happen if you found me."

His expression darkened.

"What did they tell you?"

I hesitated.

Because saying it aloud made it real.

"They said you would claim me."

The fire cracked.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"They said I would take away my choice."

His silence was the answer.

Not because he agreed.

Because he was angry someone had made me believe that.

I pushed myself higher against the wall.

"You searched for me."

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

No excuses.

No denial.

"Why?"

His eyes met mine.

"Because someone tried to erase you."

My breath caught.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian slowly stood.

Not quickly.

Not threateningly.

Like he understood every sudden movement would make me run.

He walked toward the fireplace instead of me.

He picked up another piece of wood and placed it into the flames.

"The first report about you reached my territory five years ago."

I listened despite myself.

"The report said an omega had disappeared from Glacier Claw. It said you abandoned your pack. It said you were unstable."

My hands curled into fists.

"They called me defective."

"I know."

The quietness of his answer hurt more than anger would have.

"You knew?"

Adrian turned back.

"I knew the report was false."

"How?"

"Because the day before it was filed, I received a different message."

The room became colder.

"What message?"

His face hardened.

"A warning."

I stared at him.

"From who?"

"We don't know."

That answer bothered me.

The Alpha King didn't know something.

That meant it was serious.

Adrian continued.

"The message said one thing."

He paused.

"Do not come to Glacier Claw."

My heart skipped.

"Why?"

"Because if I came, they would move you before I reached you."

I shook my head.

"This doesn't make sense."

"It didn't to me either."

He walked back toward the table.

"The elders wanted me to believe you were gone. They wanted me to stop searching."

"Then why didn't you?"

A shadow crossed his face.

"Because I smelled your scent."

My body went still.

Five years.

The mysterious omega whose scent vanished.

The woman Adrian Blackwood could never find.

"You found me?"

"Almost."

The answer was barely audible.

"What happened?"

His eyes lowered.

"They poisoned your scent."

I froze.

"No."

"The same way you poisoned yourself."

The room fell silent.

I looked at my hands.

At the invisible damage I had done to myself.

"They knew wolfsbane would weaken my wolf."

"Yes."

"Then why would they let me escape?"

Adrian's expression changed.

Because this was the part he had been afraid to say.

"Because they needed you away from everyone."

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

"Needed me away?"

"They needed your blood to awaken."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

He looked at the faint silver-gold glow still visible beneath my skin.

"Evelyn, what happened tonight was not just your wolf returning."

I looked down.

The light pulsed softly.

Like something alive.

"What am I?"

For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.

Not afraid of me.

Afraid for me.

"Something Glacier Claw tried to hide for generations."

I wanted to demand answers.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, my body betrayed me.

The room tilted.

The poison leaving my system.

The awakening.

The exhaustion.

Everything crashed down at once.

Adrian moved immediately.

I flinched.

He stopped.

That tiny pause almost broke something inside me.

A man like him.

The Alpha King.

Stopping because I was afraid.

"I'm not going to hurt you," he said.

I hated how much I wanted to believe him.

"I don't trust you."

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised me.

He looked at me with a strange sadness.

"Trust is earned."

Then he carefully picked up a blanket from the chair and placed it on the floor several feet away.

Not touching me.

Not approaching.

Just leaving it there.

A choice.

My choice.

I watched him.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because five years ago, someone decided you had no choices."

His voice became colder.

"And I intend to find out who."

I looked at the document again.

The missing-person report.

The lie.

The plan.

Something inside me refused to accept it.

I had spent five years believing I was running from a predator.

But predators did not usually kneel.

They did not remove their weapons.

They did not look hurt when they learned what I had done to survive.

Unless they were better at pretending than anyone I had ever met.

A sudden sound cut through the lodge.

A crack.

Outside.

Adrian's entire body changed.

The softness vanished.

The king returned.

His eyes moved toward the window.

"Stay here."

The command came naturally.

I immediately hated it.

"No."

His attention returned to me.

For a moment, surprise crossed his face.

"I said stay—"

"I heard you."

I slowly stood despite the weakness.

"But I am not that woman anymore."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Approval.

Not anger.

"You still have no idea what you are dealing with."

"Neither do you."

The words came before I could stop them.

The corner of his mouth almost moved.

Almost.

Then the sound came again.

A howl.

Not from a normal wolf.

From something closer.

Something powerful.

Adrian walked toward the window.

His expression became deadly.

"They found us."

My blood turned cold.

"Who?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That scared me more.

Finally, he looked back at me.

"The people who spent five years making sure you stayed hidden."

The firelight reflected in his eyes.

"And the people who are terrified that I found you first."

Another howl echoed through the mountains.

Closer.

My wolf reacted instantly.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

A warning.

Adrian noticed.

"You feel them."

I nodded slowly.

"They know I'm here."

"No."

He looked toward the storm.

"They know you woke up."

The meaning of his words settled over me.

They had not been searching for me.

They had been waiting.

Waiting for the poison to fail.

Waiting for my wolf to return.

Waiting for something inside my blood to awaken.

I looked at Adrian.

"Why?"

His expression became unreadable.

"Because you are not just an omega."

The storm screamed outside.

The wolves approached.

And the Alpha King spoke the words that changed everything.

"You are the last descendant of the original Moon Bloodline."

I stared at him.

"No."

"It is why they needed you hidden."

My heartbeat became louder.

"It is why they feared you."

Adrian stepped closer to the window.

His hand moved toward the weapon at his side.

"And it is why they cannot allow you to live."

Outside, shadows moved through the snow.

Dozens of wolves.

Watching.

Waiting.

I had spent five years running from the world.

But now I understood something.

May you like

The world had never stopped looking for me.

It had only been waiting for me to become powerful enough to fight back.
