Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside Calder House

Elena recoiled.

"What?"

Rafe moved between his sister and Voss.

"Enough."

Voss smiled.

"Protecting her again."

"She didn't kill Daniel."

"No. But she told us where he was."

Elena's face emptied.

"No."

Mara looked at her.

"Elena."

"I didn't."

Voss tilted his head.

"You answered a phone call."

Elena stopped breathing.

Rafe turned.

"What phone call?"

Tears appeared in Elena's eyes.

"Seven years ago."

Mara felt everything inside her tighten.

Elena whispered, "Dad called me."

Voss continued.

"He asked where Daniel was."

"I didn't know what Dad was doing."

"What did you tell him?" Mara asked.

Elena's voice broke.

"That Daniel said he was leaving from a warehouse outside Gaziantep."

Rafe closed his eyes.

Mara stared at Elena.

"You gave him the location."

"I didn't know."

"You gave him the location."

"I thought Dad was trying to help."

Mara stepped back.

Years of grief crashed into one moment.

The funeral.

Her mother's hands shaking over the folded flag.

Daniel's empty chair every Christmas.

All because of a phone call.

Elena covered her mouth.

"I'm sorry."

Mara could not speak.

Voss looked pleased.

That snapped something in Rafe.

He crossed the room.

Julian reached inside his jacket.

Rafe stopped.

Everyone saw the movement.

Mara's eyes locked on Julian.

"No."

Julian drew a pistol.

Nico and the guards lifted theirs.

Suddenly the dining room was frozen beneath half a dozen weapons.

Elena gasped.

Vivian backed away.

Voss did not move.

Rafe stood directly in front of Julian.

"Put it down."

Julian's hand trembled.

"Don't."

"You've known me twenty years."

"That's why I'm telling you not to move."

Rafe stared at the gun.

Then at Julian.

"You were at my father's funeral."

"I organized it."

"You stood beside Elena."

"I protected her."

"You stole from me."

"I saved what your father built."

Rafe's face hardened.

"That's what this is about?"

Julian's voice rose.

"You were going to burn everything down."

"Everything criminal."

"Everything profitable."

"People died."

"People always die."

The words hung in the room.

Mara saw Rafe's expression change.

Not anger.

Disgust.

Julian continued.

"Your father understood power. You inherited his empire and spent years apologizing for it."

"I spent years cleaning his blood off it."

"You became weak."

"No."

Rafe looked at Mara.

Then at Elena.

"I became tired."

Voss sighed.

"This sentimentality is boring."

He nodded toward Julian.

"Finish it."

Julian's gun shifted toward Rafe's chest.

Mara saw the movement.

So did Nico.

Everything happened at once.

Elena screamed.

Nico fired.

Julian fired.

Rafe twisted.

The shot hit the wall.

Nico's bullet struck Julian's shoulder.

He fell.

Voss lunged for the side door.

Mara moved after him.

Rafe grabbed her.

"No."

"He killed my brother."

"We need him alive."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel's evidence is still missing."

Voss disappeared.

Security pursued him.

Vivian remained frozen against the wall.

Mara turned to her.

"You put the metal in Rafe."

Vivian's face crumpled.

"I had no choice."

Rafe's voice became cold.

"Everyone has a choice."

"They threatened my son."

Silence.

Vivian looked at him.

"Three years ago they took photographs of him leaving school. They sent me his schedule. They knew everything."

"And your solution was to kill me?"

"I wasn't supposed to kill you."

"What was supposed to happen?"

"The implant was meant to make you sick."

"Why?"

"So you'd step down."

Rafe laughed bitterly.

"Poison me into retirement?"

"Julian said Elena would take over."

Elena stared.

"I don't want his company."

"They didn't need you to run it. Just sign."

Mara looked at Vivian.

"What was on the fragment?"

"A slow-release inflammatory compound."

Ethan's test.

It made sense.

"Could it have killed him?"

Vivian began crying.

"I told Julian the risks."

"Could it?"

"Yes."

Rafe looked away.

Mara did not.

"And you did it anyway."

Vivian whispered, "Yes."

Police sirens approached.

Rafe turned toward Nico.

"You called them?"

"Federal task force."

Rafe frowned.

"Who?"

Nico looked at Mara.

"Someone contacted us ten minutes ago."

"Who?"

Nico held up his phone.

A message displayed one name.

OWEN BRIGGS.

Mara stared.

"The driver."

Nico nodded.

"He's been working undercover with a federal anti-trafficking unit for four years."

Rafe looked toward the door.

"Where is he?"

"Outside."

Minutes later, Briggs entered.

Mara remembered his younger face from Daniel's file.

He looked older now.

More tired.

He stopped when he saw her.

"Mara Bennett."

"Did you know Daniel?"

Briggs nodded.

"I was supposed to extract him."

Her throat tightened.

"What happened?"

"Voss changed the route."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"I did."

"Who?"

"Federal investigators."

"And?"

"They buried it."

Rafe said, "My father."

Briggs looked at him.

"Your father had help."

"Who?"

"Senator Malcolm Reeves."

Rafe swore quietly.

Mara recognized the name.

Reeves was nationally respected.

Former chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

A man who had built a career praising veterans on television.

Briggs continued.

"Northpoint was laundering money through reconstruction contracts. Voss ran logistics. Calder Senior financed it. Reeves protected it."

"And Daniel found proof," Mara said.

"Yes."

"Where?"

Briggs shook his head.

"We never found the drive."

Elena suddenly looked up.

"The key."

Everyone turned.

"What?" Mara asked.

Elena wiped her eyes.

"The key Daniel mailed me."

"Where is it?"

"In a safety deposit box."

Rafe stared.

"What bank?"

"Not a bank."

Elena looked at Mara.

"Daniel told me never to put it somewhere our father could reach."

"Then where?"

"A veterans' cemetery."

Mara frowned.

Elena continued.

"He said if anything happened, I should take the key to a locker hidden inside the old caretaker building at Arlington Memorial Park."

Briggs stepped forward.

"That's where Daniel's stateside handler was buried."

Mara's pulse raced.

"Who?"

"Agent Samuel Hart."

Rafe looked at Nico.

"Get the cars."

Mara stopped him.

"You're not going."

"Yes, I am."

"You were shot at, poisoned, and operated on yesterday."

"And?"

"And I swear to God, Calder—"

He gave her a tired smile.

"There's the nurse."

An hour later, they arrived at the cemetery.

Elena led them to an old stone service building.

Inside, behind a maintenance cabinet, they found a row of rusted lockers.

Number 214.

Elena removed a small brass key from a chain around her neck.

"I've carried this for seven years."

Mara stared at it.

"You never tried it?"

"I didn't know where the locker was until Briggs mentioned Hart."

She inserted the key.

It turned.

The metal door opened.

Inside sat one object.

A black flash drive.

Mara's hands trembled.

Rafe let her take it.

Back in the car, Nico plugged it into an isolated laptop.

Encrypted files appeared.

Hundreds.

Transactions.

Video.

Emails.

Names.

Then Mara saw one folder.

MARA.

She stared.

"Why is my name there?"

Rafe looked equally confused.

She opened it.

Inside was a video file.

Timestamped two days before Daniel's death.

Mara pressed play.

Daniel appeared on screen.

Alive.

Looking directly into the camera.

"Mara, if you're watching this, then I didn't make it home."

Her hand flew to her mouth.

Daniel continued.

"Don't trust the official report. Don't trust anyone who says Calder ordered it."

Rafe froze.

Then Daniel said:

"Rafe Calder is the only reason I'm still alive long enough to record this."

Mara looked at Rafe.

He looked away.

The video continued.

"The person who betrayed me is someone we both know."

Daniel paused.

Behind him, a door moved.

He turned.

Fear crossed his face.

Then he whispered a name.

Mara leaned closer.

The sound cut out.

May you like

The screen went black.

And suddenly, every light in the car died.
