Chapter 5 - The Photograph Behind the Locked Door

"Who are you?" Olivia whispered.

The woman sitting in the chair slowly stood.

Olivia stumbled backward.

It was like looking into a mirror that showed a life she had never lived.

The same brown eyes.

The same delicate nose.

The same shape of her lips.

Even the small beauty mark beneath her left eye was identical.

But the woman had shorter hair, pale skin, and a thin white scar running along her right eyebrow.

And she was holding a birth certificate with Olivia Marshall's name crossed out.

"Mom," Olivia whispered. "What is this?"

Margaret Marshall covered her mouth.

The woman in the chair looked past Olivia.

"Hello, Mother."

Adrian went completely still.

Marcus reached instinctively toward his phone.

And Olivia felt the floor disappear beneath her feet.

"Mother?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"She never told you about me, did she?"

The fire alarm continued screaming through the hotel.

Red emergency lights flashed in the hallway.

Marcus checked the security feed on his phone.

"Adrian, we have less than three minutes before Felix's people reach this floor."

Adrian didn't look away from the woman.

"Who are you?"

She placed the birth certificate on the desk.

"My name is Amelia."

Olivia stared at her.

"Amelia who?"

The woman's smile disappeared.

"Amelia Marshall."

Silence.

Olivia turned toward Margaret.

"No."

Her mother began crying.

"Olivia, please let me explain."

"No!"

Olivia pointed toward Amelia.

"Tell me why there's another woman in this room who looks exactly like me!"

Margaret lowered herself into a chair.

"Because she's your sister."

Olivia's breath caught.

"Ryan is my only sibling."

Margaret shook her head.

"No, sweetheart."

She looked toward Amelia.

"She's your twin."

For several seconds, Olivia couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in her ears.

A twin.

An identical twin.

A sister who had apparently existed somewhere in the world while Olivia grew up believing she had only one sibling.

She looked at Amelia.

"How old are you?"

"Twenty-seven."

"My birthday?"

"October seventeenth."

Olivia closed her eyes.

The same birthday.

The same face.

The same mother.

"Where have you been?"

Amelia's expression hardened.

"That's a very good question."

She turned toward Margaret.

"Why don't you answer it?"

Adrian approached the desk.

The room was filled with photographs.

Some showed Olivia as a child.

Others had been taken much more recently.

One showed her leaving the diner where she had worked under a false name.

Another showed Felix standing outside her apartment.

Adrian picked it up.

"When were these taken?"

Amelia folded her arms.

"Different times."

"Who took them?"

"People who were paid to watch her."

Olivia felt sick.

"By whom?"

Amelia looked at Margaret.

"Ask our mother."

Margaret shook her head.

"It wasn't like that."

Amelia laughed bitterly.

"Really? Because from where I was sitting, it looked exactly like that."

Marcus appeared in the doorway.

"Adrian. We need to move."

Adrian glanced at Olivia.

She hadn't moved.

Her eyes remained fixed on Amelia.

"Give us sixty seconds."

Marcus disappeared into the hallway.

Olivia slowly approached the desk.

She picked up the birth certificate.

Her own name had been crossed out with thick black ink.

Beneath it, someone had written:

Amelia Rose Marshall.

There were two birth certificates attached together.

Both listed Margaret Marshall as the mother.

Both carried the same date.

But one document had been stamped with a red word.

DECEASED.

Olivia looked up.

"Why does your birth certificate say you died?"

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because someone wanted the world to believe I never existed."

Margaret finally spoke.

"When you girls were born, your father was involved in a terrible financial dispute."

Olivia turned.

"Our father left when we were children."

"That's what I told you."

Olivia felt anger rising.

"What else did you lie about?"

Margaret twisted her wedding ring.

"Your father discovered that his business partners were stealing money. He wanted to report them. They threatened our family."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"Who were his partners?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Your father. Felix's father. And someone connected to your family."

Adrian stared.

"My father?"

"No."

She looked toward the door.

"Someone much closer."

Amelia interrupted.

"Stop protecting him."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Amelia."

"Tell her!"

Olivia looked between them.

"Tell me what?"

Amelia approached her.

"Your father didn't abandon you."

Olivia felt her stomach tighten.

"He disappeared because he discovered what our mother was hiding."

Margaret stood.

"That's enough!"

Amelia turned toward her.

"No. You don't get to decide what's enough anymore."

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Marcus shouted something.

Adrian immediately moved toward the door.

"Everyone out. Now."

They escaped through a service corridor.

Marcus led them down a narrow staircase while two security associates remained near the elevators.

Olivia followed Amelia.

Margaret walked behind them.

Adrian stayed close to Olivia without touching her.

Nobody spoke.

But Olivia's mind was racing.

A twin sister.

A mother who had faked her death.

A brother who had known the truth.

A father who might not have abandoned them.

And Felix Kesler, who had somehow been connected to everything.

They reached a service exit.

Marcus opened the door.

A black SUV waited in the alley.

"Get in."

Olivia stopped.

"Where are we going?"

"Somewhere secure."

She shook her head.

"No more secret locations."

Adrian turned toward her.

"Olivia, Felix's people are inside the hotel."

"And every time I follow you, I discover another lie!"

He studied her.

Then nodded.

"You're right."

Marcus looked at him.

"Adrian—"

"Give her the address."

Marcus hesitated.

Adrian repeated himself.

"The address."

Marcus handed Olivia a card.

A residential property in Lincoln Park.

"An ordinary house," Adrian explained. "No locked rooms. No restrictions. You can leave whenever you choose."

Olivia looked at Amelia.

"Are you coming?"

Amelia hesitated.

Then glanced at Margaret.

"Only if she doesn't."

Margaret looked devastated.

"Amelia, please."

"No."

Olivia felt something unfamiliar stir inside her.

She barely knew this woman.

Yet she understood her anger.

"She's coming with me," Olivia said.

Adrian nodded.

"Then let's go."

Felix Kesler watched the hotel security footage with growing fury.

Olivia had escaped.

Again.

But this time, she had taken Amelia.

He slammed his phone against the desk.

Evelyn Cross stood near the window.

"You told me Amelia wouldn't leave that room!"

Evelyn remained calm.

"Margaret was supposed to keep her there."

"Well, Margaret apparently forgot the arrangement!"

Evelyn turned.

"Lower your voice."

Felix stared at her.

"Don't tell me what to do."

She approached him slowly.

"Your father made the same mistake."

Felix went silent.

Evelyn placed a photograph on his desk.

It showed two newborn babies lying beside each other.

One wore a pink hospital bracelet.

The other wore a yellow one.

Felix frowned.

"What is this?"

"The beginning of everything."

He picked up the photograph.

On the back, someone had written two names.

Olivia.

Amelia.

Felix looked up.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Because you've been chasing the wrong sister."

The Lincoln Park house was beautiful.

Olivia hated it immediately.

Not because of the furniture or the large windows.

Because it reminded her of Felix's house.

Expensive.

Perfect.

Silent.

She stood in the entrance while Adrian spoke quietly with Marcus.

Amelia wandered into the living room.

She examined the bookshelves, the photographs, and the open staircase.

"Do you own this place?" Olivia asked.

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Of course you do."

He almost smiled.

She didn't.

"Where's my brother?"

Marcus approached.

"We're tracking the vehicle that took him."

Olivia turned.

"Tracking?"

"We identified the car leaving the motel. It was last seen near an industrial property south of the river."

"Then why aren't we there?"

Adrian answered carefully.

"Because rushing in without knowing who has him could make things worse."

Olivia folded her arms.

"He's my brother."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Adrian looked at her.

"You're right. I don't know what it feels like to be you."

The answer surprised her.

He continued.

"But I know what it's like to lose someone because you trusted the wrong person."

For a moment, something passed between them.

Not trust.

Not yet.

But recognition.

Olivia looked away first.

An hour later, Amelia found Olivia sitting alone in the kitchen.

Two untouched cups of coffee stood on the table.

"Can I sit?"

Olivia nodded.

Amelia pulled out a chair.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Olivia asked the question that had been burning inside her.

"Did you know about me?"

Amelia stared into her coffee.

"Always."

Olivia swallowed.

"You knew you had a twin?"

"Yes."

"And you never contacted me?"

Amelia looked up.

"I tried."

Olivia felt her chest tighten.

"When?"

"On your eighteenth birthday."

Olivia remembered that birthday.

Ryan had taken her to dinner.

Felix hadn't entered her life yet.

She had received a strange envelope in the mail.

No return address.

Inside had been a photograph of two little girls.

She had assumed it was a cruel joke.

Ryan had taken the photograph away.

"Oh, God."

Amelia nodded.

"You remember."

Olivia covered her mouth.

"That was you?"

"I wrote you a letter. I explained everything I knew."

"I never got a letter."

Amelia's expression changed.

"Ryan told me you didn't want to meet me."

Olivia stared.

"He said that?"

Amelia nodded.

"He said you wanted to forget the past."

Olivia felt tears gathering.

"I didn't even know you existed."

For the first time, Amelia began crying.

"I thought you hated me."

Olivia reached across the table.

Amelia hesitated.

Then she took her hand.

Their fingers looked almost identical.

Olivia laughed through her tears.

"This is insane."

Amelia smiled.

"Tell me about it."

For one brief moment, they were simply sisters.

Then Olivia noticed something.

Amelia had a small scar on her wrist.

Three narrow lines.

"What happened?"

Amelia immediately pulled her hand away.

"Nothing."

Olivia stared.

"Amelia."

Her sister stood.

"I need some air."

She hurried from the kitchen.

Olivia watched her disappear.

And suddenly understood that the secrets hadn't ended.

They had barely begun.

Adrian found Olivia in the garden twenty minutes later.

She stood beneath the covered terrace, watching rain fall across the lawn.

"Marcus found something," he said.

Olivia turned immediately.

"Ryan?"

"Not yet."

Her shoulders dropped.

"But we recovered footage from the motel."

He handed her a tablet.

The recording showed Ryan leaving his room.

Evelyn walked beside him.

Then another man appeared.

Olivia leaned closer.

She recognized him.

"No."

Adrian watched her expression.

"You know him?"

Olivia's hands began shaking.

"That's impossible."

The man on the screen wore a dark coat.

His hair was gray.

His face was older than she remembered.

But she knew those eyes.

She knew that smile.

She knew the way he walked.

"Olivia?"

She looked up at Adrian.

"That's my father."

Adrian went completely still.

"Your father?"

She nodded.

"Daniel Marshall."

Adrian stared at the recording.

Then he took the tablet.

"Marcus!"

His head of security appeared immediately.

"Find everything you can on Daniel Marshall."

Marcus frowned.

"Daniel Marshall died fourteen years ago."

Olivia shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward the screen.

"That's him."

Adrian enlarged the image.

The man's face filled the screen.

And Adrian's expression changed.

"Olivia."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"That's not Daniel Marshall."

Her heart stopped.

"Then who is it?"

Adrian stared at the photograph.

"My father."

Inside the house, Amelia stood alone in an upstairs bedroom.

She had locked the door.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A familiar voice spoke.

"You shouldn't have left the hotel."

Amelia closed her eyes.

"Evelyn."

"Where's Olivia?"

"I'm not telling you."

A pause.

Then Evelyn laughed softly.

"Still pretending you're protecting her?"

Amelia's hands began shaking.

"Leave us alone."

"You know what happens if she discovers the truth."

Amelia looked toward the bedroom mirror.

Her reflection stared back.

The same face as Olivia.

Almost.

"She deserves to know."

Evelyn's voice hardened.

"Then tell her what happened eleven years ago."

Amelia stopped breathing.

"Tell her why Margaret chose you."

The call ended.

Amelia slowly lowered the phone.

Then she opened the drawer beside the bed.

Inside was a small envelope she'd secretly taken from Room 317.

She removed its contents.

A photograph.

Two young girls.

A hospital corridor.

And a handwritten note.

Only one daughter can inherit.

Amelia stared at the words.

Then she began to cry.

Downstairs, Olivia confronted Adrian.

"Your father?"

Adrian nodded slowly.

"But you said he died!"

"He did."

"Then how is he walking around Chicago?"

Adrian stared at the screen.

"I don't know."

Olivia felt anger rising again.

"Everyone in this city is apparently alive except the people who are supposed to be!"

Adrian almost laughed.

Then he noticed something in the recording.

A small detail.

The man wearing his father's face had a silver ring on his right hand.

Adrian enlarged the image.

His expression darkened.

"That's not my father's ring."

Olivia leaned closer.

"What?"

Adrian pointed.

"My father wore a family signet ring on his left hand. Always."

"So?"

"So someone is pretending to be him."

Olivia stared.

"Why?"

Adrian looked toward the staircase.

"Because someone wants us to believe the dead are coming back."

A door slammed upstairs.

Both of them turned.

Amelia appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her face was pale.

She held an envelope.

"Olivia," she whispered.

"I need to show you something."

Olivia approached.

Amelia descended slowly.

She handed her the photograph.

Olivia examined it.

Two little girls.

A hospital corridor.

A handwritten note.

Then she turned the photograph over.

There was another message.

Written in Margaret's handwriting.

If anything happens to me, tell Olivia what happened to her real father.

Olivia looked up.

"Real father?"

Amelia began crying.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry for what?"

Amelia opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the front doorbell rang.

Marcus checked the security monitor.

His expression changed.

"Adrian."

Adrian approached.

"What?"

Marcus turned the screen toward him.

A woman stood outside the front gate.

She wore a dark coat.

Her hair was soaked from the rain.

In her arms, she held a small wooden box.

Olivia recognized her immediately.

Margaret Marshall.

Her mother.

But when Margaret looked directly into the security camera, she held up a handwritten sign.

THE WOMAN YOU RESCUED IS NOT AMELIA.

Olivia slowly turned toward the staircase.

The woman standing beside her had disappeared.

May you like

Then a scream came from the upstairs bedroom.

And someone shouted Olivia's name.
