Chapter 10 - The Night Vincent Chose Wrong

The name was Michael Russo.

Vincent's security chief.

The man who had protected Madison's apartment.

The man who had been present when Ethan disappeared.

Michael had worked for Vincent for twelve years.

Madison called Vincent.

“Get away from Michael.”

“Why?”

“Now.”

A gunshot sounded through the phone.

The call disconnected.

Madison called police.

Then she called Rachel.

By the time she reached Vincent's office, ambulances were outside.

Vincent was alive.

Michael had fled.

A guard had been wounded.

Vincent sat on the steps, blood on his shirt that wasn't his.

Madison ran toward him before she could stop herself.

He looked up.

For one second, they were simply husband and wife again.

“You're okay?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Michael knew we'd found him.”

The evidence reconstructed a betrayal spanning decades.

Michael's father had been Charles's partner.

Together, they stole from both Bennett and Carter businesses.

When Vincent's father discovered them, Michael blamed the Carters.

Charles blamed everyone except himself.

Their alliance survived underground.

Daniel Cross eventually joined them.

Vanessa became bait.

Madison became the financial scapegoat.

Vincent became the target.

Ethan became leverage.

But Michael had made one mistake.

He kept records.

Vincent knew where.

A lakeside property outside Chicago.

They gave the information to federal investigators.

Madison expected Vincent to go himself.

He didn't.

“Why aren't you going?”

“Because that's what the police are for.”

She studied him.

Six months earlier, Vincent would have handled betrayal with violence.

Now he was standing beside his son's stroller.

“People change,” he said quietly.

“Sometimes.”

“Not fast enough.”

“No.”

He accepted that too.

Michael was arrested the following morning.

His records completed the case against Charles.

The criminal conspiracy that had shaped Madison's marriage was finally collapsing.

But one question remained.

Why had Vincent abandoned her in labor?

No conspiracy had forced that.

No forged document explained it.

One evening, Madison asked him.

“Tell me what happened that night. All of it.”

Vincent didn't defend himself.

Vanessa had called.

She said she was being followed.

Vincent believed her.

He went to O’Hare.

He took her to the condo.

She cried.

She talked about their past.

When Eleanor called, Vanessa actually told him to leave.

He stayed.

“Why?”

Vincent stared at the floor.

“Because going back meant admitting I'd abandoned you for her.”

Madison frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“I was ashamed. And instead of facing what I'd done, I delayed facing it.”

There it was.

Not romance.

Cowardice.

Madison found that somehow more believable.

“Did you want Vanessa back?”

“For about ten minutes, I wanted to remember who I was before my life became complicated.”

“And?”

“I realized I didn't miss her.”

He swallowed.

“I missed being twenty-two.”

Madison looked away.

“You almost lost me while remembering being young.”

“I know.”

Vincent's eyes filled, though no tears fell.

“I'll know that for the rest of my life.”

Madison's phone rang.

Rachel.

She answered.

“Madison, Charles agreed to testify.”

“Against Michael?”

“Against everyone.”

Rachel paused.

“But he demanded one condition.”

“What?”

“He wants you in the courtroom when he reveals who ordered the attempt on your life.”

Madison looked at Vincent.

“Wasn't it Charles?”

May you like

Rachel's silence answered first.

“No.”
