Chapter 9 - The Account in Madison’s Name

Vincent's father had planned their marriage years before either of them knew.

The revelation reopened everything.

Madison confronted Vincent.

He knew nothing about the account.

Together, reluctantly, they investigated.

The money came from a settlement between the Carter and Bennett families.

Vincent's father had discovered Charles's fraud years earlier.

Instead of exposing him, he'd forced Charles to place stolen funds into restitution accounts.

Madison's was one.

Charles had believed Vincent stole his empire.

In reality, Vincent's father had returned part of it to the people Charles cheated.

The mythology behind Charles's revenge collapsed.

He hadn't been a victim.

He'd been caught.

Vanessa learned the truth too.

She cried when Madison told her.

“My whole life was built on his lie.”

“So was mine.”

“What happens now?”

Madison looked at her half sister.

“We decide what comes next.”

Vanessa entered witness protection temporarily after agreeing to testify.

Vincent sold several businesses tied to criminal activity.

The decision shocked Chicago.

“You're dismantling your own empire?” Madison asked.

“The part I don't want Ethan inheriting.”

“You expect him to inherit anything?”

“I expect him to have a choice.”

That answer stayed with her.

Vincent was changing.

But Madison refused to confuse change with entitlement.

He never asked her to stop the divorce.

Instead, he signed every document Rachel sent.

Then Charles requested to see Madison.

She refused.

He sent a letter.

She returned it unopened.

He sent another.

She burned it.

The third wasn't addressed to her.

It was addressed to Ethan.

Madison nearly destroyed it.

Then she felt something inside.

A photograph.

She opened the envelope.

The picture showed Vincent's father, Charles, and Eleanor.

Madison's mother.

All three stood outside the Bennett headquarters twenty-nine years earlier.

On the back:

Ask Eleanor who started the war.

Madison drove to her mother's house.

Eleanor saw the photograph and sat down.

“Where did you get this?”

“Dad.”

Her mother's hands trembled.

“Tell me.”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Your father wasn't always the man you met in that archive.”

“What happened?”

“He discovered something about the Carters.”

“What?”

Eleanor took Madison's hand.

“Vincent's father wasn't the man who destroyed Charles.”

Madison waited.

“Then who was?”

Her mother whispered a name.

Madison's blood went cold.

Because the person Eleanor named was still alive.

And Madison had trusted him with Ethan.
