Chapter 8 - The Father Who Wasn’t Dead

Nora watched the twelve-second video twenty-three times.

Daniel Bennett was alive when it was recorded.

There was no debate.

No blurry photograph.

No distorted recording.

Her father.

Older, thinner, but unmistakable.

Lily sat beside Nora in Luca’s study.

She had never met Daniel.

She had grown up knowing him only through one framed family photograph their mother kept in a drawer.

Now Lily stared at the screen with tears in her eyes.

“He knew about me?”

Nora remembered the unfinished letter.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Mom was pregnant before he disappeared.”

Lily swallowed.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Probably because saying it hurt.”

Their mother, Margaret Bennett, had spent years refusing to speak about Daniel.

Nora suddenly understood that silence differently.

Maybe Margaret had never stopped loving him.

Maybe hatred had been easier than grief.

Federal agents took Richard Shaw into custody.

His files implicated judges, investment firms, charity directors, and former Vale associates.

Luca cooperated.

That shocked everyone.

By morning, journalists were gathered outside the mansion.

Nora went from invisible catering worker to the woman at the center of the city’s largest financial scandal overnight.

She hated every second of it.

But the video mattered more.

Metadata placed Daniel’s recording somewhere in northern Vermont.

Marco identified the background.

A railway station clock.

St. Albans.

Nora stood.

“I’m going.”

Luca looked at her.

“He told you not to.”

“My father has been hiding for thirteen years because people were trying to kill him. Shaw is arrested.”

“Shaw wasn’t alone.”

“Then I’ll be careful.”

“I’m coming.”

Nora almost objected.

Then she stopped.

Some battles were easier when you stopped pretending you had to fight them alone.

They drove north.

Elena remained with Lily.

Margaret was told only that Lily was safe and Nora had discovered evidence about Daniel.

Nora could not tell her mother he was alive over the phone.

At St. Albans they showed Daniel’s photograph at diners and gas stations.

Nothing.

Then an elderly piano tuner recognized him.

“David?”

Nora’s pulse jumped.

“He called himself David?”

“David Bell. Lives outside town. Repairs instruments.”

The address led to a small farmhouse.

A light burned inside.

Nora reached the porch.

Her hand hovered above the door.

She knocked.

Nothing.

Again.

Footsteps.

The door opened.

Daniel Bennett stood there.

For thirteen years Nora had imagined this moment.

She had imagined screaming.

Crying.

Hitting him.

Running into his arms.

Instead she whispered:

“Dad?”

Daniel’s face broke.

“Nor.”

That childhood name destroyed her.

Nora struck him once in the chest.

Then again.

“You left us.”

“I know.”

“You let us think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Mom waited for you.”

“I know.”

“You knew Lily existed.”

Tears ran down Daniel’s face.

“Yes.”

Nora hit his chest again.

Then collapsed against him.

Daniel held his daughter.

Neither spoke.

Luca turned away to give them privacy.

Hours later, Daniel told the story.

He had escaped Pier Nine with Elena’s help.

Shaw hunted him.

Daniel tried contacting Margaret twice.

Both attempts led men directly to safe houses.

After the second attempt, a man was killed protecting him.

Daniel stopped trying.

He built the coded evidence slowly.

Julian helped occasionally.

Elena became his secret link.

But when Elena staged her death, even that connection ended.

“Why didn’t you come home later?”

Daniel looked at Nora.

“Because Shaw started watching you again when you turned twenty-one.”

Nora remembered strange cars outside her apartment.

Anonymous calls.

She had thought debt collectors were harassing them.

Daniel had stayed away because danger followed him.

Luca asked the obvious question.

“Why record the video three weeks ago?”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Because someone found me.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are you still here?”

“I was leaving tonight.”

Nora frowned.

“Why tell me not to look for you?”

“Because the man looking for me isn’t Shaw.”

Nora felt cold.

Daniel walked to a cabinet.

He removed an envelope containing surveillance photographs.

One showed the Vale mansion.

Another showed Nora leaving work.

Another showed Lily’s college.

The last showed Luca.

Written on the back:

VICTOR’S SON FINISHES WHAT VICTOR STARTED.

Luca stared.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t think you sent these.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel looked toward the dark window.

“I think someone has been trying to make Nora believe the Vale family is still hunting us.”

A vehicle stopped outside.

Headlights swept across the room.

Daniel went pale.

“That’s him.”

The front door handle moved.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“He found me again.”
