Chapter 7 - The Night Chicago Turned Against Him

"Son. Open the door."
Adrian Vale stared at the security monitor.
The gray-haired man standing outside his house had his father's face.
His father's eyes.
Even his father's voice.
But Richard Vale had been dead for eight years.
Adrian had identified his body. He had attended the funeral. He had watched the coffin disappear into the ground.
And now that same man was standing outside, asking to be let inside.
"Don't open it," Olivia whispered.
Adrian didn't move.
The man raised his head toward the camera.
"Adrian, I know you're watching."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Sir, we need to identify him before anyone approaches that door."
Adrian looked at the screen.
"Ask him about the lake."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"Ask him what happened at the lake when I was twelve."
Marcus activated the intercom.
"Mr. Vale wants to know what happened at the lake."
The man outside smiled.
"He fell through the ice. I pulled him out. He spent three days in the hospital."
Adrian's face went pale.
Olivia looked at him.
"Is that true?"
He nodded.
But then the man continued.
"And afterward, his mother made him promise never to go skating again."
Adrian stepped backward.
"That's wrong."
Olivia turned.
"What?"
"My mother died when I was nine."
The man outside stopped smiling.
Adrian leaned toward the intercom.
"Who are you?"
For several seconds, the stranger remained silent.
Then he raised both hands.
"Someone who can tell you where your real father is buried."
Marcus immediately ordered his security team to surround the property.
The man outside didn't resist.
He calmly allowed two guards to escort him through the front gate.
Adrian waited in the entrance hall.
Olivia stood beside him, still holding the photograph Amelia had given her.
Margaret remained in the living room with Amelia.
Nobody had forgotten that Victoria Cross was still missing.
Nobody had forgotten that Felix Kesler had somehow obtained access to Richard Vale's trust account.
And nobody had forgotten Ryan.
Olivia's brother was still being held somewhere in Chicago.
The stranger entered the house.
Up close, the resemblance was extraordinary.
The silver hair.
The strong jaw.
The narrow scar beside his left eyebrow.
Adrian stared.
"Take off your coat."
The man complied.
Beneath it, he wore a dark blue shirt.
Adrian noticed something immediately.
His father had suffered a serious injury to his right shoulder during a skiing accident. The scar had been unmistakable.
This man had no scar.
"You're not my father."
"No."
"Then who are you?"
The stranger looked toward Margaret.
"Ask her."
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
The moment she saw him, she stopped breathing.
"Daniel?"
Olivia's head snapped toward her.
"Dad?"
The man closed his eyes.
"Hello, Margaret."
Olivia dropped the photograph.
Daniel Marshall had been missing for fourteen years.
He had supposedly abandoned his wife and children.
Later, he had supposedly died.
Now he stood in Adrian Vale's entrance hall, wearing a disguise designed to make him look like Richard Vale.
Olivia stared at him.
She remembered a man who used to lift her onto his shoulders.
A man who made pancakes shaped like animals.
A man who promised he'd always come home.
She also remembered waiting beside the window on the night he disappeared.
"You're alive," she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
"Olivia."
She stepped backward.
"Don't."
His expression crumpled.
"I know I have no right—"
"Fourteen years."
He lowered his head.
"I know."
"Fourteen years, and you couldn't make one phone call?"
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
"I tried."
Margaret began crying.
Olivia laughed bitterly.
"Of course you did. Everybody tried. Everybody loved me. Everybody had a wonderful reason for abandoning me."
Daniel approached.
She raised her hand.
"Stay there."
He stopped immediately.
Adrian watched silently.
Then he asked the question that had been troubling him since the man arrived.
"Why are you dressed like my father?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because someone wanted you to open the door."
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Evelyn Cross."
Across Chicago, Felix Kesler was losing control.
He stood inside a private office at First Chicago Trust while Victoria argued with the bank manager.
"The documents are valid!" she snapped.
The manager remained calm.
"Miss Marshall, the authorization has been flagged."
Victoria's expression hardened.
"By whom?"
"Mr. Adrian Vale."
Felix slammed his hand against the desk.
"Then call him!"
The manager looked toward the door.
"I'm afraid that won't be necessary."
Two uniformed officers entered.
Felix went completely still.
Victoria turned.
"What's going on?"
One officer approached the desk.
"We've received a report concerning attempted financial fraud."
Felix immediately smiled.
"There's been a misunderstanding."
The officer looked at the forged authorization.
"Then perhaps you can explain why you're attempting to access a trust account using documents that appear to contain forged signatures."
Victoria stared at Felix.
He stared back.
Neither spoke.
Then Felix's phone vibrated.
A message from Evelyn.
Leave. Now.
Felix looked toward the officers.
And realized the exits were already blocked.
Back at the Lincoln Park house, Daniel sat across from Olivia.
Margaret stood near the fireplace.
Adrian remained beside the window.
Marcus had positioned two guards outside the room.
Nobody was leaving until the truth came out.
Daniel removed a folded document from his pocket.
"This is why I disappeared."
He placed it on the table.
Olivia examined it.
A financial agreement.
Several company names.
A list of offshore accounts.
And three signatures.
Daniel Marshall.
Richard Vale.
Evelyn Cross.
Olivia looked up.
"Evelyn?"
Daniel nodded.
"She was the person moving the money."
Margaret shook her head.
"No. Evelyn worked for me."
Daniel looked at her sadly.
"That's what she wanted you to believe."
Adrian picked up the document.
"My father signed this?"
"No."
Daniel pointed toward the signature.
"Evelyn forged it."
Adrian remembered the documents Ryan had discovered.
The forged signatures.
The fake financial authorizations.
The photograph of Felix meeting both their fathers.
Everything was beginning to connect.
"Why didn't you go to the police?" Adrian asked.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"I did."
"And?"
"The detective assigned to the case was Evelyn's husband."
Olivia stared.
"Evelyn was married?"
Daniel nodded.
"To a man named Thomas Cross."
Adrian's expression changed.
He recognized the name.
Thomas Cross had once been the head of security for Richard Vale's largest investment company.
Eight years earlier, he had disappeared shortly after Richard's death.
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
"Find Thomas Cross."
Marcus was already typing.
Daniel shook his head.
"You won't find him."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn killed him."
Olivia felt physically exhausted.
Every answer seemed to produce another nightmare.
She looked at her father.
"Where's Ryan?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"He's alive."
Her heart accelerated.
"Where?"
"An old shipping terminal near the river."
Marcus immediately looked up.
"Northbridge Holdings."
Daniel nodded.
"That's where Evelyn keeps the original financial records."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Then we're going."
Daniel raised his hand.
"Not yet."
Adrian stared.
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn has been waiting for you to go there."
Olivia stood.
"My brother is there!"
Daniel looked at her.
"And if you rush in, she'll use him to force you to sign away your inheritance."
Olivia froze.
"My inheritance?"
Daniel nodded.
"Richard Vale established a trust in your name because he believed you were the only person Evelyn couldn't easily control."
Adrian looked toward the document.
"Why Olivia?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then he glanced at Margaret.
"Because Richard knew the truth about her birth."
Olivia stared at him.
"What truth?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel looked directly at Olivia.
"Your mother and I raised you. We loved you. Nothing changes that."
Olivia's stomach dropped.
"But?"
Daniel swallowed.
"But Richard Vale was your biological father."
Silence.
Adrian slowly turned.
"What?"
Olivia stared at Daniel.
"No."
Margaret began crying.
"Olivia—"
"No!"
She backed toward the doorway.
Adrian remained motionless.
For the first time, Olivia understood why Richard Vale had established the trust.
Why Adrian had been connected to her family.
Why her mother had hidden so many documents.
But another realization struck her.
She turned toward Adrian.
"If Richard Vale was my father..."
Adrian's expression had gone completely blank.
Olivia whispered the words neither of them wanted to say.
"Then you're my brother."
Adrian stepped backward.
He couldn't breathe.
For weeks, he had felt something growing between himself and Olivia.
Not simply responsibility.
Not simply concern.
He had begun to admire her courage, her stubbornness, and the way she refused to surrender even when everyone around her seemed determined to control her life.
Now Daniel was telling him that Olivia was his sister.
Adrian looked toward Margaret.
"Is it true?"
She couldn't meet his eyes.
"Margaret."
Her lips trembled.
"I don't know."
Daniel turned sharply.
"What?"
Margaret covered her face.
"I never had the test done."
Olivia stared.
"WHAT?"
Margaret began crying.
"Richard believed he was your father. Daniel believed he was your father. I didn't know how to tell either of them the truth."
Adrian felt something cold settle inside him.
"Then why did Richard leave Olivia the inheritance?"
Margaret looked up.
"Because he loved her."
Olivia turned away.
She couldn't stand another second in that room.
She walked toward the garden.
Adrian didn't follow.
For once, he understood that she needed space.
Twenty minutes later, Amelia found Olivia sitting beneath the covered terrace.
Her sister was crying silently.
Amelia sat beside her.
Neither spoke for a while.
Then Olivia whispered:
"Is anything about our family real?"
Amelia reached for her hand.
"We are."
Olivia looked at her.
Amelia smiled sadly.
"Whatever those documents say, you're still my sister."
Olivia squeezed her hand.
"Do you think Daniel's telling the truth?"
"I don't know."
"Do you think Richard Vale was our father?"
Amelia hesitated.
"Mom always told me Daniel was our father."
Olivia stared at the rain.
"She told me she was dead."
Amelia had no answer.
Then Olivia's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Ryan.
He was sitting in a chair inside a warehouse.
His face was bruised, but he was conscious.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR BROTHER BACK.
Olivia's hands began shaking.
Another message arrived.
AND BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENT.
She stared at the screen.
Then she looked toward the house.
For the first time, she understood exactly what Evelyn wanted.
Not merely money.
Control.
And Olivia was the final obstacle.
Inside the house, Adrian stood beside Marcus.
"I want a complete security sweep of every property Evelyn has ever owned."
Marcus nodded.
"Already working on it."
"And contact the authorities handling the bank investigation."
"Yes, sir."
Adrian looked toward the garden.
Olivia was sitting beside Amelia.
He felt an unfamiliar ache.
He wanted to comfort her.
But until the truth about their families was established, he refused to complicate her life any further.
Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"Felix Kesler has been arrested."
Adrian turned.
"Good."
Marcus hesitated.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"Victoria Cross disappeared during the arrest."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"How?"
"She apparently left through a service corridor before the officers entered."
Adrian looked toward the garden.
Then he noticed something.
Amelia was standing.
Olivia was gone.
Olivia had slipped through the rear gate.
She knew Adrian would try to stop her.
She knew Marcus would insist on a security team.
And she knew Evelyn would hurt Ryan if she arrived with anyone else.
So she made a decision.
She would go alone.
But she wasn't going unprepared.
Before leaving, she'd photographed every document in the wooden box and sent copies to an email account Ryan had created years earlier.
Then she'd hidden her phone's location-sharing feature beneath an ordinary weather application.
If something happened, someone would eventually find her.
She reached the street.
A black sedan waited beside the curb.
The rear window lowered.
Evelyn Cross sat inside.
"Get in, Olivia."
Olivia stared at her.
"Where's my brother?"
Evelyn smiled.
"Somewhere safe."
"Show me."
Evelyn raised her phone.
Ryan appeared on the screen.
He was alive.
Olivia swallowed.
Then she opened the car door.
At the shipping terminal, Ryan Marshall struggled against the restraints around his wrists.
He had overheard enough to understand Evelyn's plan.
She didn't simply want Olivia's inheritance.
She wanted Adrian destroyed.
And she intended to use the trust documents to make it happen.
Ryan looked toward the door.
A security guard stood outside.
Then he noticed something on the floor.
A small metal screw.
It had fallen from the chair.
He carefully stretched his fingers toward it.
If he could loosen the restraints, he might have one chance.
Then footsteps approached.
The door opened.
Victoria Cross entered.
Ryan stared.
"What are you doing here?"
She closed the door.
"Helping you."
He laughed bitterly.
"After everything you've done?"
Victoria approached.
"You don't understand. My mother has been lying to all of us."
Ryan stared.
"What?"
Victoria removed a photograph from her pocket.
It showed Richard Vale standing beside Daniel Marshall.
Both men were alive.
The photograph had been taken three months earlier.
Ryan felt his stomach drop.
"That's impossible."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
She leaned closer.
"Your father isn't the man you think he is."
At the Lincoln Park house, Adrian discovered Olivia's disappearance.
Marcus found the open rear gate.
Amelia found Olivia's empty bedroom.
Margaret began crying.
Adrian stood in the entrance hall, staring at Olivia's abandoned coat.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
IF YOU WANT OLIVIA ALIVE, COME TO THE SHIPPING TERMINAL.
A second message followed.
BRING YOUR FATHER.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward Daniel Marshall.
Daniel had gone completely pale.
Adrian stepped closer.
"What haven't you told us?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Adrian..."
"What?"
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
Then back at him.
"Your father never died."
Adrian felt the room tilt.
"Where is he?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"He's been working with Evelyn."
Before Adrian could respond, Marcus rushed into the room.
"Sir, there's an incoming video call."
Adrian grabbed the phone.
Olivia appeared on the screen.
She was sitting inside a moving car.
Evelyn sat beside her.
"Adrian," Olivia whispered.
He leaned forward.
"Olivia, listen to me—"
Evelyn took the phone.
"Hello, Adrian."
His expression hardened.
"If you hurt her—"
Evelyn smiled.
"Your father would be very disappointed to hear you speak that way."
Then she turned the camera.
A man sat in the front passenger seat.
Silver hair.
Familiar eyes.
A face Adrian had buried eight years earlier.
The man slowly turned around.
"Hello, son."
Adrian stopped breathing.
Then the man raised a small photograph.
It showed Olivia as a newborn.
On the back, someone had written three words.
SHE IS MINE.
May you like
And before Adrian could speak, the man looked directly into the camera and said:
"There's something you need to know about the night Olivia was born."
