Fifteen Days Too Late / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Recording Vincent Never Expected

The headlights belonged to federal agents.

Madison didn't run.

Neither did Vincent.

Vanessa was taken to the hospital.

The ledger was seized.

Madison spent six hours answering questions beside Rachel.

Vincent said almost nothing.

But the recordings saved Madison.

Every conversation.

Every question she'd asked about suspicious transfers.

Every lie Vincent had told.

They established something important.

Madison had been investigating the financial irregularities before anyone accused her.

At dawn, the federal investigator closed his folder.

“You can go.”

Madison stood.

Vincent remained seated.

“Mr. Carter stays.”

She looked at him.

For years, Vincent had seemed untouchable.

Now he simply looked tired.

“Go to Ethan,” he said.

Madison did.

Three days later, Vincent was released without charges related to Charles's scheme, though several Carter businesses remained under investigation.

He came to Madison's apartment.

This time he brought no roses.

No gifts.

“I came to apologize.”

Madison waited.

“I abandoned you.”

“Yes.”

“I lied.”

“Yes.”

“I put another woman's crisis ahead of my wife and son.”

“Yes.”

Vincent swallowed.

“I don't have an excuse.”

That was the first apology Madison believed.

But belief wasn't forgiveness.

“I filed for divorce this morning.”

His face tightened.

He nodded.

“I expected that.”

“You won't fight custody.”

“No.”

“You won't hide assets.”

“No.”

“You'll cooperate with Rachel.”

“Yes.”

Madison studied him.

“Why?”

“Because if I make you stay, I'm proving I learned nothing.”

He turned to leave.

Then Madison spoke.

“Vincent.”

He stopped.

“Why did you sign those guardianship papers?”

“I didn't.”

“The signature—”

“Was copied from another document.”

He looked back.

“The only thing I signed that week was an insurance trust for you and Ethan.”

Madison frowned.

“What insurance trust?”

Vincent stared at her.

Then his expression changed.

“Daniel never showed you?”

“No.”

Vincent pulled out his phone.

He sent her a document.

Madison opened it.

Beneficiary:

Madison Carter.

Secondary beneficiary:

Ethan Carter.

Value:

$180 million.

Madison stared.

“When did you create this?”

“The day you told me you were pregnant.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I thought protecting you meant handling everything without frightening you.”

Vincent gave a bitter smile.

“I was wrong about a lot of things.”

He left.

That evening, Madison examined the trust.

One attachment was corrupted.

Rachel recovered it.

It wasn't financial.

It was an audio recording.

Vincent's voice.

Recorded eight months earlier.

“If anything happens to me, Madison gets out. No retaliation. No business obligations. Nothing touches her or the baby.”

Another man's voice asked, “And Vanessa?”

Vincent answered immediately.

“Vanessa is the past.”

Then came the sentence Madison never expected.

“My wife is the only woman I've loved enough to be afraid of losing.”

The recording continued.

Someone else entered the room.

May you like

Charles Bennett's voice said:

“Then we'll use her.”
