Chapter 3 - My Father's Last Warning

Victor Hale entered room 1708.

Mara stared at him.

Claire backed toward the window.

Daniel said nothing.

Victor looked at Mara and sighed.

"You weren't supposed to be here."

Mara almost laughed.

People kept saying that.

As though her own life were a private meeting she had interrupted.

Rebecca stepped beside her.

"Victor."

His eyes narrowed.

"Rebecca."

They clearly knew each other better than Mara realized.

Mara held up the forged incapacity document.

"Did you create this?"

Victor removed his coat.

"Sit down."

"No."

"Mara, you're misunderstanding—"

"Apparently that's contagious."

Victor looked at Daniel.

"You told me she wouldn't find out."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Claire panicked."

Claire stared at him.

"Don't blame me."

Victor's expression remained calm.

"We can still resolve this."

Mara couldn't believe the arrogance.

"Resolve forgery?"

"You signed authorization."

"I signed blank insurance acknowledgments."

Daniel looked away.

Victor frowned at him.

"You told me she understood."

That sentence mattered.

Mara caught it immediately.

Daniel had lied to Victor too.

Maybe not about everything.

But something.

Rebecca said, "You should stop talking."

Victor smiled.

"Still protecting Robert's daughter?"

Robert.

Mara's father.

"How well did you know my father?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Very well."

"You worked for him."

"I helped build his company."

Mara studied him.

"And you think that makes it yours?"

Victor leaned forward.

"I think your father made mistakes."

"Leaving it to me?"

"Leaving control with someone who didn't want to run it."

Mara felt the insult but didn't react.

After her father's death, she had kept professional managers in place rather than becoming CEO.

Daniel often mocked that decision privately.

"You own a company you barely enter," he'd once said.

She'd answered, "Ownership doesn't require pretending I know more than the people my father trained."

Now she understood how Daniel had interpreted restraint.

As weakness.

Victor continued.

"Daniel came to me because he was worried."

"About what?"

"Your ability to manage your inheritance."

Mara looked at Daniel.

"My ability?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"You weren't interested in the company."

"So you decided to steal it?"

"I was trying to protect what your father built."

Mara laughed.

Daniel flinched.

It was the first time she'd laughed since finding him with Claire.

"You were sleeping with your assistant while forging documents declaring your wife mentally incompetent, and you're calling yourself a protector?"

Claire looked down.

Daniel flushed.

Victor interrupted.

"The personal situation is irrelevant."

"No," Mara said. "It tells me exactly who I'm dealing with."

Rebecca touched Mara's arm.

"We have enough."

Victor's confidence shifted.

"Enough for what?"

Rebecca smiled.

"That's the question, isn't it?"

They left.

Daniel followed Mara into the hallway.

"Mara."

She kept walking.

"Mara!"

He caught up near the elevator.

"Don't destroy everything because you're angry."

Mara pressed the button.

"I'm not angry."

"Then listen."

The elevator opened.

Mara stepped inside.

Daniel followed.

Rebecca stopped him.

"Not invited."

Daniel stared at his wife.

"Mara, Victor manipulated this."

Mara looked at him.

"Did Victor put your arm around Claire?"

Daniel went silent.

The doors closed.

Back at Rebecca's office, they opened Claire's flash drive.

There were hundreds of files.

Emails.

Contracts.

Voice recordings.

Bank statements.

And a folder titled ROBERT ELLISON.

Mara stopped.

"Open it."

Rebecca hesitated.

"Mara—"

"Open it."

Inside were scanned letters from Mara's father.

The first was dated six months before his death.

Rebecca read silently.

Then handed it over.

Mara recognized her father's handwriting.

Rebecca,

If anything happens to me before I can complete the restructuring, do not allow Victor Hale access to Mara's controlling trust.

Daniel may appear supportive, but I have concerns about his relationship with Victor.

Mara's hands shook.

Five years earlier.

Her father had suspected Daniel.

"Why didn't you show me?"

Rebecca looked devastated.

"Because Robert changed his mind."

"What?"

"Two weeks later he called and told me to destroy the letter."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because your father sounded afraid."

Mara continued reading.

Another document showed a transfer attempt from five years earlier.

The beneficiary?

Victor Hale.

It had been rejected.

Mara whispered, "He was trying to steal the company before Dad died."

Rebecca nodded.

"Your father discovered it."

"And Daniel?"

"We don't know."

Mara opened another file.

An audio recording.

She pressed play.

Her father's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this, something went wrong."

Mara covered her mouth.

She hadn't heard his voice in years.

Robert continued.

"Victor believes Ellison belongs to him because he helped build it. He's wrong. But I'm more concerned about Daniel."

Mara closed her eyes.

"Daniel is ambitious. Ambition isn't a crime. But I've watched Victor feed it."

The recording crackled.

"I hope I'm wrong about your husband."

Mara began crying silently.

Rebecca reached for her hand.

Then Robert said:

"If I'm not, Mara must know one thing. Daniel doesn't understand her."

Mara opened her eyes.

"He thinks kindness means she won't fight back."

The recording ended.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Mara wiped her tears.

"Then let's prove Dad right."

Rebecca smiled.

For the next three days, Mara pretended nothing had changed.

Daniel returned home.

She let him.

He slept in the guest room.

He tried explanations.

She listened.

He claimed Victor had convinced him that Mara's passive ownership threatened the company.

He claimed the incapacity paperwork was merely a contingency.

He admitted the affair.

He apologized.

Sometimes convincingly.

Mara never told him about her father's recording.

More importantly, she never told him Claire's drive contained copies of everything.

Instead, Mara began attending Ellison Heritage meetings.

Victor looked shocked the first morning she entered the executive boardroom.

"Good morning," Mara said.

She sat in her father's chair.

For the next four hours, she asked questions.

Good ones.

Questions Victor didn't expect.

Where had twelve million dollars in development reserves gone?

Why had Daniel's consulting company received unexplained fees?

Why were several properties being moved into newly formed LLCs?

Victor answered smoothly.

Mara wrote everything down.

At home, Daniel grew nervous.

"What are you doing?"

"Learning my company."

"Victor thinks you're disrupting operations."

"Victor works for me."

Daniel stared.

That sentence seemed to physically bother him.

Mara smiled.

"Does that surprise you?"

"No."

"It looked like it did."

She walked upstairs.

By Friday, Rebecca had found the money.

Twenty-three million dollars.

Moved gradually over five years.

Victor hadn't merely tried to take control.

He had been stealing.

Daniel had helped during the last eighteen months.

Mara stared at the spreadsheet.

"Can we prove Daniel knew?"

"Not yet."

Then Rebecca opened another email.

Daniel to Victor.

Once Mara signs, we're protected.

Mara felt sick.

"That's enough."

Rebecca shook her head.

"For conspiracy, maybe. But there's more."

"How much more?"

Rebecca opened a banking record.

A life insurance policy.

Mara's name.

Twenty million dollars.

Beneficiary:

Daniel Ellison.

Mara stopped breathing.

"When was this opened?"

"Eight months ago."

The affair had begun eight months ago.

Mara stared at Rebecca.

"Did I sign this?"

"No."

Another forged signature.

Then Rebecca noticed something.

"Wait."

Attached to the policy was a medical examination.

Mara had supposedly completed it at St. Catherine's Clinic.

She had never been there.

Rebecca whispered, "This isn't just financial fraud."

Mara's phone rang.

Claire.

She answered.

"Mara?"

Claire sounded terrified.

"What happened?"

"I found something."

"Where?"

"Daniel's private storage unit."

Mara stood.

"What did you find?"

"Your father's things."

Mara couldn't speak.

"Claire, leave."

"I already did."

"Where are you?"

"Parking garage."

"Send me the address."

Claire began to answer.

Then Mara heard a car door slam.

Claire gasped.

"Claire?"

Footsteps.

Running.

"Mara, someone followed me."

"Get inside your car."

"I can't. He's between me and—"

The phone struck something.

"Claire!"

Mara heard breathing.

Then a man's voice.

"Give me the phone."

Claire screamed.

The line went dead.

Mara looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca was already calling the police.

Then Mara's phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived from Claire's number.

Claire's abandoned handbag lay on concrete.

Beside it was a familiar silver watch.

Daniel's watch.

May you like

And underneath the photograph were three words:

COME ALONE, MARA.
