Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Never Left

The bedroom door handle stopped moving.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
The darkness around us felt heavier than before.
I held my phone tightly, staring at the message.
"Your mother is alive."
Four words.
Four words that destroyed everything I thought I knew about my life.
My mother had died when I was seven years old.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered my father's face.
I remembered the empty house afterward.
I remembered being told that some people leave forever.
But now...
Someone was telling me she never left.
"Evelyn."
Victoria's voice was quiet.
I looked at her.
She looked as confused as I felt.
Rachel stood near the window, frozen.
But Carter...
Carter looked like he already knew.
That was the moment something inside me changed.
Not because of the message.
Because of his reaction.
"You knew."
My voice cut through the darkness.
Carter looked at me.
"What?"
"You knew."
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Don't lie to me again."
The anger in my voice surprised even me.
The old Evelyn would have cried.
The old Evelyn would have begged for an explanation.
But that woman was gone.
Carter looked away.
And that was enough.
Rachel whispered:
"He knew."
I turned toward her.
"What do you mean?"
Rachel stepped closer.
"Carter wasn't searching for your father's secrets."
She looked at him.
"He was searching for hers."
My heart dropped.
"My mother's?"
Carter finally spoke.
"Rachel, stop."
But she continued.
"Your mother disappeared ten years before I met you."
I stared.
"Disappeared?"
Rachel nodded.
"Not died."
The room felt like it was spinning.
"My father lied to me?"
Nobody answered.
And somehow that hurt the most.
Because everyone had been protecting a secret.
Everyone except me.
The lights suddenly came back on.
Everyone turned toward the door.
It was still closed.
But someone was standing outside.
A shadow appeared underneath the gap.
I stepped backward.
Victoria moved in front of me.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
Then the door opened.
Slowly.
An old woman stood there.
Her hair was darker than I expected.
Her face was older.
But my heart recognized her before my mind did.
I dropped the phone.
The world became silent.
Because I knew those eyes.
I knew that expression.
I knew the way she looked at me.
Like she had been waiting years for this moment.
"Evelyn..."
My knees almost gave out.
No.
It wasn't possible.
It couldn't be.
My voice came out as a whisper.
"Mom?"
The woman covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I thought I would never hear you call me that again."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't think.
Every memory from my childhood came rushing back.
The smell of her perfume.
The way she used to sing while cooking.
The way she held my hand.
And then...
The day she disappeared.
I looked at Carter.
Then at my mother.
Then back at Carter.
"What is happening?"
My mother stepped into the room.
"I wanted to come to you years ago."
Her voice broke.
"But I couldn't."
"Why?"
She looked at Carter.
And I understood.
Because everyone kept looking at Carter.
My mother's expression changed.
"Because of him."
The room went silent.
Carter immediately reacted.
"That isn't true."
My mother looked at him.
"You haven't changed."
Her voice was filled with disappointment.
"You still think you can control every story."
I stared at Carter.
"What did you do?"
He looked at me.
"Evelyn, listen."
"No."
I raised my hand.
"Everyone has told me to listen tonight."
I looked around the room.
"My entire life has been a story everyone wrote except me."
Nobody spoke.
My mother slowly walked toward me.
"I never wanted to leave you."
A tear rolled down her face.
"I was forced to."
I swallowed.
"By who?"
She looked at Carter.
And this time...
Carter had no answer.
My mother took a deep breath.
"Your father discovered what Carter and Beatrice were planning."
I looked at Beatrice.
She wasn't in the room.
But her name alone made my stomach tighten.
"What were they planning?"
My mother looked at Victoria.
Then Rachel.
Then me.
"To control your inheritance."
I shook my head.
"No."
My mother nodded.
"Yes."
She touched my hand.
"Your father built everything for you."
"The company."
"The trust."
"The mansion."
"Everything."
I looked around.
"But why?"
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Because he knew someone would try to take it."
I looked at Carter.
He was silent.
Too silent.
My mother continued.
"When your father discovered Carter was investigating your family, he confronted him."
Rachel nodded.
"I knew about that."
My mother looked at her.
"You were the first person who tried to expose him."
Rachel looked down.
"And I failed."
Carter suddenly laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
"You all think I'm the villain."
His expression became colder.
"But none of you know the truth."
I stared at him.
"Then tell me."
He looked at my mother.
"Ask her why she left."
My mother became pale.
The room changed.
Because for the first time...
Carter wasn't defending himself.
He was attacking.
My mother's hands trembled.
"What does that mean?"
I asked.
Carter looked at me.
"Your mother didn't disappear because of me."
He paused.
"She disappeared because she was hiding something from your father."
My heart tightened.
"What?"
Nobody moved.
Carter walked toward the desk.
He picked up the old envelope from my mother.
"You want the truth?"
He looked at me.
"Open this."
I stared.
"Where did you get that?"
He smiled slightly.
"Your father wasn't the only one who left messages."
I slowly took the envelope.
My mother's name was written on it.
Not mine.
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
"Mom?"
She whispered:
"Evelyn..."
But it was too late.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
My hands started shaking.
Because the handwriting was my mother's.
"If you ever find this, it means Carter finally told you the wrong truth."
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
Then I turned the paper over.
There was another line.
A name.
A name I had never heard before.
But Carter's reaction told me everything.
Because the moment he saw it...
His face completely changed.
The name was:
"Adrian Vale."
May you like
And beneath it were five words.
"Your real father is alive."
