Chapter 2 - Room 1708

Mara stepped backward as the door opened.

Rebecca Sloan stood outside.

Daniel appeared behind Mara and went completely still.

Rebecca looked from him to Mara.

Then to the open safe visible upstairs.

"I think I'm just in time."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What are you doing here?"

Rebecca entered without answering.

Mara locked the door.

"You told me tomorrow morning."

"I changed my mind."

Rebecca carried a thick brown envelope.

Daniel stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Something you were never supposed to see."

Daniel laughed without humor.

"This is my house."

Rebecca looked at Mara.

"No. It isn't."

Silence.

Daniel turned toward his wife.

"What does that mean?"

Mara didn't know either.

Rebecca placed the envelope on the dining table.

"Your father purchased this house through the family trust before you married Daniel. The trust owns it. You are the beneficiary."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You've been married seven years," Rebecca continued. "That doesn't automatically give you ownership of protected trust assets."

"I know how trusts work."

"Apparently."

"Rebecca," Mara interrupted. "Why are my documents missing?"

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

"Ask him."

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"I didn't take anything."

Mara watched his face.

Yesterday she would have searched for reasons to believe him.

Tonight she searched for evidence that he was lying.

She found plenty.

Rebecca opened the envelope.

Inside were photocopies of banking records, corporate filings, and emails.

"Six weeks ago someone submitted a request to restructure Ellison Heritage Holdings."

Mara sat down.

"Who?"

"The request came through Daniel's consulting company."

Daniel shook his head.

"That's standard business."

"No, it isn't."

Rebecca slid forward a page.

Mara saw her signature.

Except she had never signed it.

Daniel looked away.

"That isn't mine."

"I know," Rebecca said.

"Then somebody forged it."

"Yes."

Rebecca looked directly at him.

"Somebody did."

Daniel's face reddened.

"Are you accusing me?"

"No. I'm showing Mara a document."

Mara examined the signature.

It was frighteningly good.

Then she remembered the blank acknowledgment pages.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"The insurance paperwork."

His expression betrayed him for less than a second.

Rebecca noticed.

So did Mara.

Daniel recovered.

"What insurance paperwork?"

"The pages you asked me to sign."

"I don't remember that."

"You remember everything."

"Mara, you're upset."

That sentence changed something.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was familiar.

Whenever Mara challenged Daniel about finances, he called her emotional.

Whenever she questioned a decision, he said she was overwhelmed.

Her father had warned her once.

Never let somebody turn your emotions into evidence against your intelligence.

Mara hadn't understood then.

She did now.

"I'm not upset," she said. "I'm paying attention."

Daniel stared at her.

Rebecca almost smiled.

Mara picked up the hotel photograph on her phone.

"What's happening in room 1708 tomorrow?"

Daniel's confidence disappeared.

"Nothing."

"Then why is it confirmed?"

Claire suddenly called him.

Her name illuminated the screen.

Daniel declined.

Rebecca noticed.

"Answer it."

"No."

Mara said, "Answer."

Daniel looked at her.

The phone rang again.

Finally, he answered.

"Claire."

Her voice was loud enough to hear.

"Daniel, don't come tomorrow."

He turned away.

"Why?"

"They know."

Daniel stiffened.

"Who knows?"

Claire's voice dropped.

"The wife."

Daniel looked directly at Mara.

Claire continued.

"And somebody accessed the Ellison file."

Rebecca's eyes sharpened.

Daniel ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Mara asked, "What Ellison file?"

Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket.

"Claire doesn't know what she's talking about."

Rebecca gathered her papers.

"Then tomorrow should be interesting."

Daniel blocked her path.

"What happens tomorrow?"

Rebecca smiled.

"Apparently, room 1708."

Mara slept in the guest room.

Or tried to.

At 3:12 a.m., she heard Daniel moving downstairs.

At 3:20, his car left.

Mara didn't follow him.

She called Rebecca.

"He's leaving."

"I expected that."

"You expected it?"

"I put a tracker on the document envelope."

Mara sat upright.

"You what?"

"Your father hired me for a reason."

Despite everything, Mara smiled.

"Where's Daniel going?"

Rebecca checked.

"Downtown."

"The Langford?"

"No."

A pause.

"Ellison Heritage headquarters."

Mara dressed.

Twenty minutes later, she and Rebecca watched from a parking structure across the street.

Daniel entered the building using his executive access card.

Five minutes later, Claire arrived.

Then a third person.

Mara recognized him.

"That's Victor Hale."

Rebecca frowned.

Victor was Ellison Heritage's chief financial officer.

Mara's father had hired him fifteen years earlier.

"Why is Victor meeting Daniel at three-thirty in the morning?"

Rebecca didn't answer.

At 4:06, Claire left.

At 4:18, Victor followed.

Daniel remained.

Mara wanted to go inside.

Rebecca stopped her.

"Not yet."

"He's inside my company."

"Exactly. Let him make mistakes."

At seven, Mara returned home before Daniel.

He arrived at 7:40.

"You were gone."

"So were you."

He stared.

"Where?"

"Driving."

Daniel looked exhausted.

"Mara, please. Let me explain Claire."

"Okay."

He seemed surprised.

"Okay?"

"Explain."

Daniel sat opposite her.

"Claire's going through a divorce."

Mara said nothing.

"She's been struggling. Last night we were working. She started crying. I comforted her. We drank. We fell asleep."

"Why wasn't your wedding ring on?"

Daniel glanced at his hand.

"I took it off because my finger was swollen."

"Why were her earrings beside it?"

"I don't know."

"Why did you have a hotel reservation?"

"Client meeting."

"Which client?"

Daniel hesitated.

Mara smiled.

"That's what I thought."

She stood.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

"I love you."

Mara looked at him.

Perhaps he did.

That was the disturbing part.

People imagined betrayal required hatred.

Sometimes it required entitlement.

Daniel might genuinely love her while simultaneously believing he deserved her money, her trust, and another woman's affection.

Mara pulled away.

"I have work."

At eleven, she met Rebecca at the Langford.

Room 1708 was on the seventeenth floor.

Rebecca had arranged for them to wait in a private suite across the hallway.

At 11:53, Claire arrived.

Alone.

At noon, Victor Hale arrived.

Mara's stomach dropped.

Daniel wasn't there.

Victor entered Claire's room.

Rebecca whispered, "Interesting."

Twenty minutes later, another man arrived carrying a silver briefcase.

Mara didn't recognize him.

Rebecca did.

"That's Nathan Cross."

"Who?"

"A private banker."

Mara stared.

"Why would Claire be meeting a private banker?"

Rebecca's expression became grim.

"She wouldn't."

At 12:37, Daniel arrived.

He entered room 1708.

Mara's heart pounded.

Rebecca touched her arm.

"Wait."

"What are they doing?"

"We're about to find out."

At 1:05, Nathan left.

At 1:20, Victor left.

Daniel and Claire remained.

Mara couldn't take it anymore.

She crossed the hallway.

Rebecca followed.

Mara knocked.

Nothing.

Again.

Then Claire opened the door.

Her face went white.

"Mara."

Mara walked past her.

Daniel stood beside a table covered in paperwork.

No bed scene.

No champagne.

No romantic lunch.

Something worse.

Corporate documents.

Bank transfers.

Copies of Mara's passport.

Her signature.

Her father's trust.

Daniel stepped in front of them.

"Mara, you shouldn't be here."

She stared at him.

"Apparently."

Claire started crying.

Daniel snapped, "Not now."

Mara looked at the papers.

One document was titled:

CONSENT TO TRANSFER.

Another:

MEDICAL INCAPACITY CERTIFICATION.

Mara picked it up.

Her hands went cold.

The document claimed Mara suffered from a cognitive condition that made her incapable of managing Ellison Heritage Holdings.

Two doctors had supposedly signed it.

Mara had never met either doctor.

She looked at Daniel.

"You were going to declare me incompetent?"

Daniel said nothing.

Claire whispered, "It wasn't supposed to go this far."

Mara turned.

"What wasn't?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"Claire."

But Claire had begun unraveling.

"He promised nobody would get hurt."

"Stop talking."

"He said you'd agree eventually."

"Claire!"

Mara stepped between them.

"What did he promise you?"

Claire started crying harder.

"That after the transfer..."

Daniel grabbed the papers.

Rebecca moved forward.

"Don't touch those."

Daniel stopped.

Claire whispered, "He said after he controlled the company, we'd leave."

Mara felt strangely calm.

"So you were having an affair."

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel said, "Mara—"

"How long?"

Claire whispered, "Eight months."

Eight months.

Mara nodded.

Daniel looked almost relieved.

As if the affair were the worst secret.

It wasn't.

Mara lifted the incapacity certificate.

"You tried to steal my company."

Daniel's face changed.

"No."

"Then explain this."

"Victor arranged it."

Mara looked toward Claire.

Claire shook her head.

"Daniel knew."

Daniel's expression became dangerous.

"Claire."

She stepped backward.

Mara had never seen that look on her husband's face.

Neither had Claire.

Claire reached into her purse.

"I kept copies."

Daniel moved toward her.

Rebecca blocked him.

"Copies of what?"

Claire looked at Mara.

"Everything."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

Claire pulled out a flash drive.

"I knew Daniel would blame me if something happened."

Mara extended her hand.

Claire hesitated.

Then placed the drive in her palm.

Daniel stared at it.

"Give me that."

"No."

"Mara."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

Rebecca reached for her phone.

"I'd think carefully."

Daniel stopped.

Mara put the drive inside her handbag.

Claire whispered, "There's one thing you need to understand."

Mara looked at her.

Claire's face had changed.

Fear replaced guilt.

"Daniel didn't start this."

Mara frowned.

"What?"

Claire looked toward the door.

"Someone else approached him."

"Who?"

Before Claire could answer, someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Daniel's face drained of color.

Claire whispered, "That's him."

May you like

The door handle moved.

And the man who had taught Daniel how to steal Mara's life was standing on the other side.
