Chapter 5 - The Name My Father Hid

The birth certificate belonged to Mara.

But one line was different from the version she'd seen her entire life.

Father:

ROBERT ELLISON.

Mother:

ELIZABETH ELLISON.

And beneath an attached amendment was another name.

Biological father:

THOMAS REED.

Mara stared at Rebecca.

"Who is Thomas Reed?"

Rebecca closed her eyes.

"Your biological father."

Mara stood.

"No."

"Robert raised you."

"He was my father."

"Absolutely."

"Then why did Victor say the company was supposed to go to someone else?"

Rebecca removed another document.

"Because Robert originally planned to divide ownership."

"With whom?"

"Thomas."

Mara laughed in disbelief.

"My biological father?"

"No."

Rebecca paused.

"His son."

Mara felt the room tilt.

"I have a brother?"

"Half brother."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"What's his name?"

"Michael Reed."

Mara sat down again.

Her father had hidden an entire branch of her life.

Rebecca explained.

Elizabeth had been briefly involved with Thomas Reed before meeting Robert. She discovered she was pregnant after the relationship ended.

Robert knew.

He married her anyway.

He raised Mara as his own.

Thomas later reappeared.

Not demanding custody.

Asking to know his daughter.

Elizabeth refused.

Years passed.

Thomas built a small construction business.

His son Michael eventually worked with Ellison Heritage.

Robert discovered who he was.

Instead of rejecting him, Robert quietly mentored him.

Then Victor found out.

"Victor thought Michael could challenge your inheritance," Rebecca explained.

"So Dad removed him?"

"No. Michael disappeared."

"When?"

"Six years ago."

Mara's stomach tightened.

Around the time Daniel began meeting Victor.

Rebecca handed her a photograph.

Michael Reed.

Mara recognized him.

Nathan Cross.

The private banker from room 1708.

Mara stood so quickly her chair fell.

"He's alive."

Rebecca stared.

"What?"

"I saw him."

Mara showed her the photograph she'd taken at the hotel.

Rebecca went white.

"That's Michael."

Everything changed.

They found Nathan Cross's banking office empty.

The phone number was disconnected.

The hotel registration had been made using false identification.

Detective Grant issued an alert.

Meanwhile, Victor disappeared.

His house was empty.

His accounts were being drained.

Daniel cooperated with investigators.

For once, completely.

He turned over emails.

Passwords.

Accounts.

He admitted the affair.

The forgery.

The conspiracy.

Everything.

His attorney hated it.

Daniel didn't care.

"I've spent five years protecting myself," he told Mara during one supervised meeting. "I'm done."

Mara didn't forgive him.

But she listened.

"Why did Victor fear Michael?"

"Because Michael knew about the stolen money."

"Did you know he was my brother?"

"No."

"Did Dad?"

"I think so."

Mara studied him.

"One more lie and I walk out."

Daniel nodded.

"I didn't know."

She believed him.

That made things more complicated, not less.

Claire also cooperated.

She gave prosecutors everything.

Her testimony showed Daniel had participated willingly but Victor had orchestrated the financial scheme.

Then Claire did something Mara didn't expect.

She apologized without asking for forgiveness.

"I knew he was married."

Mara said nothing.

"I told myself your marriage was already over because that's what Daniel said."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

"But I saw your photographs in his office. I saw your messages. I knew."

Mara appreciated the honesty.

"I hurt you because I wanted something."

Claire cried.

"I'm sorry."

Mara answered quietly.

"I believe you're sorry."

Claire looked hopeful.

"That doesn't mean I trust you."

The hope disappeared.

"I understand."

Mara left.

Weeks passed.

Auditors uncovered thirty-one million dollars in theft and attempted transfers.

Victor remained missing.

Then Michael Reed contacted Mara.

He requested a meeting.

Alone.

She refused.

They met at Rebecca's office with Detective Grant present.

Michael entered.

He looked like Thomas Reed in old photographs.

He also had Mara's eyes.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally Michael smiled nervously.

"Hi."

Mara almost laughed.

"Hi."

He explained that Victor had tried to recruit him years earlier.

Michael refused.

Then he discovered the embezzlement.

Victor threatened him.

Michael changed his name and disappeared.

"Why come back now?"

"Your father asked me to."

Mara stared.

"He's dead."

Michael removed a letter.

"Robert gave this to me six years ago. He told me if Victor ever moved against you, I had to come back."

Mara read it.

Robert had known Michael was her half brother.

He had planned to tell Mara.

Then he died.

"Why didn't you contact me?"

"I was afraid."

Mara thought of Daniel.

Fear.

It had shaped everyone around her.

"I watched from a distance," Michael said. "When Victor started moving money again, I came back."

"Room 1708?"

"I pretended to help them arrange the transfers."

"So you were gathering evidence."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know if Daniel had already convinced you."

Mara looked away.

Fair.

Michael slid another envelope across the table.

"Robert left this with me."

Inside was a revised corporate succession plan.

Mara received seventy-five percent.

Michael received twenty-five.

Mara looked at him.

"Do you want it?"

Michael shook his head.

"I want my brother back."

She blinked.

"Half brother."

"Still counts."

For the first time in weeks, Mara smiled.

Then Detective Grant's phone rang.

His expression changed.

Victor had been found.

At the airport.

Trying to leave the country.

He was arrested.

Mara thought it was over.

It wasn't.

That evening, Daniel called.

She almost ignored it.

Then answered.

"Mara."

His voice sounded strange.

"What?"

"I found something in Victor's files."

"What?"

"A scheduled transfer."

"Of money?"

"No."

Daniel paused.

"Ownership."

Mara sat down.

"To whom?"

"That's the problem."

"What problem?"

"The transfer wasn't going to Victor."

Mara's heartbeat accelerated.

"Then who?"

Daniel whispered:

"Michael."

Mara looked across Rebecca's office.

Michael's chair was empty.

The envelope he'd brought remained on the table.

But the twenty-five-percent succession document was gone.

Then Mara's phone buzzed.

A message from Michael.

Don't trust anyone until you see what Robert left in the basement.

Mara stared at it.

Rebecca whispered, "What basement?"

Mara knew exactly which one.

Her father's old house.

The house had been locked for five years.

They drove there.

Mara reached the basement door.

The lock had already been broken.

She pushed it open.

A light was burning below.

May you like

Someone was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

And he was holding her father's missing trust documents.
