Chapter 4 - The Storage Unit

Mara did not go alone.

She also did not tell Daniel.

Police reached the parking garage first.

Claire was gone.

Her car remained.

There was no blood.

No obvious struggle.

Daniel's watch was real.

Mara recognized the scratch near the clasp.

But Daniel was at home when officers checked.

He claimed the watch had disappeared days earlier.

Mara didn't believe him.

She didn't completely disbelieve him either.

That uncertainty was new.

The deeper she went, the less simple anything became.

Rebecca persuaded Mara not to visit the storage unit until morning.

At 9:00 a.m., they arrived with Detective Samuel Grant.

The unit had been rented under a shell company.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Robert Ellison's name appeared on several.

Mara opened the first.

Her father's notebooks.

The second contained old corporate ledgers.

The third contained photographs.

Victor.

Daniel.

Robert.

One photograph had been taken outside a restaurant six years earlier.

Daniel and Victor were shaking hands.

That was before Daniel claimed to have met Victor.

Mara turned the photograph over.

Her father's handwriting:

D + V meeting again. Why lie?

Mara closed her eyes.

Her father had known.

Detective Grant found a laptop.

Rebecca found tax records.

Mara opened another box.

Inside was her father's old phone.

She remembered it.

He had carried it everywhere.

The police took it for analysis.

By evening, Claire appeared.

She walked into a police station forty miles away.

Shaken.

Bruised.

Alive.

Mara rushed there.

Claire cried when she saw her.

"I'm sorry."

"Who took you?"

"I don't know."

"You saw him."

"He wore a hood."

"What happened?"

"He forced me into a car. Drove me around. Then left me near a gas station."

"Why?"

Claire swallowed.

"He wanted the flash drive."

Mara's heart tightened.

"Did you tell him I have it?"

"No."

"Did he say anything else?"

Claire nodded.

"He said Daniel had failed."

Mara sat back.

"Failed what?"

"He wouldn't say."

Daniel arrived thirty minutes later.

Claire visibly recoiled.

Daniel stopped.

"Claire?"

"Stay away from me."

Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

"I didn't do this."

"You lied to me."

"So did you."

Mara stepped between them.

"Enough."

Daniel looked at his wife.

Something had changed in him.

The arrogance was gone.

He looked frightened.

"Mara, we need to talk privately."

"No."

"Please."

She studied him.

"Talk."

Daniel glanced at Claire and Rebecca.

"Victor has something on me."

Mara waited.

"Five years ago, my company was failing. I owed almost two million dollars. Victor offered to help."

"In exchange for what?"

"Information about your father."

Mara felt nauseated.

"What information?"

"Meetings. Accounts. Business decisions."

"You spied on my father."

Daniel lowered his head.

"Yes."

Mara wanted to hit him.

Instead she asked, "And after Dad died?"

"Victor kept the debt alive. Interest. Favors. He owned me."

"Did he force you to sleep with Claire?"

Daniel flinched.

"No."

Claire looked away.

"Did he force you to forge my signature?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"Did he?"

"No."

Mara nodded.

"Then don't confuse blackmail with innocence."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I know."

For the first time, Mara believed those two words.

Not because they absolved him.

Because they didn't.

Daniel continued.

"Victor wanted control of Ellison. The incapacity documents were supposed to give me temporary voting authority."

"And then?"

"I transfer control to Victor."

"In exchange?"

"My debt disappears."

"And Claire?"

Daniel looked at her.

Claire answered.

"He promised we'd leave together."

Mara almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Daniel said, "I lied."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Obviously."

"I wasn't leaving Mara."

Claire stared at him.

"What?"

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I never planned to."

The cruelty of it silenced everyone.

Claire had betrayed Mara for a future Daniel never intended to give her.

Mara had been betrayed by a husband who apparently wanted to keep both women.

Daniel looked at Mara.

"I know that doesn't make anything better."

"No."

"I was selfish."

"Yes."

"I was scared."

"Yes."

"I thought I could fix it before you found out."

Mara looked at him for a long time.

"You underestimated me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

That admission mattered more than his apologies.

But it wasn't forgiveness.

Detective Grant entered.

"We recovered data from Robert Ellison's phone."

Mara stood.

"There are several recordings."

"Of Victor?"

"Yes."

Grant hesitated.

"And one from the night before your father died."

Mara froze.

Her father had died from a heart attack.

At home.

Alone.

Or so she had believed.

Grant played the recording.

Robert's voice:

"Get out of my house, Victor."

Then Victor:

"You can't shut me out."

Robert:

"Mara gets everything."

Victor:

"She's not ready."

Robert:

"That's not your decision."

A third voice entered.

Daniel.

Mara stopped breathing.

"Robert, please. Let's calm down."

Mara turned toward her husband.

Daniel looked destroyed.

"You were there."

He nodded.

"The night Dad died."

"Yes."

"You told me you were in Chicago."

"I lied."

Mara could barely hear herself.

"What happened?"

Daniel began crying.

"Victor came to confront him. I followed because I thought I could stop it."

"Did you?"

"No."

"What happened to my father?"

"Victor threatened him. Your father got angry. Then he collapsed."

"And?"

Daniel covered his face.

"I wanted to call 911."

Mara's blood turned cold.

"Wanted?"

"Victor stopped me."

Claire whispered, "Oh my God."

Mara stepped closer.

"How long?"

Daniel couldn't look at her.

"Daniel. How long did you wait?"

His answer was barely audible.

"Eleven minutes."

Mara slapped him.

The sound filled the room.

Nobody moved.

Daniel accepted it.

Mara shook.

"Eleven minutes?"

"I checked his pulse. He was breathing."

"You left my father on the floor?"

"I was terrified."

"You let me bury him believing he died alone."

Daniel cried openly.

"I know."

Mara walked away before she did something worse.

Detective Grant stopped Daniel from following.

That evening, Mara sat alone in Rebecca's office listening to the rest of the recovered recording.

Victor had threatened Robert.

Daniel had begged Victor to call an ambulance.

Eventually Daniel himself had called.

But eleven minutes had passed.

Whether earlier treatment could have saved Robert was impossible to know.

What mattered was that Daniel had chosen fear over decency.

Mara removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the desk.

Rebecca sat beside her.

"You don't have to decide anything tonight."

"I already did."

"About Daniel?"

"About me."

Mara looked toward the city.

"I'm taking my company back."

The next morning, she called an emergency board meeting.

Victor arrived smiling.

Daniel arrived with his attorney.

Mara sat at the head of the table.

Rebecca distributed evidence.

Mara terminated Victor.

Security escorted him out.

Then she suspended every contract connected to Daniel's company.

Daniel didn't protest.

Victor did.

"You think you've won?"

Mara looked at him.

"No. I think the auditors are about to start."

Victor smiled strangely.

"Ask Rebecca why your father really changed his will."

Mara's eyes moved toward Rebecca.

Rebecca went pale.

Victor laughed.

"There it is."

Security pulled him toward the door.

Mara stood.

"What does he mean?"

Rebecca didn't answer.

"Rebecca."

Victor shouted from the hallway:

"Tell her who the company was supposed to go to!"

The doors closed.

Mara turned toward the woman her father had trusted most.

Rebecca slowly sat down.

"Mara..."

"What did my father change?"

Rebecca opened her briefcase.

She removed a sealed envelope Mara had never seen.

Across the front, in Robert Ellison's handwriting, were six words:

FOR MARA—ONLY IF DANIEL BETRAYS HER.

Rebecca broke the seal.

Inside was a birth certificate.

May you like

Mara looked at the name.

Then she stopped breathing.
