Chapter 7 - Vanessa’s First Lie

Vanessa survived surgery.
Madison visited her alone.
Vanessa looked fragile beneath hospital sheets.
“You came.”
“I want the truth.”
Vanessa nodded.
She confessed everything.
Charles had raised her under another name after an affair with her mother.
Vanessa discovered Madison existed when she was seventeen.
Charles poisoned her against the legitimate Bennett family.
Years later, he pushed Vanessa toward Vincent.
Their college romance had been real.
But Charles encouraged every step.
When Vanessa left America, that too had been Charles's order.
“Why return?”
“He said Vincent was vulnerable.”
“Because I was pregnant?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Madison's hands tightened.
“And you called him while I was in labor.”
“I didn't know.”
“Would it matter?”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Madison wanted to hate her.
Part of her did.
But another part saw a second daughter Charles had manipulated.
“Did you sleep with Vincent?”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“No.”
Madison believed her.
It didn't erase Vincent's betrayal.
He hadn't needed sex to betray his wife.
He had simply needed to choose Vanessa when Madison needed him most.
Vanessa continued.
“The night he picked me up, I tried to remind him of us.”
“What happened?”
“He told me he had a wife.”
Madison's throat tightened.
“Then why did he stay?”
“Because I told him someone was trying to kill me.”
That explained.
It did not excuse.
Vanessa handed Madison another key.
“Charles has a private archive.”
“Where?”
“Under the old Bennett headquarters.”
Inside that archive, Madison and Rachel found decades of evidence.
Fraud.
Blackmail.
Forged signatures.
Charles had built his revenge patiently.
Then Madison found a folder marked M.C.
Inside were photographs of her.
School.
College.
Her wedding.
Her pregnancy.
Her hospital.
Someone had watched her for years.
At the bottom was a handwritten plan.
PHASE FOUR: MATERNAL DEATH.
Madison felt sick.
Rachel turned the page.
A hospital employee had been paid.
The hemorrhage might not have been natural.
Madison called Vincent.
He answered on the first ring.
“My father tried to kill me.”
Silence.
Then Vincent said, “Where are you?”
“The Bennett archive.”
“Leave now.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles just called me.”
Madison looked toward the stairwell.
“What did he say?”
Vincent's voice became urgent.
“He said you finally found the room he built for you.”
The archive lights went out.
A lock clicked behind Madison.

Then her father's voice came through the darkness.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
