Chapter 4 - A Name From Her Past

Rafe discharged himself against medical advice nine hours after surgery.
Mara threatened to tie him to the bed.
He told her she couldn't.
She asked Nico for rope.
Rafe stayed another two hours.
Then they compromised.
He would leave only if Mara came with him.
She agreed for exactly one reason.
Elena Calder.
If Rafe's sister was walking into a meeting with Julian, Vivian, and Graham Voss, somebody needed to understand what that meant.
Calder House stood behind iron gates on twenty acres outside the city.
Mara expected something ostentatious.
Instead, the house was old stone, dark wood, and restrained wealth.
Rafe noticed her looking around.
"Disappointed?"
"I expected gold lions."
"We removed them last week."
She looked at him.
He smiled.
"That was a joke."
"Work on those."
Nico met them in the foyer.
"Elena isn't answering."
"Car?"
"Still in Boston, according to tracking."
"Phone?"
"Off."
Rafe's face tightened.
Mara watched him transform.
At the hospital he had been vulnerable.
Here, he became Calder again.
Orders.
Security.
Locked gates.
People moving instantly.
But beneath the control, Mara saw fear.
"How old is she?" Mara asked.
"Thirty-four."
"What does she do?"
"Pediatric attorney."
"You two close?"
"She's the only reason I still answer family calls."
"Does she know what the family business was?"
"Enough."
"Does she know you're trying to leave it?"
"She's why I started."
That surprised Mara.
Rafe walked into his office.
A large portrait of his father hung above the fireplace.
Rafe looked at it.
Then at Nico.
"Take that down."
Nico blinked.
"Now?"
"Now."
Two guards removed it.
Behind the portrait was a safe.
Mara raised an eyebrow.
"Subtle."
"My father enjoyed clichés."
Rafe opened the safe.
Inside were files.
He pulled one labeled NORTHPOINT.
Mara's pulse increased.
"You kept records?"
"Everything I could find after Daniel died."
He placed the folder on a desk.
Photographs.
Shipping manifests.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Mara saw Voss immediately.
Then Julian.
Then a younger Vivian.
Finally, Daniel.
Her brother stood beside a military vehicle, smiling.
Mara sat.
She had not seen that photograph before.
"Where did you get this?"
"His contact sent it."
"Who?"
Rafe hesitated.
"Daniel never told me."
She touched the photograph.
Her brother looked alive.
Young.
Certain.
Brave.
"He thought he could stop them," Rafe said.
"He always thought he could fix things."
"So did I."
Mara looked up.
"What did you do with his evidence?"
"I tried to dismantle Northpoint quietly."
"Why quietly?"
"My father was alive."
"And?"
Rafe met her eyes.
"He was one of them."
Mara stopped.
Rafe continued.
"My father wasn't simply connected to Voss. He financed the network."
"Did Daniel know?"
"Not at first."
"Did your father order Daniel killed?"
"I never found proof."
"But you think so."
"Yes."
Mara closed the folder.
"Then why keep the Calder name?"
"Because men like my father built walls around that name. I figured the easiest way to tear them down was from inside."
"You could have gone to the FBI."
"I did."
She stared.
"What?"
"Twice."
"What happened?"
"Evidence disappeared."
"Agents?"
"One retired unexpectedly. The other died in a boating accident."
Mara felt cold.
"Voss?"
"Probably."
"So this network reaches government."
"Some government. Some private. Enough."
A chime sounded.
Nico checked his phone.
"Gate camera."
Rafe moved toward the monitor.
A black sedan had stopped outside.
Passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Blonde.
Elegant.
Mid-thirties.
Elena.
Rafe exhaled.
"Open the gate."
Mara stopped him.
"Wait."
"What?"
"Look at the driver."
Rafe enlarged the image.
The driver's face became visible.
Mara knew him.
Not personally.
From Daniel's files.
"That's Owen Briggs."
Rafe looked at her.
"Who?"
"Northpoint extraction team."
His expression hardened.
"The team that was supposed to save Daniel?"
"Yes."
Rafe reached for his phone.
Then the video feed froze.
All monitors went black.
Nico swore.
"Security breach."
The lights flickered.
Then shut off.
Emergency illumination glowed red through the hall.
Rafe moved toward the door.
Mara grabbed his arm.
"You're twelve hours post-op."
"My sister is outside."
"And you'll help her by tearing your stitches?"
He looked ready to argue.
Then a gunshot echoed somewhere below.
Everyone froze.
Rafe's face changed.
"Stay here."
"No."
"Mara."
"You want to argue with the nurse again?"
"This isn't the ballroom."
"No. Which is why you're even less useful if you collapse."
Nico handed Mara a radio.
"East corridor."
They moved.
No running.
Rafe couldn't.
But he moved with brutal purpose.
Downstairs they found one guard unconscious.
Alive.
No visible gunshot wound.
The sound had come from a shattered light fixture.
A distraction.
The front doors stood open.
Elena's sedan was empty.
"Elena!" Rafe shouted.
No answer.
Then a woman stepped from the dark dining room.
Elena.
Rafe crossed the distance and grabbed her shoulders.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
"Where's Briggs?"
"Who?"
"Your driver."
"I took a car service."
Mara and Rafe exchanged looks.
Elena frowned.
"What is happening?"
"Why are you here?"
"Julian called me."
Rafe's expression hardened.
"What did he say?"
"That you were dying."
Silence.
"He said you needed me here before you signed something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
Elena looked at Mara.
"Who are you?"
"Mara Bennett."
Recognition flashed.
"Daniel Bennett's sister?"
Mara went still.
"How do you know my brother's name?"
Elena looked at Rafe.
Then back at Mara.
"Because Daniel called me two days before he died."
Rafe stared.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
"What did he say?"
Elena hesitated.
"He told me Rafe was in danger."
"From whom?"
"Our father."
Rafe's face went blank.
Elena continued.
"He said he had proof Dad was planning to have Rafe killed and blame it on a rival group."
Rafe leaned against the table.
Mara saw pain cross his face.
"Why?"
"Because you were trying to shut down Northpoint."
Rafe whispered, "He knew."
Elena nodded.
"He knew everything."
Mara stepped closer.
"What happened to Daniel?"
Elena looked at her.
"I don't know. But he mailed me something."
Mara's breath caught.
"What?"
"A key."
"To what?"
"I never found out."
"Where is it?"
Elena swallowed.
"I hid it."
"Where?"
Before she could answer, a slow clap came from the doorway.
Julian Cross stood there.
Behind him was Vivian Hale.
And behind Vivian stood Graham Voss.
Alive.
Older.
Smiling.
Mara's hand curled into a fist.
Voss looked at her.
"Sergeant Bennett."
No one had called her that in years.
Rafe moved in front of her.
Voss smiled wider.
"You have your brother's eyes."
Mara's voice became ice.
"You knew Daniel."
"Oh, very well."
Rafe took a step.
"Get out of my house."
Voss laughed.
"Still giving orders?"
"This is my house."
"No."
Voss glanced toward Elena.
"Not after tonight."
Elena looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Julian placed a document on the dining table.
A transfer agreement.
Rafe scanned it.
His expression shifted.
"This is forged."
Julian smiled.
"Not according to the signatures."
Elena stared.
"My signature?"
"Yes."
"I never signed this."
Vivian stepped forward.
"Perhaps you don't remember."
Elena's face changed.
Mara saw it instantly.
"What did you give her?"
Vivian said nothing.
Mara moved.
Rafe caught her arm.
"Not yet."
Voss placed both hands on the table.
"Here's what's going to happen. Elena will confirm the transfer. Rafe will sign away control of Calder Holdings. Northpoint will receive its old infrastructure back. And everyone gets to go home."
Mara stared.
"And Daniel?"
Voss looked at her.
"Daniel should have gone home when he had the chance."
Her blood went cold.
"You killed him."
Voss smiled.
"No."
Mara stepped closer.
"Then who did?"
Voss turned toward Rafe.
May you like
And said the one answer none of them expected.
"Ask Elena."
