Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Beneath Glacier Claw

The journey to the royal fortress began before sunrise.

I expected fear.

I expected my body to resist.

I expected the same instinct that had kept me running for five years to scream at me to turn around.

But it didn't.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't running away from something.

I was walking toward it.

That realization terrified me more than anything.

The mountains were silent as we left the lodge behind.

The storm had finally weakened, leaving the forest covered in a layer of untouched snow.

Everything looked peaceful.

Beautiful.

Almost like the world had no idea it was standing on the edge of war.

Adrian walked ahead of me.

Not too far.

Not too close.

Always within reach.

I noticed it.

Of course I noticed it.

The Alpha King had spent his entire life commanding people.

Yet with me, he moved like every step needed permission.

That was strange.

A man with enough power to take anything he wanted was the only person who seemed determined not to take anything from me.

"You are thinking too loudly."

His voice broke the silence.

I looked at him.

"I thought wolves only sensed emotions."

"They do."

"Then how do you know what I'm thinking?"

A small almost-smile appeared.

"Because you have the same expression your mother had."

I stopped walking.

"My mother?"

Adrian slowed.

"She always looked like she was arguing with the world inside her head."

I looked away.

I didn't know whether that made me happy or hurt.

A memory surfaced.

A warm hand brushing my hair.

A quiet voice telling me stories about the moon.

I had spent years thinking those memories were all I had left.

Now I wondered how much of my past had been stolen.

"Tell me about her."

Adrian's expression softened.

"Her name was Lyra Vale."

The name sounded familiar.

Like a song I had forgotten.

"She was not born to be a queen."

I glanced at him.

"But she was the Moon Heir."

"Yes."

"How did she become one?"

"She never wanted the throne."

That surprised me.

"Then why did people follow her?"

Adrian looked toward the mountains.

"Because people follow those who don't chase power."

The words stayed with me.

Because that was the opposite of everything I had seen.

The elders wanted power.

The alphas who controlled weak packs wanted power.

Everyone seemed to want more.

But my mother...

She had apparently been dangerous because she didn't.

After hours of traveling, the royal fortress finally appeared.

It was carved into the mountain itself.

Black stone walls.

Ancient towers.

Silver flags moving in the cold wind.

It was not just a home.

It was a statement.

The kingdom of Blackwood.

The place where every wolf bowed to the Alpha King.

And now I was entering it.

The moment we reached the gates, dozens of warriors appeared.

Their eyes immediately moved toward me.

Some looked curious.

Some looked afraid.

Some looked angry.

I recognized that look.

People who had already decided what I was before knowing who I was.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Open the gates."

The guards bowed.

But one of them hesitated.

A man with a scar across his face.

"My king."

Adrian stopped.

"What?"

The warrior looked at me.

Then back at him.

"Are you certain?"

The question was dangerous.

Not because it challenged Adrian.

Because it revealed something.

The kingdom was not united.

Adrian's expression remained calm.

"About what?"

The warrior lowered his head.

"Bringing her here."

Silence.

I expected Adrian to become angry.

Instead, he answered quietly.

"She is not a threat."

The warrior looked at me.

"That is not what the council believes."

The gates opened.

But the words followed us inside.

The council.

I already knew what that meant.

Enemies with titles.

People who smiled while planning destruction.

The royal fortress was enormous.

Every hallway displayed generations of Alpha Kings.

Paintings.

Weapons.

Historical records.

A reminder of everything Adrian carried.

I wondered if anyone here knew what he had sacrificed.

Or if they only saw the crown.

We entered the central chamber.

The council was waiting.

Seven wolves sat around a long stone table.

The moment I stepped inside, the room became silent.

Then an older woman stood.

Her silver hair was pulled back tightly.

Her eyes were sharp.

Cold.

"Evelyn Vale."

She said my name like it was an accusation.

Adrian immediately moved slightly in front of me.

A protective gesture.

The woman noticed.

Her expression changed.

"Interesting."

"Councilor Helena," Adrian said.

"Do not start."

She ignored him.

"You bring the Moon Heir into the heart of your kingdom without informing the council."

"She is not a weapon."

"No?"

Helena looked at me.

"Then why does every prophecy mention her?"

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What prophecy?"

Nobody answered.

That was answer enough.

I looked at Adrian.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life hidden from me.

His jaw tightened.

"Not here."

Helena smiled.

"Still protecting her from the truth?"

My patience disappeared.

"I am standing right here."

The room went silent.

Every person looked at me.

I continued.

"If everyone knows something about my life except me, then maybe someone should finally explain."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Helena smiled.

Not kindly.

Respectfully.

And somehow that was worse.

"Your mother had the same fire."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Enough."

But Helena continued.

"The Moon Heir was never supposed to disappear."

She walked closer.

"The prophecy said she would either unite the wolves..."

She paused.

"Or destroy them."

Cold spread through me.

"Destroy?"

Helena looked at Adrian.

"Tell her."

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

"The Moon Bloodline has the ability to challenge the Alpha bond."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means an awakened Moon Heir cannot be controlled by an alpha."

I stared at him.

"Any alpha?"

"Any alpha."

My heart started beating faster.

"So they fear me because they can't control me."

"Yes."

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"After five years of believing I was powerless, I discover the world is afraid because I am the one person they cannot control."

No one answered.

Because it was true.

Then the doors opened.

A messenger rushed inside.

Everyone turned.

"My king."

Adrian looked at him.

"What happened?"

The messenger's face was pale.

"Glacier Claw has made an announcement."

The room changed.

Even the council looked uneasy.

"What announcement?" Adrian asked.

The messenger swallowed.

"They claim Evelyn Vale is not the true Moon Heir."

My blood went cold.

Silence.

Then the messenger continued.

"They say she is an imposter."

Helena slowly looked at me.

"And they have proof."

Adrian's expression became dangerous.

"What proof?"

The messenger lowered his voice.

"They have a blood sample."

Everything stopped.

A sample.

My blood.

The woman waiting beside the throne.

The secret from the original warning.

I remembered the words from the first night.

Someone had a sample of my blood.

Someone had been preparing for my awakening.

Adrian looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him...

I saw something close to fear.

Not fear of losing power.

Fear of losing me.

"They took it five years ago," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"What?"

His eyes darkened.

"The night you disappeared."

The room seemed to spin.

Five years ago.

The night I ran.

The night I thought I escaped.

Someone had taken a piece of me.

Someone had planned for this moment.

Helena stepped forward.

"Your Majesty."

Adrian did not look away from me.

"Prepare the warriors."

The council members stood.

"Are you declaring war?"

Adrian's voice was cold.

"No."

He looked at the doors.

"I'm going to Glacier Claw."

My heart stopped.

"Adrian."

He turned toward me.

"They stole your life."

His eyes burned with a promise.

"They lied to the world about who you are."

The Alpha King's wolf awakened beneath his skin.

"And now they will answer for it."

Outside the fortress, the moon rose above the mountains.

The same moon that had watched me hide for five years.

The same moon that had witnessed every lie.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

And this time...

May you like

I wasn't going back to Glacier Claw as a frightened omega running from her fate.

I was going back as the woman they had been afraid to create.
