Chapter 10 - The Empty Grave

Victor Vale’s grave was opened under federal supervision before sunrise.

Inside the coffin was no body.

There were sandbags.

Luca stared into the empty grave.

Celeste began crying.

Elena closed her eyes.

Another death staged.

Another family manipulated.

Inside the coffin lining they found a waterproof case.

Victor had hidden financial ledgers, recordings, and a handwritten confession.

He admitted laundering money.

He admitted framing Daniel.

He admitted helping Shaw.

But he also wrote that Thomas Crane had become dangerous even to his partners.

The final page contained one sentence:

IF I DIE, THOMAS DID IT.

Luca turned toward Celeste.

“You knew about the coffin?”

“My father gave me the key the week before he died. He said never use it unless someone from the Bennett family returned.”

Nora looked at her.

“And when I appeared?”

“I panicked.”

“So you humiliated me?”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“I saw your name badge. Bennett. Then you played Daniel’s version.”

“And instead of telling me the truth?”

“I was terrified Crane was watching.”

Nora shook her head.

“You still chose cruelty.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No justification.

Just yes.

Oddly, that was the first thing Celeste said that Nora respected.

The confession gave federal agents enough to issue warrants.

But Crane disappeared.

Again.

Daniel believed he would target the evidence.

Luca believed he would target the people.

Both were right.

That afternoon, Margaret received a package.

Inside was a piano key.

White ivory.

A message:

ONE FAMILY FOR ANOTHER.

Nora immediately called Lily.

No answer.

Her heart stopped.

Then Lily walked into the kitchen holding groceries.

Nora almost collapsed.

Everyone was safe.

So who was Crane threatening?

Elena noticed something about the piano key.

A small V had been carved underneath.

“It came from Victor’s private piano.”

The instrument was stored at the Vale country estate.

They drove there with federal agents.

The piano sat in an unused music room.

One key was missing.

Inside the empty space Nora found a folded strip of paper.

Coordinates.

Daniel recognized them.

“The lake house.”

Victor had owned a secluded property outside the city.

Agents surrounded it.

Inside they found evidence Crane had been staying there.

Maps.

Photographs.

Weapons.

And a wall covered in pictures of Nora, Luca, Elena, Daniel, Celeste, Margaret, and Lily.

At the center was a photograph from the gala.

Nora at the piano.

Under it:

SHE OPENED THE DOOR.

Nora stared.

“What door?”

Daniel looked at the image.

“The performance.”

“The piece?”

“Yes.”

He turned toward Luca.

“My altered measures weren’t only proof.”

Nora understood.

“They were a signal.”

“To whom?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the old piano in the lake house.

“To someone I thought was dead.”

Nora felt a chill.

“Who?”

Before Daniel could answer, music began playing upstairs.

The Fifth Winter.

The altered version.

Live.

Not a recording.

Someone was playing the piano on the second floor.

Nora walked toward the staircase.

Luca grabbed her arm.

She looked at him.

“Whoever is up there knows my father’s version.”

They climbed.

The music stopped.

A door stood half-open.

Nora pushed it.

The room was empty.

The piano bench slowly spun.

On the keys lay a card.

Nora picked it up.

Three words.

HELLO, LITTLE NOR.

Only one other person besides Daniel had ever used that name.

Nora looked at her father.

His face had gone white.

“That handwriting…”

Nora whispered:

“Whose is it?”

May you like

Daniel answered:

“My brother’s.”
