Chapter 9 - The Last Call Before Midnight

"That's impossible. I watched you die."
Richard Vale staggered backward as the man stepped out of the underground elevator.
Thomas Cross smiled.
"People keep saying that to me."
He looked older than he did in the photograph. His dark hair had turned gray at the temples, and a thin scar crossed his chin. But there was no mistaking his face.
Evelyn's supposedly dead husband.
The former head of security for the Vale family.
The man whose disappearance had helped destroy two families.
And he was holding the original trust document.
Olivia looked at Evelyn.
"You said he was dead."
Evelyn smiled.
"I've said many things."
Ryan immediately moved in front of his sister.
Thomas noticed.
"Still playing the protective older brother?"
Ryan glared at him.
"Stay away from her."
Thomas laughed.
"Your family has always been remarkably dramatic."
Richard stepped forward.
"Where have you been?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Building the empire you were too frightened to control."
He placed the trust document on the metal table.
Then he looked directly at Olivia.
"Hello, Olivia. I've been waiting twenty-seven years to meet you properly."
Olivia didn't recognize Thomas Cross.
But something about his voice disturbed her.
She had heard it before.
Not in person.
On the telephone.
During the months when Felix had been following her, an unfamiliar man had occasionally called her apartment.
He never identified himself.
He always asked the same question.
Did your mother leave you anything?
Olivia stared at Thomas.
"You were the one calling me."
He smiled.
"Very good."
"You threatened me."
"I asked questions."
"You told me I'd disappear if I didn't cooperate."
Thomas shrugged.
"An unfortunate choice of words."
Olivia felt her fear turning into anger.
"You ruined my life."
Thomas examined her.
"No, Olivia. Your family ruined your life. I simply benefited from their mistakes."
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
"Enough!"
Thomas turned.
"Careful, Richard. You're standing on property I control."
Richard looked toward the warehouse doors.
"Police are outside."
Thomas smiled.
"Then perhaps we should give them something interesting to investigate."
He opened the trust document.
Olivia noticed several signatures.
Richard Vale.
Daniel Marshall.
Margaret Marshall.
And one more.
Thomas Cross.
Thomas tapped the page.
"This document establishes the ownership of Northbridge Holdings and its associated properties."
Ryan frowned.
"Those properties were purchased with stolen money."
Thomas nodded approvingly.
"Exactly."
Olivia stared.
"You're admitting it?"
"Of course. The question is who the documents say stole it."
He turned the page.
Olivia's name appeared beneath a section labeled Beneficial Owner.
Her stomach dropped.
"What is that?"
Thomas smiled.
"Your inheritance."
Richard went pale.
"No."
Thomas looked at him.
"Oh, yes."
He pushed the document toward Olivia.
"Congratulations. According to these records, you've owned the entire operation since your eighteenth birthday."
Outside the shipping terminal, Adrian stared at the underground security plans on Marcus's tablet.
"How many entrances?"
"Three. The main warehouse, a service tunnel, and a loading passage connected to the river."
Adrian pointed toward the loading passage.
"Can we get through there?"
Marcus shook his head.
"Electronic locks. Someone activated the emergency system."
Adrian looked toward the police vehicles.
Officers were establishing a perimeter.
Every minute felt unbearable.
Olivia was inside with Ryan, Richard, Evelyn, and a man Adrian had spent years believing was dead.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Olivia.
I'm inside. Ryan is alive. Thomas Cross is here.
Adrian immediately typed:
Don't sign anything. Police are outside.
Three dots appeared.
Then another message arrived.
He says I own everything.
Adrian's expression changed.
He looked toward Marcus.
"Get my father's attorney on the phone."
Marcus frowned.
"Samuel Bennett?"
"Now."
Samuel Bennett had handled Richard Vale's estate for more than twenty years.
He had also been the attorney who established Olivia's trust.
Adrian had never understood why his father insisted on keeping certain documents outside the family business.
Now he was beginning to suspect the reason.
His phone rang.
"Adrian?"
"Samuel. I need to know everything about Olivia Marshall's trust."
A long silence.
Then Samuel spoke.
"Where are you?"
"At the Northbridge shipping terminal."
Samuel's voice changed.
"Get away from that building."
Adrian stopped.
"Why?"
"Because the original trust was never supposed to be opened there."
Inside the warehouse, Olivia stared at the documents.
Her name appeared everywhere.
Property transfers.
Financial accounts.
Company registrations.
Transactions involving millions of dollars.
All supposedly authorized by her.
"This is impossible," she whispered.
Thomas smiled.
"Is it?"
"I never signed any of this."
"Your signature appears on every document."
Olivia looked closer.
The signatures resembled her handwriting.
But they weren't hers.
She remembered Victoria.
The woman who had impersonated Amelia.
The woman who had stolen the silver key.
The woman who had spent years learning how to imitate her.
Olivia slowly looked toward Evelyn.
"Victoria signed these."
Evelyn's expression changed.
Thomas stopped smiling.
Ryan leaned forward.
"What?"
Olivia pointed toward the documents.
"Victoria has been impersonating me. She's been practicing my signature. You used her to transfer everything into my name."
Thomas studied her.
Then he laughed.
"You're more intelligent than Felix suggested."
Olivia felt sick.
"Why?"
Thomas folded his arms.
"Because someone has to take responsibility when the authorities discover the missing money."
Ryan stepped forward.
"You were planning to frame her."
Thomas smiled.
"Planning?"
He checked his watch.
"It's already done."
Adrian listened as Samuel Bennett explained the truth.
"Your father created two separate trusts," the attorney said. "The first was the legitimate inheritance intended for Olivia Marshall. The second was a collection of financial records designed to expose Northbridge Holdings."
Adrian stared toward the warehouse.
"Why Olivia?"
"Because Daniel Marshall was the original whistleblower. Richard wanted his daughter to have financial protection if anything happened to him."
Adrian felt relief and anger collide.
His father had known Olivia wasn't his biological child.
He had protected her anyway.
"And the original documents?"
Samuel hesitated.
"Stored beneath the terminal."
"Thomas Cross has them."
A sharp intake of breath.
"Thomas is alive?"
"Apparently."
Samuel went silent.
Then he said something Adrian would never forget.
"Adrian, listen carefully. Thomas doesn't have the original trust."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"He has a counterfeit."
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
"How do you know?"
"Because I have the original."
At the Lincoln Park house, Margaret Marshall stood beside the fireplace.
Amelia sat on the sofa.
Neither had spoken for several minutes.
Then Margaret's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Evelyn?"
A familiar voice replied.
"Hello, sister."
Margaret went pale.
"Where are you?"
"Finishing what you were too weak to finish."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Please don't hurt Olivia."
Evelyn laughed softly.
"Still choosing her over Amelia?"
Margaret's expression hardened.
"I love both my daughters."
"Then why did you let one of them disappear?"
Margaret began crying.
"You took Amelia from me."
Evelyn's voice changed.
"I saved her."
"You kidnapped her!"
A long silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Ask Amelia what happened the night Richard Vale supposedly died."
Margaret slowly turned.
Amelia was watching her.
"What?"
Evelyn continued.
"Ask her why she was there."
The call ended.
Margaret lowered the phone.
Amelia stood.
"Mom?"
Margaret stared at her daughter.
"Amelia. What happened eight years ago?"
Amelia's face drained of color.
Inside the warehouse, Thomas Cross placed a pen beside the counterfeit trust document.
"Sign."
Olivia stared at him.
"No."
Thomas smiled.
"You don't understand your position."
"I understand perfectly. You want me to take responsibility for your crimes."
Thomas looked toward Evelyn.
She approached Ryan.
Olivia immediately stepped forward.
"Don't touch him!"
Evelyn stopped.
"Then sign."
Ryan shook his head.
"Olivia, don't."
Thomas leaned closer.
"Your brother has always been your weakness."
Olivia stared at him.
Then she looked toward the warehouse ceiling.
A security camera blinked.
She remembered Adrian's message.
Police are outside.
She also remembered the location-sharing application still running on her phone.
If she could keep Thomas talking, Adrian might find a way inside.
"Before I sign," she said, "I want to know something."
Thomas raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"Why did you fake Richard's death?"
Richard looked toward her.
Thomas smiled.
"Because Richard wanted to confess."
Evelyn turned sharply.
"Thomas."
He ignored her.
"Eight years ago, Richard discovered the extent of our financial operation. He threatened to expose everything."
Richard's face darkened.
"You threatened Adrian."
Thomas shrugged.
"An effective negotiating strategy."
Olivia stared at Richard.
"You let your son bury an empty coffin?"
Richard's eyes filled.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Thomas promised he'd kill Adrian if I contacted him."
Olivia felt a terrible sadness.
Another father.
Another terrible choice.
Another child forced to suffer because adults believed secrets could protect the people they loved.
She turned toward Thomas.
"And Daniel?"
Thomas smiled.
"Daniel was considerably more difficult."
Richard stepped forward.
"You tried to kill him."
Thomas nodded.
"Unfortunately, he survived."
Ryan stared.
"You admit it?"
Thomas looked amused.
"Why not? By midnight, the police will have all the evidence they need."
Olivia's stomach tightened.
"Evidence against whom?"
Thomas smiled.
"Against you."
Adrian stood beside a police command vehicle.
Samuel Bennett had arrived with a black briefcase.
He opened it.
Inside were the original trust documents.
A digital storage device.
And a sealed envelope bearing Richard Vale's signature.
Adrian stared.
"My father gave you these?"
Samuel nodded.
"Eight years ago."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because he instructed me to release them only when Olivia Marshall was in immediate danger."
Adrian felt anger rising.
"She's been in danger for years!"
Samuel lowered his head.
"I know."
Adrian took the storage device.
"What's on this?"
"Financial records. Recorded conversations. Evidence of the forged transfers."
Marcus leaned forward.
"Can we access it?"
Samuel nodded.
"The password is Olivia's birthday."
Adrian looked at him.
"Of course it is."
Marcus connected the device to his laptop.
Several folders appeared.
Northbridge Holdings.
Cross Family Accounts.
Marshall Trust.
And one folder labeled:
RICHARD VALE — FINAL CONFESSION.
Adrian stared.
Then he opened it.
A video began playing.
Richard appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
"Adrian, if you're watching this, then I've failed to stop Thomas Cross."
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
Richard continued.
"I know you believe I died. I know what that did to you. And I know you may never forgive me."
Adrian looked away.
Then his father said something unexpected.
"But the most important thing I need to tell you is this: Olivia Marshall is innocent."
Adrian looked back.
Richard held up a document.
"The financial records have been altered to make her appear responsible. Thomas intends to use her inheritance as a way to conceal his crimes."
The video continued.
"And there is one person who can prove everything."
Adrian leaned forward.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"Victoria Cross."
At the bank, Victoria Cross sat alone inside an interview room.
Felix had been arrested.
The police were questioning him about the forged trust authorization.
Victoria had managed to escape the building through a service corridor.
But she hadn't gone far.
Instead, she'd walked into another police station.
And asked to speak with a detective.
Now she sat across from Detective Elena Brooks.
"I want immunity," Victoria said.
The detective folded her arms.
"That depends on what you can tell us."
Victoria placed a flash drive on the table.
"Everything."
Brooks examined it.
"What's on this?"
"Copies of every forged document my mother and Thomas Cross ever created."
The detective leaned forward.
"And why should I believe you?"
Victoria looked down.
"Because they were planning to kill my cousin."
"Which cousin?"
"Olivia Marshall."
Brooks stared.
Victoria continued.
"And because I helped them."
Inside the warehouse, Evelyn received a message.
She glanced at her phone.
Her expression changed.
Thomas noticed.
"What?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"Nothing."
He approached.
"Evelyn."
She looked up.
"Victoria went to the police."
Thomas went completely still.
Then he laughed.
"Your daughter?"
Evelyn nodded.
"She's cooperating."
Thomas stared at her.
For the first time, Olivia saw genuine fear cross his face.
"How much does she know?" he demanded.
Evelyn hesitated.
"Everything."
Thomas slammed his hand against the table.
Ryan immediately moved closer to Olivia.
Richard looked toward the warehouse entrance.
And Olivia realized something.
Their captors were losing control.
Then Thomas reached into his coat.
He removed a small black device.
The same kind Evelyn had used to seal the warehouse.
Olivia stared.
"What is that?"
Thomas smiled.
"Insurance."
He pressed a button.
A loud mechanical sound echoed beneath the floor.
Richard went pale.
"Thomas, don't."
Thomas ignored him.
The warehouse lights flickered.
Then a recorded announcement filled the building.
"Emergency containment procedure activated."
Olivia looked toward the exits.
Heavy steel doors began descending.
Ryan grabbed her hand.
"We need to move!"
Thomas smiled.
"Nobody's leaving."
Outside, Marcus's laptop suddenly displayed a warning.
"Adrian!"
Adrian turned.
"What?"
"The underground security system has activated a containment sequence."
Samuel Bennett went pale.
"That's impossible."
Marcus stared at the screen.
"The building's emergency systems are connected to the underground archive."
Adrian looked toward the warehouse.
"What does that mean?"
Samuel swallowed.
"It means Thomas has activated the destruction protocol."
Adrian felt his blood turn cold.
"Destruction?"
Samuel nodded.
"The archive was designed to destroy sensitive documents if unauthorized access was detected."
Marcus checked another screen.
"Adrian, the system is also shutting down ventilation."
Adrian stared toward the building.
Olivia was inside.
Ryan was inside.
His father was inside.
And Thomas Cross had just turned the entire terminal into a trap.
Olivia grabbed Ryan's hand.
They ran toward the service corridor.
Richard followed.
Evelyn stood beside the table, staring at Thomas.
"You said nobody would get hurt!"
Thomas laughed.
"You really should stop believing me."
He moved toward the underground elevator.
Olivia turned.
"Where are you going?"
Thomas smiled.
"Somewhere safe."
Richard lunged toward him.
Thomas shoved him backward.
Richard crashed against the table.
Ryan immediately helped him stand.
Olivia looked toward Evelyn.
"Stop him!"
Evelyn hesitated.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Then Thomas entered the elevator.
The doors began closing.
Evelyn suddenly ran toward him.
"THOMAS!"
He smiled.
"Goodbye, Evelyn."
The doors shut.
The elevator descended.
And Evelyn Cross realized her husband had abandoned her.
Outside, Adrian received a call from Detective Elena Brooks.
"We have Victoria Cross in custody."
Adrian immediately straightened.
"Is she cooperating?"
"Yes. She gave us evidence against Thomas and Evelyn Cross."
"Good. I need the warehouse emergency codes."
Brooks hesitated.
"Victoria says there's something you should know."
Adrian looked toward the terminal.
"What?"
"Thomas has a second exit beneath the river."
Marcus immediately checked the building plans.
"Found it."
Adrian turned.
"Where?"
"A maintenance tunnel connected to an old drainage system."
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Let's go."
Marcus stepped in front of him.
"Adrian, the police are preparing a rescue operation."
"Olivia doesn't have time."
Marcus stared at him.
Then nodded.
"Then I'm coming with you."
Inside the warehouse, Olivia helped Richard toward the service corridor.
Ryan pulled at the emergency door.
Locked.
Evelyn approached.
"I know another way."
Olivia turned.
"Why should we trust you?"
Evelyn looked toward the underground elevator.
"Because Thomas just left me here to die."
Ryan stared.
"That doesn't make you innocent."
"I know."
Olivia studied her.
For once, Evelyn wasn't smiling.
She looked frightened.
Human.
And utterly defeated.
"Show us," Olivia said.
Evelyn led them toward a maintenance hatch behind the loading equipment.
She entered a code.
The hatch unlocked.
Ryan pulled it open.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Olivia stared.
"Where does it go?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"Underneath the river."
Richard stepped forward.
"Thomas will use the same tunnel."
Evelyn shook her head.
"No. He has a private route."
Olivia looked at her.
"Then we need to hurry."
They descended.
Behind them, the warehouse lights went out.
Adrian and Marcus reached the drainage tunnel with two police officers.
The entrance was concealed behind an abandoned maintenance building.
Marcus forced open the rusted gate.
Cold air rushed out.
Adrian switched on his flashlight.
"Olivia!"
His voice echoed through the darkness.
No answer.
They moved deeper.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
Their footsteps splashed through shallow puddles.
Then Adrian heard something.
A woman's voice.
"ADRIAN!"
He stopped.
"OLIVIA?"
"DOWN HERE!"
He ran.
Marcus followed.
They rounded a corner.
And there she was.
Olivia.
Standing beside Ryan.
Alive.
Adrian stopped so suddenly Marcus nearly collided with him.
For a moment, neither Adrian nor Olivia moved.
Then she ran toward him.
He caught her in his arms.
She buried her face against his chest.
"I thought I was going to die."
Adrian held her tightly.
"You're safe."
She pulled backward.
"Not yet."
He looked at her.
"What?"
"Thomas escaped."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Where?"
Evelyn appeared behind Olivia.
"Through the private tunnel."
Marcus immediately raised his radio.
"Suspect heading toward the river exit."
Adrian looked toward the darkness.
Then Olivia grabbed his hand.
"There's something else."
He turned.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"Richard told me the truth."
Adrian went still.
"The DNA results?"
She nodded.
"Daniel is my father."
For several seconds, Adrian couldn't speak.
Then he slowly exhaled.
Olivia looked at him.
"I know this doesn't change everything."
He shook his head.
"No."
She waited.
Adrian gently brushed a strand of wet hair away from her face.
"But it changes one very important thing."
Before she could respond, Marcus shouted.
"Adrian! We have movement!"
Thomas Cross emerged from the private tunnel carrying a black briefcase.
He expected to find a waiting vehicle.
Instead, he found three police officers.
"Thomas Cross!" one shouted. "Put down the briefcase!"
Thomas froze.
Then slowly raised his hands.
For the first time in his life, the man who had controlled everyone else's secrets had nowhere left to run.
But he wasn't finished.
He looked toward the tunnel.
And smiled.
"You think you've won?"
The officer stepped forward.
"On your knees."
Thomas laughed.
"Then you haven't seen the final document."
He reached toward his coat.
The officers immediately shouted.
"SHOW YOUR HANDS!"
Thomas stopped.
Then he slowly removed an envelope.
He held it above his head.
"Tell Adrian Vale that if he wants the truth about his mother, he'd better read this."
Adrian stood beside Olivia as police officers escorted the survivors toward the waiting ambulances.
Ryan was exhausted but alive.
Richard had suffered a minor injury.
Evelyn was being taken into custody.
And Thomas Cross had finally been arrested.
For the first time, Olivia allowed herself to believe the nightmare might be ending.
Then an officer approached Adrian.
"Mr. Vale?"
Adrian turned.
"What?"
"Thomas Cross asked us to give you this."
The officer handed him a sealed envelope.
Adrian stared at it.
His name was written across the front.
Beneath it were three words.
FROM YOUR MOTHER.
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
His mother had died when he was nine.
He slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby.
And a woman lying in bed.
Adrian recognized her immediately.
His mother.
But she wasn't holding him.
She was holding another child.
Adrian turned the photograph over.
A date had been written in faded blue ink.
October 17.
Olivia's birthday.
He stared.
Then he noticed a second envelope tucked behind the photograph.
It contained a handwritten letter.
The first sentence made his blood run cold.
Adrian, the woman you buried was not your mother.
He looked toward Richard.
His father had gone completely pale.
Adrian slowly unfolded the rest of the letter.
Then he saw a name.
A name he had never expected to read.
He turned toward Olivia.
"There's someone we need to find."
Before she could answer, Marcus rushed toward them.
"Adrian! There's a woman asking for you."
Adrian stared.
"Who?"
Marcus looked toward the ambulance.
"She says she's your mother."
Adrian stopped breathing.
Then the ambulance door slowly opened.
A woman stepped out.
She looked directly at him.
May you like
And whispered:
"Adrian, don't trust your father. He knows what happened to your real mother."
