Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

The voice came from behind the front door.
"Evelyn..."
My entire body froze.
I hadn't heard that voice in years.
Not in person.
Not in a recording.
Not even in my memories.
But I knew it.
Some voices are impossible to forget.
Especially the ones connected to the moments that changed your life forever.
Carter looked at me.
"What is wrong?"
I didn't answer.
Beatrice frowned.
"Who is outside?"
I slowly reached for the door handle.
My fingers felt cold.
The voice came again.
"Evelyn, please."
My heart started beating faster.
Because the person standing outside wasn't supposed to exist anymore.
I opened the door.
And the world stopped.
A woman stood on the other side.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
But unmistakable.
Rachel Morgan.
The woman from the photograph.
The woman Carter claimed had disappeared.
The woman everyone believed had left the country after her company collapsed.
She looked directly at me.
Then she whispered:
"I'm sorry it took me this long to find you."
I couldn't speak.
Behind me, Carter suddenly stopped breathing.
Because he knew exactly who she was.
Rachel looked past me.
Her eyes landed on him.
And the fear on Carter's face told me everything.
"You knew she was alive."
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Carter stepped backward.
"Evelyn..."
"No."
I looked at him.
"Don't explain."
Rachel walked inside slowly.
Victoria, who had just come down the stairs, immediately recognized her.
Her face changed.
"Rachel?"
Rachel nodded.
"It's been a long time."
Victoria looked shocked.
"Everyone thought you were gone."
Rachel gave a small, bitter smile.
"That's what Carter wanted everyone to believe."
The room became silent.
Carter finally found his voice.
"This is insane."
Rachel turned toward him.
"Is it?"
Her eyes were filled with years of anger.
"Or is it finally the truth?"
I looked between them.
I felt like I was standing in the middle of a story where everyone had been given pages except me.
"Someone needs to explain."
My voice cut through the room.
Rachel looked at me.
And I saw something in her expression.
Not jealousy.
Not hatred.
Regret.
"I owe you the truth."
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
"Evelyn Hart."
I stared.
"Why do you have something with my name?"
Rachel looked at Carter.
"Because I was trying to warn you before he found another way to take everything from you."
Carter stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her."
Rachel laughed quietly.
"You still do that."
"Do what?"
"Act like you are the victim."
Carter's face darkened.
"Leave."
Rachel ignored him.
She handed me the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a document.
I unfolded it.
And my hands immediately tightened.
It was a contract.
A marriage agreement.
But not mine.
Carter's.
Before he met me.
I looked at the signature.
Carter Vale.
And below it...
A second signature.
Beatrice Vale.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because one sentence changed everything.
"Future spouse acquisition plan."
I looked up.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Carter.
"What is this?"
His silence was enough.
Rachel stepped closer.
"Before Carter met you, he was drowning."
Carter shook his head.
"That's not true."
Rachel continued.
"He had debt. Failed investments. Lawsuits."
She looked at me.
"And then he found out about you."
My stomach dropped.
"No."
Rachel nodded sadly.
"Yes."
I looked at Carter.
"You knew who I was?"
He didn't respond.
That hurt more than any confession.
Because I already knew.
"You knew."
My voice cracked.
Carter finally spoke.
"Evelyn, it wasn't like that."
"Then what was it like?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Rachel answered for him.
"He researched you."
The room became completely silent.
"He knew your family's history. He knew your company. He knew your inheritance."
Every word felt heavier.
"He knew exactly who you were before he approached you."
I looked at Carter.
The memories started replaying.
The coffee shop.
The first conversation.
The way he somehow knew what I liked.
The way he always appeared exactly when I needed someone.
I had called it fate.
Maybe it was never fate.
Maybe it was strategy.
"No."
I whispered.
Carter moved toward me.
"Evelyn, please."
I stepped back.
"Don't."
My voice was stronger now.
"Don't say my name like you still have the right."
His expression changed.
For the first time...
He looked ashamed.
But then Beatrice interrupted.
"This is ridiculous."
Everyone looked at her.
She stood near the fireplace.
"You are allowing this woman to manipulate you."
Rachel looked at her.
"You haven't changed."
Beatrice smiled coldly.
"And you haven't learned."
Victoria immediately noticed something.
"What does that mean?"
Beatrice didn't answer.
I looked at her.
"What did you do to Rachel?"
Beatrice's expression remained calm.
Too calm.
"Nothing."
Rachel laughed.
"Tell her what happened after you discovered I had evidence."
The room went quiet.
My eyes moved to Rachel.
"What evidence?"
Rachel looked at Carter.
"The evidence that proved he transferred company money into personal accounts."
Carter's face changed.
"Stop."
Rachel continued.
"The evidence that could have sent him to prison."
I stared at Carter.
"Is that true?"
He looked away.
That was another answer.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of the money.
Not because of the mansion.
Because every memory I had built with him now had a shadow over it.
Rachel reached into her bag again.
This time, she removed a small USB drive.
"I saved everything."
Carter immediately reacted.
"Give that to me."
His sudden movement made everyone freeze.
Rachel stepped back.
And Victoria moved between them.
"Carter."
Her voice was cold.
"Don't."
He stopped.
But I noticed something.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
I looked at the USB drive.
"What is on it?"
Rachel looked at me.
"The truth."
She placed it in my hand.
"The reason your father never trusted Carter."
My breathing stopped.
"My father?"
Rachel nodded.
"Your father knew something before he died."
I stared at her.
"What?"
Rachel lowered her voice.
"He knew Carter was dangerous."
The room became silent.
I looked at the USB drive.
My father.
Carter.
The secret marriage plan.
The hidden documents.
Everything connected.
Then my phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Only breathing.
Then a man's voice whispered:
"Evelyn..."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice too.
My father's voice.
Impossible.
My hand started shaking.
The voice continued.
"If you are hearing this, it means Carter failed to stop you."
Carter's face turned pale.
Victoria looked at me.
Rachel covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
"Do not trust the people standing beside you."
I slowly looked around the room.
At Carter.
At Beatrice.
At Victoria.
Then the voice said the words that made my blood run cold.
"The person who betrayed you first is not who you think..."
The call suddenly ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the USB drive in my hand lit up.
A new file appeared on the screen.
Created today.
May you like
The file name was:
"THE PERSON WHO REALLY OWNS THE MANSION."
