Chapter 3 - The Photograph That Exposed My Husband

The bedroom door moved slowly.
I froze.
My fingers tightened around the photograph in my hand.
For a few seconds, I couldn't breathe.
Because I wasn't afraid of someone breaking in.
I was afraid of who might be standing there.
"Carter?"
No answer.
The door opened another inch.
Then Victoria stepped inside.
I immediately lowered my guard.
But only slightly.
Because the message on my phone was still glowing.
"Don't trust Victoria."
I looked at her.
She noticed my expression.
"Evelyn?"
I quickly locked my phone.
"Why are you here?"
Victoria looked confused.
"I came to check if you were okay."
I stared at her.
"At midnight?"
She hesitated.
A small hesitation.
But I noticed.
I had spent years negotiating billion-dollar deals.
I knew when someone was hiding something.
"Victoria."
Her face changed.
"What?"
"How much do you know about Carter?"
The question caught her off guard.
"What do you mean?"
I held up the photograph.
Her eyes moved toward it.
And the second she saw it...
She went completely still.
That reaction told me everything.
"You've seen this before."
Victoria slowly looked away.
"Evelyn..."
"No."
My voice became colder.
"Answer me."
She didn't speak.
I stepped closer.
"Who is in this picture?"
The photograph shook slightly in my hand.
Not because I was scared.
Because I was angry.
The picture showed Carter standing outside a hotel.
Beside him was a woman.
A woman I had never met.
But there was something else.
Something worse.
The date.
The picture was taken three months before my wedding.
Three months before Carter promised me I was the only person he loved.
Victoria finally sighed.
"I was hoping you would never find that."
My stomach tightened.
"Find what?"
She looked at me.
"The truth about how Carter entered your life."
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria closed the bedroom door behind her.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Carter didn't meet you by accident."
The room suddenly felt colder.
I laughed quietly.
"No."
I shook my head.
"Don't do this."
"Evelyn."
"No."
I looked at the picture again.
"I refuse to believe everything was fake."
Victoria's expression softened.
"I know that's difficult."
"Difficult?"
I looked at her.
"My husband just tried to take my home from me."
I pointed toward the door.
"My mother-in-law attacked me."
I held up the photograph.
"And now you're telling me the entire relationship was planned?"
Victoria didn't answer.
And that silence hurt more than words.
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
For years, I had believed Carter was the one person who saw me.
Not my money.
Not my company.
Me.
I remembered the first time we met.
A small coffee shop.
He spilled coffee on his own shirt because he was too nervous to talk to me.
He laughed.
I laughed.
It felt real.
Everything felt real.
Until tonight.
"Who is she?"
I asked.
Victoria looked at the photograph.
"Her name is Rachel Morgan."
The name meant nothing.
Until Victoria continued.
"She was Carter's business partner."
I frowned.
"Business partner?"
"Before you met him."
I looked up.
"What happened?"
Victoria walked toward the window.
"Carter's first company failed."
I remained silent.
"He lost everything."
I looked at the photograph again.
"And Rachel?"
Victoria hesitated.
"She disappeared after accusing Carter of stealing money from their company."
My eyes narrowed.
"Accusing?"
"Yes."
"Did he steal from her?"
Victoria looked at me.
"I don't know."
That answer surprised me.
Victoria always knew everything.
"You don't know?"
"No."
She sat across from me.
"Because the records disappeared."
A strange feeling moved through me.
"What records?"
"The financial records from the company."
I looked down.
"The same company that failed before he met me?"
Victoria nodded.
I stood up slowly.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't think it mattered."
I looked at her.
"And now?"
She looked toward the photograph.
"Now I think everything matters."
The silence between us grew heavier.
Then I remembered the message.
I unlocked my phone.
Victoria saw it.
Her face changed.
"You received that?"
"Yes."
"From who?"
"I don't know."
She looked genuinely worried.
Not guilty.
Worried.
But I couldn't ignore what I had seen.
"You understand why I don't know who to trust right now."
Victoria nodded.
"I do."
She stood.
"Then trust evidence."
She reached into her bag.
And placed another folder on the bed.
"What is this?"
"Something I should have shown you earlier."
I opened it.
Inside were financial documents.
Bank transfers.
Contracts.
Emails.
My eyes moved across the pages.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Carter Vale.
But not only Carter.
Another name.
Beatrice Vale.
My mother-in-law.
I looked at Victoria.
"They were planning this together."
Victoria nodded.
"For months."
I turned another page.
A transfer request.
A hidden account.
A plan to move assets.
My hands tightened around the paper.
"They wanted my money."
Victoria didn't correct me.
Because we both knew.
They did.
I walked downstairs thirty minutes later.
Carter and Beatrice were still in the living room.
But now they looked different.
They looked like people who had lost control.
Carter stood when he saw me.
"Evelyn."
I ignored him.
I placed the documents on the table.
His expression changed.
"What is this?"
"You tell me."
Beatrice picked up the papers.
Her face slowly changed.
"Carter..."
He looked at her.
And for the first time...
I saw fear between them.
Not anger.
Fear.
"You searched my accounts?"
I asked.
Neither answered.
I smiled.
"Interesting."
Carter stepped forward.
"You don't understand."
"No."
I interrupted.
"I understand perfectly."
He lowered his voice.
"Evelyn, listen to me."
I looked at him.
"No."
The word surprised him.
Because I had never spoken to him like that.
Not once.
"You spent years making me believe I was your partner."
I pointed at the documents.
"But I was just your solution."
His face tightened.
"That's not true."
"Then explain."
Silence.
That was all I needed.
Beatrice suddenly stood.
"You need to calm down."
I looked at her.
"Calm down?"
My voice remained quiet.
"That is what you tell someone after you hurt them?"
Her expression hardened.
"You are making a mistake."
I almost smiled.
"No."
I looked around the mansion.
"My mistake was trusting you."
Carter stepped closer.
"Evelyn, whatever you think you found, we can fix this."
I stared at him.
"Fix this?"
He nodded.
"We can start over."
For a moment...
I almost believed he believed his own words.
Then I saw the truth.
He wasn't sorry.
He was afraid.
Afraid of losing the lifestyle I provided.
"You don't want me back."
I whispered.
"You want access."
His face changed.
And that was my answer.
I turned away.
"Get out."
The room went silent.
Beatrice laughed.
"You can't throw us out."
I stopped.
Slowly turned around.
"Why?"
"Because Carter is your husband."
I looked at her.
"And?"
She smiled.
"You think a piece of paper makes you untouchable?"
I stared at her.
Then I remembered something.
The emergency documents.
The legal protection.
The ownership records.
I reached for my phone.
"Victoria."
A few seconds later, she answered.
"Yes, Evelyn?"
I looked directly at Carter and Beatrice.
"Send the final documents."
Carter's face changed.
"What final documents?"
I didn't answer.
Because suddenly...
Someone knocked on the front door.
Not a normal knock.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone turned.
Beatrice looked nervous.
Carter looked confused.
I walked toward the entrance.
But before I reached the door...
My phone received another message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"You don't know who owns the mansion."
I stopped.
My hand moved toward the door handle.
And then I heard a voice from the other side.
"Evelyn..."
My blood froze.
May you like
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
