Chapter 8 - The Truth Beneath the Empire

"There's something you need to know about the night Olivia was born."
Richard Vale stared directly into the camera.
Adrian gripped his phone.
"Then tell me."
Richard glanced toward Evelyn Cross.
She gave him a small nod.
"Twenty-seven years ago," Richard began, "Margaret Marshall gave birth to two daughters. But only one of those girls was supposed to leave the hospital."
Olivia turned sharply toward him.
"What?"
Richard's expression darkened.
"Someone paid a doctor to change the birth records. Someone wanted one child declared dead."
Olivia felt her stomach twist.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly at her.
"The woman sitting beside you."
Evelyn stopped smiling.
For one extraordinary second, nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn reached for the phone.
Richard pulled it away.
"Not yet."
"Richard," she warned.
"You promised me nobody else would get hurt."
Evelyn laughed coldly.
"And you believed me?"
Richard stared at her.
Olivia watched the exchange with growing disbelief.
The powerful businessman whose supposed death had shaped Adrian's life was sitting inches away from her, arguing with the woman who had orchestrated her family's destruction.
And suddenly, Olivia realized something.
They weren't partners anymore.
They were enemies trapped inside the same car.
"Adrian," Richard said quickly. "The original hospital records are inside the trust archive. The deposit box contains the access instructions."
Evelyn grabbed his wrist.
"Enough!"
The phone slipped.
The screen filled with darkness.
Olivia heard Richard shout.
Then the call disconnected.
Adrian stared at the blank screen.
Marcus was already moving.
"We have their vehicle."
"Where?"
"Heading south toward the shipping terminal."
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Get the cars."
Daniel stepped forward.
"I'm coming."
Adrian turned toward him.
"No."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"That's my daughter."
"Then start telling the truth."
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
"Adrian, please."
He looked at her.
"Your husband just told me my father has been working with Evelyn. My father has apparently been alive for eight years. And Olivia is sitting in a car with both of them."
He stepped toward Daniel.
"I don't have time for another carefully edited family history."
Daniel lowered his head.
"Richard didn't abandon you."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Really?"
"He disappeared because Evelyn threatened to expose something that would destroy your family."
Adrian stared.
"What?"
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
Then he spoke.
"Richard believed Olivia was his daughter. Evelyn convinced him that if he refused to cooperate, she would expose the affair and take away everything he'd built."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"And he chose his reputation over his son?"
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"He chose to stay alive long enough to find the evidence that could stop her."
Adrian stared at him.
"Eight years?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Adrian turned toward Marcus.
"Let's go."
Inside the black sedan, Olivia watched Evelyn put away her phone.
Richard sat rigidly in the front passenger seat.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Then Olivia broke the silence.
"You tried to kill Amelia."
Evelyn looked at her.
"That's a dramatic interpretation."
"You had her birth certificate marked deceased."
"That wasn't my decision."
"Then whose was it?"
Evelyn glanced toward Richard.
He remained silent.
Olivia leaned forward.
"Tell me."
Richard finally turned.
"Your father."
Olivia felt sick.
"Which father?"
The question silenced him.
Evelyn smiled.
"Now that's the question everyone's been avoiding."
Olivia stared at her.
"Was Daniel Marshall my father?"
Evelyn shrugged.
"Biology is such an inconvenient thing."
"ANSWER ME!"
Richard spoke before Evelyn could respond.
"Daniel raised you. That's what matters."
Olivia laughed bitterly.
"No. You don't get to decide what matters to me."
Richard looked away.
She continued.
"If you believed I was your daughter, why did you leave me with people who lied to me for twenty-seven years?"
Richard's expression changed.
"Because I was afraid."
The admission surprised her.
He looked older suddenly.
Less like the powerful businessman she'd seen in photographs.
More like a tired man who had spent years running from his mistakes.
"I was afraid Evelyn would hurt you."
Olivia stared at him.
"She already did."
Richard closed his eyes.
At the shipping terminal, Ryan Marshall sat beside Victoria Cross.
She had loosened the restraints around his wrists.
He rubbed his hands, watching her carefully.
"Why are you helping me?"
Victoria looked toward the door.
"Because my mother has decided I'm expendable."
Ryan studied her.
"She sent you to impersonate Amelia."
Victoria nodded.
"She wanted Olivia to trust me. She wanted me to find out what Adrian knew about the trust."
"And you agreed?"
Victoria's expression hardened.
"I spent my entire life believing Margaret destroyed my family."
Ryan shook his head.
"Your mother destroyed your family."
Victoria looked away.
"I know that now."
Ryan glanced toward the photograph she'd shown him.
Richard Vale and Daniel Marshall.
Alive.
Together.
Three months earlier.
"Where was this taken?"
Victoria hesitated.
"At Evelyn's private property outside Chicago."
Ryan stared.
"Why were they together?"
"Because they were looking for the same thing."
"What?"
Victoria lowered her voice.
"The original financial ledger."
Ryan frowned.
"I thought Evelyn had it."
"She has copies. The original contains handwritten notes identifying everyone involved."
Ryan felt his heartbeat accelerate.
"Including Evelyn?"
Victoria nodded.
"And the person who financed the entire operation."
"Who?"
Victoria looked directly at him.
"Felix's father."
The terminal's security alarm suddenly sounded.
Victoria stood.
Ryan looked toward the door.
"What happened?"
She checked her phone.
Then her expression changed.
"My mother is coming."
Ryan immediately stood.
"We need to leave."
Victoria shook her head.
"Not through the main entrance."
She opened a maintenance cabinet.
Inside were two reflective safety vests and a set of keys.
Ryan stared.
"You planned this?"
Victoria gave him a bitter smile.
"I've spent years preparing for the day my mother stopped needing me."
They hurried into the service corridor.
But before they reached the exit, Ryan heard something.
A woman's voice.
Olivia.
He stopped.
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
"That's my sister!"
"Ryan, listen to me."
He pulled away.
"OLIVIA!"
His voice echoed through the terminal.
A moment later, someone shouted his name.
"RYAN!"
He turned toward the sound.
And ran.
Olivia stumbled out of the sedan.
Evelyn had ordered her to walk toward the warehouse entrance.
Richard followed several steps behind.
Two security guards stood near the loading dock.
Then Olivia heard her brother.
"RYAN!"
She turned.
He emerged from a service corridor.
For one beautiful second, nothing else mattered.
She ran toward him.
Ryan caught her in his arms.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Olivia began crying.
"You idiot."
He held her tighter.
"I know."
"You gave Felix my address!"
"I know."
"You knew Mom was alive!"
His expression crumpled.
"I know."
She stepped backward.
"How could you?"
Ryan looked toward Evelyn.
"Because she threatened to kill you if I told the truth."
Olivia stared.
Evelyn approached slowly.
"How touching."
Ryan moved in front of his sister.
"Stay away from her."
Evelyn smiled.
"Ryan, sweetheart. After everything I've done for you?"
He glared at her.
"You destroyed our family."
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
"No. Your family destroyed itself."
She looked toward Richard.
"And now we're finally going to settle the inheritance."
Adrian's vehicles approached the shipping terminal from the west.
Marcus monitored the security cameras.
"Two guards at the entrance. Another vehicle behind the warehouse."
Adrian checked his phone.
Olivia's location signal was still active.
She had been clever enough to leave it running.
He felt a surge of pride.
Then immediately reminded himself that her safety mattered more than anything else.
"Police?"
"On their way."
"How long?"
"Ten minutes."
Adrian looked toward the terminal.
"Too long."
Marcus turned.
"Adrian, don't do anything reckless."
Adrian stared at him.
"She's inside."
"I know."
"And so is my father."
Marcus hesitated.
"That doesn't mean you have to confront them alone."
Adrian looked at the building.
For years, he had built his reputation on control.
He controlled businesses.
Properties.
Negotiations.
People feared disappointing him.
But he couldn't control what had happened to Olivia.
He couldn't undo her childhood.
He couldn't erase Felix.
And he couldn't change the fact that the man he'd mourned for eight years was apparently alive.
For once, Adrian understood that power meant very little if he couldn't protect the people who mattered.
He turned toward Marcus.
"We do this properly."
Marcus nodded.
"Then we wait for backup."
Adrian looked toward the warehouse.
And prayed Olivia could survive another ten minutes.
Inside the terminal, Evelyn placed a thick folder on a metal table.
"Sign."
Olivia stared at it.
"What is this?"
"A transfer agreement."
Ryan stepped forward.
"Don't touch it."
Evelyn ignored him.
"Your inheritance includes controlling interests in several properties and access to the original trust archive. I need you to transfer those rights."
Olivia looked at Richard.
"Is this what you wanted?"
He shook his head.
"No."
Evelyn turned sharply.
"Richard."
He stepped toward the table.
"Enough."
Evelyn stared at him.
"You don't get to change your mind now."
Richard looked at Olivia.
"I've made terrible mistakes. But I'm not letting you hurt her."
Evelyn laughed.
"How noble."
She reached into her handbag.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"Don't."
Olivia felt Ryan grab her hand.
Evelyn removed a small black device.
A remote control.
She pressed a button.
The warehouse doors slammed shut.
Heavy metal shutters descended over the windows.
Olivia stared.
"What did you do?"
Evelyn smiled.
"Made sure nobody interrupts us."
Outside, Marcus watched the security feed disappear.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"We've lost the cameras."
Adrian looked toward the terminal.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Evelyn's voice greeted him.
"Hello, Adrian."
His expression hardened.
"Where's Olivia?"
"Safe. For now."
"If you hurt her—"
"You'll do what? Buy another building? Send another team of expensive men?"
Adrian remained silent.
Evelyn continued.
"I know you're outside."
Marcus looked up sharply.
Adrian stared toward the warehouse.
"Then you know the police are coming."
Evelyn laughed.
"Good. They'll be very interested in the documents I'm about to release."
"What documents?"
"Proof that your father financed the operation that destroyed the Marshall family."
Adrian looked toward the terminal.
"My father isn't innocent. But neither are you."
Evelyn's voice changed.
"Careful."
Adrian took a breath.
"Let Olivia and Ryan go. Whatever you want, we can discuss it."
A pause.
Then Evelyn said something unexpected.
"I don't want money anymore."
Adrian frowned.
"Then what?"
"I want your father to confess."
The call ended.
Richard stood across from Evelyn.
"You promised me the children would be safe."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You promised me you'd keep your mouth shut."
Olivia watched them.
"Confess to what?"
Richard didn't answer.
Evelyn placed a second folder on the table.
Inside were hospital records.
Photographs.
And a document bearing Richard's signature.
Olivia reached for it.
Richard grabbed the folder.
"No."
Evelyn smiled.
"Tell her."
Richard's hands trembled.
Olivia stared at him.
"What happened the night I was born?"
He looked toward Ryan.
Then back at Olivia.
"Your mother was carrying twins. But the doctors discovered a serious complication."
Olivia felt her stomach tighten.
"Amelia?"
Richard nodded.
"She needed emergency treatment. Evelyn arranged a transfer to another hospital."
Ryan stared.
"And then?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"Evelyn told us Amelia had died."
Olivia's eyes filled.
"But she hadn't."
"No."
Evelyn folded her arms.
"Because I saved her."
Olivia turned toward her.
"You kidnapped her."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"I raised her when nobody else wanted her."
"Margaret wanted her!"
Evelyn laughed.
"Margaret wanted the inheritance."
Richard slammed the folder onto the table.
"Stop lying!"
Everyone froze.
He looked directly at Olivia.
"Margaret didn't know Amelia was alive until years later."
Olivia stared.
"Then why did she stay with Amelia after disappearing?"
Richard swallowed.
"Because Evelyn made a deal with her."
"What deal?"
Richard looked toward Evelyn.
"Margaret agreed to disappear in exchange for Amelia's safety."
Olivia covered her mouth.
For the first time, her mother's disappearance made a terrible kind of sense.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Then she noticed something.
Richard was still holding the hospital document.
His signature appeared beneath a section labeled Paternity Acknowledgment.
Olivia stared.
"Did you sign that?"
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"Because you were my father?"
He hesitated.
Evelyn smiled.
"Go on, Richard."
Olivia felt her heart pounding.
Richard looked at her.
"Because I believed you were."
Silence.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He removed a sealed envelope.
"Three months ago, Daniel and I finally obtained the original DNA results."
Olivia stopped breathing.
Richard placed the envelope on the table.
"Your mother never knew."
Ryan stepped closer.
Olivia stared at the envelope.
She wanted to open it.
She was terrified to open it.
Because the answer would change everything.
Not simply her inheritance.
Her relationship with Adrian.
Her understanding of the family she'd spent her life trying to find.
She slowly reached forward.
Then Evelyn grabbed the envelope.
"Not until she signs."
Olivia looked up.
"No."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"What?"
"I'm not signing anything."
Ryan moved beside her.
Richard stepped forward.
And for the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely uncertain.
Outside, the first police vehicles arrived.
Marcus immediately approached the officers.
Adrian remained beside the SUV.
His phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
The sealed envelope.
Beneath it were four words.
COME INSIDE. COME ALONE.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
YOUR FATHER HAS TEN MINUTES.
Marcus approached.
"Adrian, the police are preparing to enter."
Adrian looked toward the warehouse.
"Something's wrong."
"What?"
"Evelyn wants me inside."
Marcus frowned.
"Then don't give her what she wants."
Adrian looked at the photograph.
Then he noticed something unusual.
The envelope wasn't sealed with ordinary adhesive.
It carried the embossed crest of Richard Vale's private legal office.
A crest Adrian hadn't seen in eight years.
He enlarged the image.
A handwritten number appeared beneath it.
317.
The same number as Margaret's hotel room.
The same number as the safety deposit box.
Adrian suddenly understood.
The envelope wasn't merely a DNA report.
It was another key.
And someone had spent eleven years making sure Olivia would eventually find it.
Inside the warehouse, Olivia stared at Evelyn.
"Give me the envelope."
Evelyn smiled.
"Sign."
"No."
Richard stepped between them.
"Give it to her."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You really are pathetic."
Richard didn't move.
"Enough."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn slowly placed the envelope on the table.
Olivia reached for it.
Ryan stood beside her.
Richard watched silently.
She broke the seal.
Inside were two documents.
The first was a DNA report.
The second was a handwritten letter.
Olivia unfolded the report.
Her eyes moved down the page.
Then she stopped.
Her breath caught.
Ryan leaned closer.
"What does it say?"
Olivia stared at the result.
Richard Vale was not her biological father.
She felt tears gathering.
Then she looked at the second name.
Daniel Marshall.
A confirmed paternal match.
Olivia began crying.
Richard closed his eyes.
And somewhere outside, Adrian received the same results through an encrypted message.
He stared at his phone.
Then slowly exhaled.
Olivia wasn't his sister.
But before he could process the relief, Marcus shouted.
"Adrian!"
He turned.
"What?"
Marcus held up his phone.
"We found the original trust archive."
Adrian stared.
"Where?"
Marcus looked toward the warehouse.
"Underneath the shipping terminal."
Adrian's expression changed.
"How do you know?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Because someone just activated the underground security system."
Inside the warehouse, Evelyn watched Olivia read the DNA report.
Then she smiled.
"Congratulations."
Olivia looked up.
"What?"
"Now you know who your father is."
Ryan stepped forward.
"Let us go."
Evelyn ignored him.
She reached into her handbag.
And removed another photograph.
This one showed a younger Margaret Marshall standing beside Richard Vale.
Between them stood a man Olivia had never seen before.
He wore a dark suit.
A silver watch.
And a familiar smile.
Olivia stared.
"Who is that?"
Evelyn looked directly at her.
"The man who owns the original trust."
Richard went completely pale.
"No."
Evelyn smiled.
"Oh, yes."
She turned the photograph over.
There was a name written on the back.
Olivia slowly read it.
Thomas Cross.
Evelyn's supposedly dead husband.
Ryan stared.
"He's alive?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the warehouse's rear entrance.
A heavy mechanical lock clicked.
Richard stepped backward.
"Evelyn, what have you done?"
She smiled.
"Finished what we started."
The underground elevator began rising.
Olivia heard footsteps approaching from beneath the floor.
Then the elevator doors opened.
A man stepped out.
He was carrying the original trust document.
May you like
And when Richard saw his face, he whispered:
"That's impossible. I watched you die."
