Chapter 6 - The Secret My Mother Took To Her Grave

The photograph fell onto the marble table.

Nobody moved.

I stared at it.

A part of me already knew I didn't want to pick it up.

Because sometimes the truth is not something you discover.

Sometimes it is something you are forced to face.

My fingers slowly reached toward the photograph.

Carter watched me carefully.

Too carefully.

Like he already knew what I was about to see.

I picked it up.

And my entire body froze.

The picture was old.

The edges were worn.

But the people in it were clear.

My mother.

My father.

And a third person standing beside them.

Carter.

Not the Carter I married.

A younger version.

Standing outside the same mansion.

The same mansion he claimed he had never seen before meeting me.

I looked up.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

I turned the photograph around.

There was handwriting on the back.

My mother's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

"Edward knows the truth."

My heart stopped.

Edward.

My father's closest friend.

A man who disappeared from our lives shortly after my mother's death.

I looked at Carter.

"You knew my family before we met."

He didn't deny it.

That hurt more than a lie.

Because denial would have meant he was still trying to hide.

But silence meant he knew he had been caught.

"Answer me."

Carter looked exhausted.

"I was young."

I laughed.

A quiet, painful laugh.

"That's your explanation?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

My voice became sharper.

"Because right now, I am standing in my own house, surrounded by people who knew things about my life that I didn't."

Nobody spoke.

Rachel stepped closer.

"Evelyn, there is more."

I looked at her.

"More?"

She nodded.

"The reason Carter knew your father wasn't because of business."

I looked back at Carter.

"Then why?"

Rachel took a deep breath.

"Because your father was investigating him."

The room went silent again.

I felt like every answer created another question.

"What was my father investigating?"

Rachel looked at Carter.

Then at me.

"The company he lost."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with my father?"

Rachel's eyes lowered.

"Everything."

She walked toward the table.

"When my company collapsed, everyone blamed me."

She looked at Carter.

"But I knew something was wrong."

Carter's expression hardened.

"Rachel, stop."

"No."

Her voice was stronger.

"You destroyed my company."

Everyone froze.

Carter shook his head.

"That's not true."

Rachel looked at me.

"He convinced investors to leave me."

I stared.

"He sabotaged his own partner?"

Rachel nodded.

"Because he needed a reason to start over."

Victoria looked at Carter.

"You rebuilt your reputation after that."

Carter didn't answer.

Rachel continued.

"And then he found Evelyn."

I felt sick.

Because suddenly the timeline made sense.

The failed company.

The debt.

The perfect timing.

The marriage.

The mansion.

Everything.

"You chose me."

My voice was quiet.

Carter looked at me.

"I loved you."

The words almost hurt more.

Because I wanted to believe them.

I wanted one thing from this entire nightmare to be real.

But then I remembered tonight.

The documents.

The threats.

The way he stood beside his mother.

Love didn't look like that.

"You loved what I could give you."

His expression changed.

"Evelyn."

"No."

I stepped back.

"You don't get to explain this away."

Beatrice suddenly spoke.

"You are being manipulated."

I turned toward her.

She looked angry.

But not because I was wrong.

Because she was losing control.

"By who?"

I asked.

"Rachel?"

I pointed toward the photograph.

"Or Carter?"

She didn't answer.

I walked closer.

"You knew."

Beatrice's eyes narrowed.

"Knew what?"

"Everything."

The silence confirmed it.

"You knew who he was before I married him."

She looked away.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

The woman who pretended to welcome me into her family.

The woman who called me daughter.

She knew.

All of them knew.

Except me.

Victoria picked up the photograph.

"There is something strange."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She examined the back.

"The handwriting."

"What about it?"

She pointed.

"Your mother wrote this after she supposedly died."

The room froze.

I stared.

"What?"

Victoria turned the photograph toward me.

The date was written below the message.

My mother's death date.

The exact day.

My breathing stopped.

"That is impossible."

Rachel looked nervous.

"That's why your father hid the recording."

I looked at the USB drive.

My father's final message.

My mother's handwriting.

Carter's connection to my past.

Nothing made sense.

Then the laptop suddenly turned on by itself.

Everyone turned.

The screen showed a new file.

Not the video.

A hidden folder.

Password required.

The title appeared:

"FOR EVELYN'S EYES ONLY."

I stepped closer.

Victoria followed.

"Did you create this?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Carter stared at the screen.

And for the first time...

He looked genuinely terrified.

"Where did that come from?"

I turned toward him.

"You tell me."

He didn't respond.

Rachel whispered:

"He knows."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

Rachel looked at Carter.

"You always knew there was another file."

Carter's face changed.

"Don't."

Rachel continued.

"You were looking for this."

My heart sank.

"Carter."

He looked at me.

And then he said something I never expected.

"I wasn't trying to steal your mansion."

The room became silent.

"Then what were you trying to do?"

He looked at the screen.

"I was trying to find out what your father hid from you."

I stared.

"Why?"

His expression changed.

Because behind all the lies...

There was something else.

Fear.

"Because your father didn't die naturally."

Nobody moved.

My voice disappeared.

"What did you say?"

Carter swallowed.

"Your father was investigating someone."

"Who?"

He looked at me.

And before he could answer...

The mansion lights suddenly turned off.

Complete darkness.

Someone screamed downstairs.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A slow footstep.

Coming closer.

My phone vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

Only four words appeared.

"Your mother is alive."

May you like

The footsteps stopped outside the room.

Then the bedroom door handle slowly began to turn...
